Atypical MaDD / OSMaDD / (ATP)MaDD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This umbrella term / subtype of maladaptive daydreaming is for people with maladaptive daydreaming disorder who SUBJECTIVELY believe that they have a presentation of the disorder that is uncommon / does not fit one or more of the criterion for MaDD spectrum, or have a symptom outside of the disorder that impacts their daydreaming. Because this experience is subjective, it is a self identified term meaning that it is up to the person determine this rather than to be a strict set of criteria.
(please scroll to see examples it you dont want to read explanation)
Here’s Eli Somer’s desc of “severity” of MaDD according to SCID-MD
Mild : mainly experiences distress no obvious functional impairment
Moderate: One area is affected (eg; work)
Severe: More than one area is affected (eg: work, school, social life)
I decided I didn’t like the mild - severe archetype (as an autistic individual with multiple diagnosis) because it is already problematic in the neurodivergent/mental illness / Mad-pride community that one case is more “valid” than other one or that one case is not deserving of attention because its “not visible on the outside” / “trauma olympics / mental illness olympics” I also think it males me uncomfortable because all divergencies can be flux or manifested differently depending on the environment and can be a completely covert experience
while the papers definitely weren’t meant to be perfect or even proofread, or intentionally isolating I decided to bring light to my own experiences and others anyways.
I also realized how lonely the maladaptive daydreaming community is as it mainly focuses on hyperphantasia , immersive plots, paracosms while ignoring individuals that don't have them , causing many people to feel “invalid” because a mass majority is experiencing things you do not, which can heavily stunt healing if you don’t believe/recognize your own maladaptive experiences
Very fortunately Somer already recognized this, well unfortunately only one instance / presentation as Underspecified maladaptive daydreaming. Again referencing the SCIDMD:
Unspecified MD = A form of Maladaptive daydreaming which does not meet the full criteria for Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder. This is the case when criterion A is 3. (less than 3 months in duration)
paper: https://b53fd6a7-020b-470d-a624-a4b339e62471.filesusr.com/ugd/2c1d93_76dd90e6010e4734be35c01c3a76f42b.pdf
(Note: These are NOT the ONLY examples /presentations these do NOT encompass everyone under the umbrella or describe every experience, One can identify as this and fit none of the examples or only some, or you can fit/ be described by AMaDD and choose NOT to, in other words its up to individual)
“what do you mean by infrequency / difference/ disruption?”
I used them to replace the mild-severe / high functioning - low framework. Its to recognize that symptoms can change over time, or differ circumstantially and also for people to feel more comfortable with their MaDD.
what about the name? OsMaDD = otherspecified maladaptive daydreaming , AMaDD = Atypical maladaptive daydreaming , UMaDD = Underspecified Maladaptive Daydreaming , (ATP)MaDD = Atypically Presented Maladaptive daydreaming.
“Whats with all the names?”
I added multiple names because; some may he uncomfortable with OSMaDD or feel that it is too medicalized, so I added AMaDD (as its the original name) , for a less medical approach, (due to MaDD not being in neither the dsm or icd yet) and also to steer away from some societal issues that sometimes come with not having a specific diagnosis in the psychiatric field.
An additional reason is to prevent literal thinking or fear of identifying with psychiatric terms, (stigma surrounding otherspecified and underspecified in medical fields in general) not wanting to receive those two terms in a non-medical settings.
It also is used for those who fluctuate between ID and MaDD,who dont want to use underspecified or other specified as terms. UMaDD would be considered a type of AMaDD.
“What is otherspecified / underspecified?”: It is used interchangeably sometimes but also has been used to be different frameworks (even some medical sites , doctors and psychiatrists are confused about it as I see opposing definitions all the time)
otherspecified (also known as not otherwise specified):meaning that a neurotype presentation is indicative of a certain genre or disorder but does not fit the criterion or is slightly different to warrant outside of its original set of category or more specific neurotypes
under specified: typically is a temporary diagnosis, but simply means that theres not enough info/time to make a specific diagnosis / can also mean you do not meet clearly to a specific disorder / do not meet the criteria / have a co-morbid disorder that makes the answer complicated/ meeting the criteria for multiple disorders. (usually diagnosed in emergency situations) example: underspecified depression: you have some sort of depression but youre not in a setting that can be warranted to identify for a specific type (seasonal, mdd, pdd etc, etc)
source: Mental Health of america and (psychologist) Kevin William Grant
mha: https://mhanational.org/conditions/not-otherwise-specified-other-specified-disorder-or-unspecified-disorder/
kevin grants resources, studies etc (contains full detailed analysis): https://www.kevinwgrant.com/blog/item/navigating-the-ambiguity-understanding-unspecified-mental-disorders
(note: im not a doctor just some random kid do not take this as a (direct/primary) source , its more of a secondary or tertiary source)
examples of AMaDD /example of reasons for identifying with AMaDD being:
having simplistic daydreams / non immersive or detailed plots
primarily non-fantastical daydreams / grounded in real life
Daydreaming includes distress that is not time-based , aka their daydreaming intrudes their life in a different way than the length of their daydreams, Like these below;
daydreams could be about something stigmatizing/ problematic causing the daydreamer to question their morality as an individual and/or causing shame
their daydreaming causes sudden influx in their emotions that disrupts their ability to function
Feeling like your BOTH an immersive daydreamer and a maladaptive one
Feeling like your NEITHER ^^^
Any instance where you feel your experience with Criterion A , B or C is different in any way
Lack / difference / disruption / infrequency of criterion A3: daydreaming triggered , maintained or enhanced to exposure to repetitive movement (eg: flapping hands, rocking, or hand movement)
“connected daydreaming” as described by an experienced/recovered maladaptive daydreamer (who is now immersive) who created a relatively well known resource blog / safe place : Kyla Borcherds
Not fitting Criterion C: aka having pre-existing disorders or symptoms that encompass similar symptoms or may be better described by them (ex: ocd, adhd , asd, a dissociative disorder, psychosis, addiction(s) , dementia, bipolar , (c)ptsd , etc.)
Lack or difference / disruption / infrequency or criterion A6: Annoyed by being unable to daydream or when interrupted or curbed.
Lack / difference / infrequency in criterion B1 and/or B2 aka (distress (1) , impairment (2) (fluctuating between MaDD and ID)
daydreaming without visuals / having aphantasia while being a maladaptive daydreamer
Feeling like their other disorders/symptoms impact the content of their daydreams enough to where they feel is significant
Having mainly one criterion be more off-putting than other ones (less frequent or more frequent or anything else)
Having their daydreams be more affected by emotions to make them believe to be significant @mad-pride @radiomogai

Paracosm flag template
Definition: A paracosm is an imaginary world. Typically a paracosm is quite developed and may have its own imagined geography, laws, people, places, customs, history, language, etc. A famous example of a paracosm is Middle Earth. You do not have to be a maladaptive daydreamer to have a paracosm. (Definition taken from this post about MaDD terms).
This flag is supposed to be used for those who want to make flags for any of their paracosm's for any reason (for example a flag for a mermaid paracosm, a medieval paracosm, ect).
This flag is intended for those with Maladaptive Daydreaming, and/or Immersive Daydreaming. However, anyone with a paracosm can use it.
This is not a gender, tags are for reach!
-
This term is in relation to MaDD and daydreaming, it is not about a paraphalia.
-
Transparent versions of the symbols and accessible plain text are under the cut!

Filling in flags for daydream terms.
Paracorvior: A term describing one’s behavior in relation to the aesthetics of their immersive or maladaptive daydreams or when one’s behavior is related to or like that of the certain aesthetics of their immersive or maladaptive daydreaming. This can be aesthetics based on the behavior of the act of daydreaming or the daydreamer’s paras, paracosms, etc.
We& initially coined the term " paracoricvior " but " coric " is a gender , so we& changed the label to " paracorvior " from : para ( daydream prefix from " parallel " ) + core ( referring to aesthetics ie cottagecore , scenecore , dollcore , etc ) + vior ( from behavior )

malagender, malasexual, and malaromantic
back during the original run of this blog, at someone’s request, i designed flags for malagender, malasexual, and malaromantic. i’m not sure how i feel about them now but i thought i would repost them for proper documentation, since i noticed the flags on a couple of wikis lacking information that i could very easily provide! if i were to design them now i’d probably do it differently but it’s still worth recording. (if you see them credited to 1nklash, that’s my old deviantart!)
malagender:
Tumblr media
a gender that is influenced by one’s maladaptive daydreaming or another similar condition. mala- can be used as a prefix to further specify the user’s gender experience.
the blue and pink are just because those are frequently used on gender-related flags, but the colors are in a gradient to represent the mental transition between reality and daydreaming. the large grey stripe in the center symbolizes the gap between those two states and the gender one feels in those states. the grey stripe can also be replaced with other gender pride flags.
i made malatransgender as an example:
Tumblr media
malasexual and malaromantic:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the malasexual flag is purple because that is a color frequently used in flags to denote sexuality. the malaromantic flag is green for the same reason, but with romanticism. i know that purple and green usually specifically represent asexuality and aromanticism but i wasn’t really thinking about that at the time, i just wanted to distinguish the flags :P these flags have the gradients and the large stripe in the middle for the same reasons as the malagender flag.
i made malapansexual and malalesbian (with the old lesbian flag, this was before emily gwen designed the sunset lesbian flag) as examples

💭🔮✨ THE ULTIMATE DAYDREAMER’S GUIDE ✨🔮💭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
💭 What is it?
This is a guide both for those in the Daydreaming Community, or want to learn more about it. It is meant to be an archive of all things relating to MaDD & ID, and is curated/run/owned by @acircusfullofdemons with help from @kristillianlibraryarchive aka yours truly!
Tumblr media
💭 Can I link this on my blog/post/etc?
Yes!! The whole reason this doc was made was so that it can be passed around as a general resource, so you are more than welcome to link it anywhere you want. The same goes for anything linked within the doc itself — not that I own any of it anyway lol.
Tumblr media
💭 Can we give suggestions?
Suggestions are highly encouraged & appreciated! I am only one person running this doc, after all, and will not be able to uncover/document everything without some help. You can send me stuff through DMs, my ask box, discord ... basically any form of communication you may have with me.

Note
"Para" comes from the word "paracosm" aka what we call our daydream worlds!
It was coined here & also discussed in this post.
where does the term paras come from ?? bcz ive got madd (that's maladaptive daydreaming right bye im stupid) but mayb it's bcz ive never heard abt my chars having an alt name as paras so ive never felt the want to call them anyth else. but idk im rambling. im js curious.
ah okay so I don't actually know the origin of the word
But it's specifically used by daydreamers to kinda distinguish between ocs and characters that you're emotionally attached to yk? Like a lot of times character feels insufficient to describe what they are to me so I use para
Does that make sense?
(bestie I fear I forgot about this for way too long but I'm posting it now🙏)

System origin of the day ; Araisagenic
Tumblr media
Araisagenic is an origin for systems formed through MaDD and escapism. Headmates are created in paracosms, or influenced by them. They may evolve into other origins over time.
It is an adaptive origin.
