Does Biodynamic Farming Relate Only to Lunar Cycles?
Biodynamic wines are in trend. These wines are formed by using the grapes that are grown on the principles of bio-dynamism. Biodynamic agriculture is practiced in consonance with the happening or the non-happening of certain cosmological events. This type of farming is based on the principle that cosmic processes and events have an influence on our being. These cosmic events could be anything from a lunar cycle to a solar cycle. In most of the farms where this type of farming is practiced, it is the lunar cycle calendar which is drawn up for aligning different activities with different phases of moon.
It is to be noted that the cycle of moon and its gravitational pull exerted on earth do have a bearing on life processes of earth, from humans to biological agents. This force is responsible for creation of tides- high or low and the effect can also be witnessed in human bodies which comprises of 70 percent water. The same can be true even for plants, and particularly so for the grape vines. And, the same is also true for biological agents. But, is it only the lunar cycles which shall be considered? There are other forces present in the universe which also have a bearing on our lives. Do these have to be counted as well? Well, solar phenomenon and its cycles are one of these. Will these have any impact on the biodynamic farm practices and on wines made from these? Surely yes, but why are elaborate calendars of same not prepared in same way as lunar cycles.

Apart from these, do we have any other phenomenon which is to be considered? Even if these are to be considered, what farming activity shall be aligned with which of these. How will all of these together be taken into account? This would require an innate knowledge of astronomy as well as farming in order to know which farming activity does well under what all cosmic phenomenon.

Decoding the Mead Range of Maxwell Wines

The Maxwell winery has been family-run for three generations, making the Maxwell family a pioneer in the mead industry. Located out of McLaren Vale wine region, the South Australian company is currently owned and operated by Mark Maxwell. In the last 20 years, he has increased the vineyard holding to just under 100 acres, all now producing low cropping grapes for the estate label. The winery is best known for its production of red varieties in smaller quantities, however, it also grows Tempranillo, Grenache, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and the white variety Verdelho. 
Their Story
In 1970, Mark’s father Ken Maxwell and his wife Margaret started the family's first commercial winery named Daringa Cellars, at the McLaren Vale property. The winery had a tiny production consisting mostly of red wines from the likes of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1979 Ken sold the winery and started a new 80-tonne winery called Maxwell Wines.
When Ken started Daringa, he was of the belief that winemaking would be more cost-effective than growing grapes. The belief may have come from their Scottish background, starting with Ken’s father, William James Maxwell who travelled from Dumfries to carry out work as a sculptor in the 1880’s. Later in the early 1980s, against advice from his father, Mark bought a vineyard on Olivers Road and began to revitalise the Shiraz and Cabernet growing there.

In the year 1990, they together founded the Allan Scott Wines label.
Present Day
Over the years, the winery has encountered various changes in order to keep with the evolving tastes of consumers. At present, the three children of Allan and Cathy have also became a part of the business. The Marketing is taken care of by their daughter Victoria. Their son Josh works as the Chief winemaker at the winery. Sara, their younger daughter has studied winemaking and looks after the vineyards and wine growing process.

The land has been meticulously planted with vines that complement the soil types to maximise the potential. A highly rated winery, the establishment of Lindemans Wines dates back to 1843. The founder Dr. Henry Lindemans was a European settler who developed his passion for wines while travelling Europe and later along with wife Eliza, travelled to Australia with an aim to start life anew. Located in the Hunter Valley he started to begin with planting Shiraz, Riesling and Verdelho in his first ‘Cawarra’ vineyard.

The year 1980 saw the creation of the Bin 65 Chardonnay which became the star of all wine markets. Five years down the line in 1985, Henry decided to launch this range in the markets of Canada considering the popularity of fruit-driven and approachable wines in northern hemisphere. A great success this wine in the US and Canada compelled him to introduce it in the home country Australia. This decision proved to be a boon for the Australian wine markets while catching a worldwide adoration for the country’s wines.
Later, 18 more varieties of wines were incorporated in the popular Bin series. The  Lindemans Wines employs a talented team of winemakers which is headed by the Wayne Falkenberg, the Chief Winemaker. Heathcote- the Beautiful Land of Vineyards
Located in the Central Victoria, is a small town called Heathcote known for its beautiful vineyards. The warm and dry climate is ideal for growing Mediterranean grape varieties which are rendered with unique and diverse flavours owing to the ancient volcanic soil. Heathcote wines have established a reputation in the wine industry and in the recent years, the region has seen a growing number of wineries which offer new varieties and blends. It also holds a wine and food festival annually which is celebrated early in October on a weekend.

The region has gained a reputation in the wine industry for its earthy and rich Shiraz wines. With this, Heathcote wines continue to prosper and are now recognised internationally as well for even more grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Marsanne and Viognier and many others.
Some of the oldest wines in this region were planted in 1850’s by the Rathgen family. Much the disappointment, a few decades later these vines were destroyed by phylloxera vine louse. However, the Segafredo vineyard in Graytown which was planted in 1891 remained unaffected and cutting from this were further used by winemakers to produce high quality Shiraz.
The Heathcote region, located on an elevation ranging between 160- 380 meters provides good conditions for growing wines. Covered by the rich Cambrian soil (a red and deep soil having outstanding water retention), the region sees vast variations in the climatic conditions which lends different characteristics to the wine along with high quality.

A majority of the wineries are owned and operated by families with their second or third generation being employed in the business. Amongst the first commercial wineries is the Heathcote winery which was established in 1978 with an aim to produce wines which are reflective of the region along with the winery’s distinct style.
The Heathcote Wines have found themselves a place in the heart of the region, with their cellar door and winery being uniquely situated on the main street of Heathcote. The first vintage was released by the winery in 1981, and it is known for the best Shiraz and Viognier wines now.

History
Their journey began in 1950 when the Taylor family as Sydney wine merchants partnered with the Clare Valley Co-operative. This allowed their wines to be bottled and distributed under the label of Chateau Clare.
They now wanted to establish their own wine estate and in 1969, their quest to find the perfect land for establishing the family estate came to an end. They bought the land by the Wakefield River in the Clare Valley region of South Australia which once laid at the bottom of ocean around 600 million years ago. The first vine they planted on the land was Cabernet Sauvignon which was gifted to them by Wynn family of Coonawarra.
Their first vintages the 1973 Taylors Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1973 Taylors Estate Shiraz (Hermitage) were released on time. And it was then they saw their first major success with the Cabernet Sauvignon winning the Montgomery Trophy for Best Red Wine at the Adelaide Wine Show for Best Red Wine.
With time in order to cater to the public demand, they started grafting white wines in place of red which was a tough decision. In the coming years they acquired new pieces of neighbouring lands thus becoming the largest continuous vineyard in Australia. The coming years proved to be very promising earning them a name in the international wine markets.
Present Day
For consecutive four years 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Taylor Wines found its place amongst the Top 5 Wineries of the World by the World Association of wine writers and journalists. With their eyes fixed upon the future, they constantly indulge in developing sustainable winemaking practices realising the importance of the relationship between good business, environment and community.

[Yellow Tail] Wines is a brand established under the Casella family-run business. It was founded by the sixth generation of the family, John Casella in 2001. The winery is located in Yenda, a small town in Australia. History
The founders of the Casella family business, Filippo and Maria Casella immigrated to Australia in 1957 with a dream to build their own winery. They started making wine with the philosophy to bring friends and family together on any occasion. Recognizing the potential of Riverina region in New South Wales, Filippo bought the land near Yenda township in 1965.
They started with growing grapes for the local winemakers and with their hard work achieved an unbelievable success. From grape growing, they started winemaking. They established the Casella family winery in 1969.

Later in 1994, one of their sons John Casella decided to join the family business becoming the Managing Director of the Casella Family Brands. He joined with a simple vision to create quality Australian wines. People often get intimidated by the complex world of wines and thus end up avoiding them. They do not want to learn about the vintages, regions and varieties which every winemaker stresses upon. Thus, John decided to create rather non-traditional wines which can be enjoyed by everyone on all occasions.
It was in 2001 when John Casella created the [yellow tail] wines with an iconic label of yellow-footed rock wallaby. He was inspired by the simple philosophy to create approachable wines that could be enjoyed by everyone. The wanted his wines to break away from the traditional and complex barriers. He wanted his wines to be fun, easy to understand and easy to drink.
Present Day
At present, the brand is the Most Powerful Australian Brand in winemaking industry and fifth Most Powerful Wine Brand in the World. They are exporting wines to more than 50 countries. Their expert team consistently emphasises on delivering quality and taste which can be enjoyed by everyone and on every occasion.

History This family run business was founded by Richard Hamilton in 1873 when he planted the first stock in the Hamilton Vineyards located to the south of Adelaide. It was five generations down the family line, that his great-great grandson Dr. Richard Hamilton started a small winery in 1972. He was able to do this under the guidance of his father Burton Hamilton (a noted viticulturist) and his uncle Sydney Hamilton, a renowned vigneron.
After two years, Sydney Hamilton at the age of 76 brought a parcel of land in the Coonawarra region of South Australia and thus, established the Leconfield Wines. It was one of his life’s greatest ambition to grow and make a classic Cabernet Sauvignon. He chose the ‘terra rossa’ strip in Coonawarra which is one of the most famous wine regions. Before his retirement, Sydney introduced 65 vintages under the Leconfield label. In 1981, he retired and the estate was purchased by Dr. Richard Hamilton.
At Present
Since 1981, Richard Hamilton has added to the landholdings and plantings and the vineyard now stretches over an area of 43.7 hectares. The Coonawarra region where the vineyard is located is characterized by a maritime climate very much like the Bordeaux region in France. The region is known for the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in Australia.
The business is now taken care of by Dr. Richard Hamilton and wife Jette Hamilton along with their children  Annasofia and Thomas. They feel proud of their rich family heritage and share a passion for winemaking. They believe that for making a wine the most essential thing is the vineyard. There are many instances where women have played an important role in the wine making businesses in Australia. Whether it is the role of wine-makers, running a winery or simply working in the fields, women are playing a critical part. One of the success stories in winery business is that of the Bremerton Wines, a business led by two siblings of steely calibre- Rebecca and Lucy Willson. Both of them are the finalists in the 2018 EY Entrepreneur of the Year awards. They are among the 15 from South Australia state.
Bremerton wines has been established in 1988 in the Langhorne Creek area of Australia which is a part of the Fleurieu region within the state of South Australia.
