Definitions of Happiness
17 posts
What makes you happy? If you look at this question and reflect on your own happiness, you might stop and think, what is this question really asking me? Am I happy in terms of emotional well-being? Am I content with my life? Or it is simply just a question. After answering the question, you might find out that your responses differ from others and that the answers you gave might also differ from people who are younger or older than you. The term “happiness” can mean something different to each individual. When this question is asked, it is very important that one knows in what context is the term happiness being placed in. Happiness mean a variety of things. It can be attached to research about depression, or it can be used for economic research purposes. There are a range of disciplines that study happiness, but to what extent do they define the term happiness. Happiness, is different for each individual because of life experiences but life circumstances. We need to look at the different definitions of happiness and how people define it.

The Sociology of Happiness and Contentment: An Interview with Dr.Jordan McKenzie
Stu Horsfield
Tumblr media
Interviewer Stu Horsfield found it problematic defining happiness for sociological purposes. The problem, he says, is that the term happiness has many possible definitions such as “well-being” and “satisfaction”. In his essay, Horsfield mentions that the problem is that happiness definitions are used within the same context when it shouldn’t be such as a definition from an economic discipline, it should not be the same definition for psychologists because they are researching different things. For this purpose we ask the people surveyed what their major was, to see if the definition they gave was influenced by their discipline. Because there are many definitions of the term happiness, we look further into the question as to whether happiness stems from personal experience or societal standards such as following norms and values implemented by society. Based on both authors discussion, I ask a series of questions and document them, the concurrent themes in WCWP are happiness through meaningful relationships and technology, so both questions are also asked. They were also told to attach pictures of things that made them happy. Below are their responses and attached photographs. 🌻

Happiness and Its Discontents
Daniel M.Haybron
Tumblr media
In Hayrbrons short essay “Happiness and Its Discontents” he questions what it means to be happy and states that one might answer this question based on how satisfied they are with their life. This question is only one of the hundreds of questions asked when studying happiness. Haybron defines happiness by how satisfied one is with life, but he states“happiness embodies judgment about your life, what matters for your happiness is something for you to decide”. To some extent, happiness is only dependent on the things that matter to an individual. Haybron brings up an important question where he looks further into happiness being an emotional phenomenon. This brings us to think about whether happiness is an actual emotion and if it is an emotion, does it change or does it stay the same.

While studying the readings from Daniel M.Haybron and Stu Horsfield, one of the main things they both discussed is how difficult it is to study happiness because of the many definitions of it has. As they write their academic essays they try to define happiness, however, I wanted to look further into the definitions of happiness because I feel that there is no definite definition for the term. The following are answers submitted by second-year students from different universities in California. The survey questions are without bias and ask different questions that relate to the readings. Based on their answers we see that they all have different definitions for the term happiness and that many of the things that make them happy are similar to one another such as friends and family. We also see that as we study students, their definitions of happiness do not align with their major, their responses are mostly based on experience and not influenced by their different disciplines. 🌻

Happiness and Fulfillment 🌻
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cynthia defines happiness as a feeling of fulfillment or content towards a situation or in a situation. When Cynthia is with her family, she feels fulfilled, her family brings her joy and comfort and when she is with her family she feels content. Cynthia is a second-year sociology major at the University of California San Diego. When asked what makes her happy she says that friends, family, animals, acts of kindness, and food makes her the happiest. A lot of things make her happy and she states that she has a lot to be thankful for because she lives a pretty happy life because of the people that are in her life and other small things that add to that happiness. Based on personal experience, Cynthia says that she has a lot to be thankful for. She has her health, her family is doing well and she is surrounded by people who love her. She states that happiness is a positive emotion and that positive emotions can change because one might feel happier towards one thing than another. These meaningful relationships she has with her friends and family are also possible because of technology. She uses social media such as SnapChat and Instagram to keep herself updated with her family that lives in Fresno so social media does have an influence on her happiness.

People are my Happiness🌻
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elizabeth Segura is a second-year sociology major at the University of California Riverside. When she started college she found it hard at times to feel that sense of happiness and comfort she felt when she was surrounded by her friends every day in high school. Eli defines happiness as being surrounded by the people you love and being successful in what you set out to do. Because being surrounded by people makes her happy, she does think that meaningful relationships are important for her happiness. Her friends and family are the reason why she always feels motivated to continue studying because they support her and feel happy when she succeeds in school. When asked if she thought that happiness could change, she stated that yes “because everyone can believe that a certain someone or something is their happiness but that could change as someone grows older and their idea of happiness changes along with them.” Because happiness does change you can feel joy and sadness when things change so she does consider happiness to be an emotion. Things that make Eli happy are friends and family, she considers them to be a big part of her life and does think that these meaningful relationships are possible to have because of technology.

Happiness Keeps Me Going🌻
Tumblr media
As a second-year student studying general biology at the University of California San Diego, Delia defines happiness as a feeling that helps you keep going. When Delia came into UCSD she said that she found happiness in others, the feeling of making others happy made her happy and gave her the motivation to push through the hard times in her first year. As her second year has started and her first quarter is coming to an end, Delia states that many of the things that made her happy came from different people, that happiness itself does not change, the only thing that changes are the things that make one happy such as receiving good grades or going out with friends. Happiness is, as she states, socially dependent. When happiness is socially dependent it means that one follows the norms and values that society has placed upon them, rather than finding out those things on your own. Because she believes in this type of happiness, she sometimes feels that making others happy and pleasing others is something she must do and as an emotion, happiness should be expressed with joy around others. Things that make Delia happy are being with friends and family and because they make her happy she does agree that meaningful relationships are important for her happiness. When asked if technology has helped influence her happiness by connecting with others through social media, she states that it has no type of influence on her happiness.

God is Happiness 🌻
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“He has no design upon us, but to make us happy. . . . Who should be cheerful, if not the people of God?” When Sandy, a foundational mathematics and Spanish major at Cal Baptist University, was asked what her definition of happiness was, she added a quote, defining happiness as the guidance of God to make people feel complete no matter what circumstances they are in. Sandy is a firm believer that happiness is something that God has given people and that because of that it should not change. Once you feel happy you should always feel that sense of happiness and joy because happiness is not temporary. Because of her definition, Sandy does state in her survey that happiness is not an emotion because emotions change all the time and if happiness is an emotion then it's temporary happiness and that is not genuine. Many of the things that make Sandy happy are a part of what she calls “Gods work”. She believes God puts different people in our paths and they bring us happiness. Those people are important for her happiness but they do not determine whether she lives a happy life, she lives the life God has given her and he makes sure that she is always happy. When asked if her relationships with others were available even more with the use of technology, she stated that no, technology does not help her relationships with others, therefore it does not influence happiness.

Happiness in Science 🌻
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Natalie Ulloa, a political science major at the University of California San Diego defines happiness as the feeling of joy when chemicals, such as serotonin or dopamine, are released by the brain into the body. Because these chemicals in the body are always being released, happiness does not change for that reason, instead Natalie believes that happiness changes because of different things in our environment. A song in the environment can bring you happiness in different moments and when you are in an environment where you are surrounded by many people you can feel even happier. Since we can feel happy at different stages in life, happiness can be an emotion because it is something you feel. Often that emotion comes from things that occur in our life and every personal experience could have an effect on our emotions. Personal experiences can have an influence on how happy one is with their life. When asked the question, do you feel that you live a happy life, Natalie answered that “for the most part I feel that I have a lot of things that do make me happy and overall do give me somewhat of a happy life, but there are times I really struggle to be happy but I try really hard not to dwell on the negative emotions and pretend that everything is okay so I can get through basic day-to-day activities”. When she does feel happy, it is often because of her bestfriends. Natalie does feel that those meaningful relationships with her bestfriends are important for her happiness because they give her support and comfort. She also states that because of technology, she is able to talk to her bestfriends while she is out here in San Diego studying. The use of technology helps her stay connected but she also states that techonolgy can make one sad because of old pictures or because of all of the negative things that people may post.
