Alex knew that something was wrong. He could see that there was a hole in his chest where John had shot him, and he could feel Clarissa's pain from her throbbing wrist, but he couldn't feel any pain in his own chest yet. His hearing seemed to be affected, too. It felt like he was underwater, trying to hear the sounds above the surface.
Huh. That's a little weird... He thought hazily, the world suddenly shifting from the street to Ultra headquarters. Clari was screaming for Jedikiah, her hands pressing hard on his chest and back. In a rush, pain and all of his other senses assaulted him, and he cried out, more in shock than pain.
"Clari... Couldn't let him take you. Are you okay?" He managed, meeting her eyes. He took in her appearance - besides her wrist, she seemed to be alright. Alex felt some of his anxiety leave him, and he let his head rest against the floor. She was safe. She was alright. They could get through this.
Jedikiah was just about to leave the office when he heard the commotion. He raked a hand through his hair and immediately began barking orders. Of course Ross and Clarissa would be in the center of a crisis.
"Clarissa, you're doing great, but when the medics get here, you have to let go," he told her, his words firm but his voice gentle. "They're going to take care of him, and we're going to get you cleaned up. You need to tell me what happened."
Alex clenched his jaw at the ultimatum, his fingers twitching as he decided how he was going to attack. “I care for her, too. How about you let her decide what she does, Young? She’s a grown woman - she gets to make her own choices. You’re so scared that she won’t come back with you that you’re willing to kidnap her. What the hell is wrong with you?”
He couldn’t hear anything else from Clarissa, which made him sick. He had to act, and he had to do it soon. There was so much more at stake than just his life in that moment. In that instant, Clarissa’s life and freedom were more valuable to him than anything else. It might have surprised him if he wasn’t staring down the barrel of John’s pistol.
“I won’t let you take her, so you’d better be ready to pull that trigger.”

Alex cursed, loudly and angrily, and launched himself into a run in the direction that he heard the commotion in. How could he have been so stupid? He’d let his guard down for only an instant, and she was gone. It was his fault, and it would be his ass if she was hurt or captured.
“Clarissa!” The shout was vocal and telepathic as he rounded the corner, his steps halting as he faced a familiar figure. John Young stood before him, gun drawn and aimed, right at Alex.
“Young,” he growled, unable to stop the animosity in his voice. This man had betrayed them all, and - as if that wasn’t enough - he was trying to take Clarissa from him. Alex couldn’t let that happen.

Alex caught her as she stumbled, suddenly aware of how extremely exposed they were. It was late, and the streets weren’t as crowded as they usually were. A pit of anxiety began to form in his stomach, and adrenaline spurred him into action. “Clari, we need to go,” he murmured in her ear as he helped her stand. “We’re too exposed out here. We can teleport in the alley. I don’t like this - something is wrong.”

@ultraxagent promised me this will end in cuteness.
She still wasn’t used to being looked at instead of looked through. It was something that gave her an exhilarating rush and brought a smile to her face every time her and Alex went out on a date. At the same time, she found comfort from the overwhelming feelings by wrapping her small arm around Alex’s, hooking their arms close and keeping her shoulder pressed close to him as possible.
They had just left the movie theatre and were walking back to their apartment building –well, walking for the most part, at least. It was fun, pretending to be normal– when Clarissa heard a familiar hum in her mind, her head whipping behind her as she walked, stumbling as her foot caught the uneven pavement.
Casimiro. Go home.
