Hello, hello- Zhongi character study!!! I'm in, and the amount of detail is impressive! Well done! ♥️💕🙏💖💞✨

Behold!!! A design study of a character that appeared for two (2) episode exactly and fucked off into the ether!! Truly no one could have foreseen this! (notes under the cut)

Something I really appreciate in Escaflowne is their non-human charadesign. It scratches my uncanny valley in a very good way. This is but a pale imitation of how fucked up Zongi looks

Left was made referencing the show, right was made applying what I'd learned (and trying out clothing). Couldn't find many good refs of him so i got my own:

I didn't include pics of the inside of his mouth since i didnt have use for it, but if you do: it's bright turquoise.

Notice that his hair originally looked much straighter, almost greasy/heavy. His face is also not as long as I'd like. I've changed his nose quite a bit since im not trying to copy style here, but rather to adapt it to me.

Some fun details i noticed * He has claws!! They're not a prominent as i drew them, but they're clearly present when he holds Plaktu's head. They look dark there, but in an earlier scene they look like fleshy extensions of his fingers. * His pupils expand and contract. You can see it clearly when comparing his first appearance (bottom left) and his conversation with Hitomi (middle left). Part of the reason his eyes look so foggy in that first scene is that is pupils are relaxed when talking to Folken! *Incidentally, while reporting to Dilandau at the end of ep 11, his body language is relaxed but his pupils are contracted already: he doesnt trust him * His eyes are super super reflective. Notice that the "spark" you would normally find in other characters eyes, straight up occupies half the space in his. That's another thing i wish i'd done better. * His color palette is a nightmare. Man loves nothing more than to stand in a dark, badly lit room that completely changes it. Overall, i wish i'd gone a little more "washed out" on his body so his eyes would pop more. Also his lips are much brighter than i made them

Some doppelgangers headcanons i developed while drawing this: *Their markings are tattoos, not naturally occurring. They serve to identify each other, like a name would. *They have no societal gender, and very very little sexual dymorphism. They take on the gender of their face, or whatever gender non-doppelgangers give them * Insane night vision!! * Doppelganger racism must go crazy. Maybe that's where the whole "cursed to die in battle" comes from? * They all have various degrees of facial blindness. A good 20% of the reasons Zongi associated with Folken in the first place is that his hair color makes him easy to recognize. *They wear draped clothes, instead of cut. Meaning they wear rectangular fabric held by pins and draped/wrapped around themselves instead of cutting and sewing clothes out of fabric. Here I improvised it, but if I were to do it again i would reference togas or something

Some stupid facts about myself: * I called him the wrong name the whole time I was drawing him. * Viego has three (3) letters and zero (0) syllabes in common with Zongi *Viego is, in fact, a league of legends character

I was a woman with stubble and a receding hairline, alternating back and forth between different terrible haircuts before I got laser and bangs and became the woman you see before you today. And when I talk to some of these girls now who get hrt and laser IMMEDIATELY after coming out, it's got me having mixed feelings. On the one hand, I'm happy for them, it's really a testament to how much we've fought to get access to medical transition. on the other hand, they all ask me where I get my confidence from and literally it's because I used to look like a crossdressing faggot before I looked like a woman, and people still gendered me correctly about 50% of the time back then and it made me realize that nobody fucking notices little bumps in your clothes or the spot you missed shaving. An actress who forgets a line can still deliver a memorable performance.

⚜️Story/Abilities🔘

⚜️She was a quincy way back when Yhwach first reigned. She was a standard healer and a devout priestess preaching the word of Yhwach.

⚜️When Yhwach fell, she fled to the world of the living with her clergy and they all started a church with Sister Mercy, the head priestess of the church.

⚜️They converted people and spread the word of Yhwach in a disguise of a new fringe religion.

⚜️When the day came that Yhwach purged the remaining Quincy's souls to empower himself during the Auswählen, Seraph was the only surviving priestess.

⚜️She knew that it was time, so she took up the staff and crowned herself the high priestess

⚜️She returned to the Wandereich to show her undying loyalty and servitude to the Quincy king.

⚜️Yhwach blessed her with her current abilities and made her into a sternritter, bestowing upon her the letter “M” The Mercy

🔘Detect sin “Identify Sin”🔘

She can tell by one touch what someone’s sins are and what weighs heaviest on their heart

🔘Forgive sin “Mercy”🔘

She has the ability to free someone of their guilt, sorrow, and anguish from their sins if they are truly seeking forgiveness and mercy

🔘Persecute sin “Divine Punishment”🔘

If someone is not truly loyal to Yhwach in their heart, she will sentence them to penance. The severity depends on their sins and their loyalty of Yhwach

She is still a healer similar to those in the 4th division of the soul society, but she uses reishi to heal

▫️Her second form is that of a biblically accurate angel. She grows two pairs of angelic wings on her torso and one pair from her head.

▫️She has the abilities to strengthen those who have sought prayer from her like sending a wave of buffs throughout the army

▫️On the command of Yhwach, Seraph would be able to kill all those who followed her church in the world of the living. All the souls would go to heal Yhwach alike to the Auswählen, but no Quincy souls would be lost. Basically a free heal for Yhwach.

⚜️She probably dies when Yhwach completes the Auswählen a second time during the battle against the soul society

⚜️When As Nodt was slain, she felt it in the air and felt her resolve weaken

⚜️The small moment of hesitation from her at obeying Yhwach from her mourning led to her being seen as “disposable” and killed during the second Auswählen

🪞Details🪞

🌑She wears a cloth around her eyes, not because she is blind, but because she believes sight is the root of sin. Her holiest form of penance is to blind the sinners.

🌑She does not often use a weapon because she is more of a behind the lines healer and works closely with Yhwach to ensure his fleet is loyal

🌑However, she does have a large halberd in the shape of the Quincy cross

🌑To activate her weapon, she stabs herself in the chest where she has a QUincy sigil, and the weapon materializes as she pulls it from her chest

🌑She has an odd relationship with As Nodt

🌑Since he is always haunted by his past, he sought her prayer and forgiveness, his prayer was so pure and sincere that Seraph shed a tear for him

🌑She swore to be his “Guardian Angel” if he vowed to faithfully serve Yhwach

🌑This was the closest to love that either of them had experienced and will ever experience9

some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.
