Alice withheld any remarks about how there were most certainly people at fault. Umbrella, Spencer Parks...

Alice herself. She tried not to dwell on what-ifs, but when she spent so much time on her own, it was hard not to let her thoughts drift there. She sometimes imagined how things would've turned out if exposing the corporation went to plan. She wished she had chosen a better spot to meet with Lisa.

Alice wasn't going to dump any of that onto K-Mart, though. Her optimism elicited a faint smile. It felt like a lifetime ago that she was that way herself. "Yeah?" She could use a little reminder every now and again that despite what the world had turned into, there were still things to smile about. "You must be happy with the convoy, huh?" It wasn't hard to imagine. There were good people in it.

As she watched the various members milling about, it crossed the back of Alice's mind that she could be happy with them. If she were able to stay, anyway. "How long have you been traveling with them for?"

"I'm sorry things turned out this way."

“You don’t have to apologize!” K-Mart remarked. Despite — well, everything, really — she still managed to maintain her optimism. If the apocalypse hadn’t happened, then K-Mart never would’ve had the opportunity to meet amazing people like Alice, Claire, and Carlos. If the apocalypse hadn’t happened, she’d never have come into her gender identity fully. “It’s not your fault. It’s not anybody’s fault, really. Plus, there are good things about all of this happening the way it did!”

Alice often tried to convince herself that she didn't need this sort of stuff. It made coping with her decision to live in relative solitude easier, but when somebody as bold as Claire came along? Damnit, she cracked straight away.

After Claire's arms wrapped around Alice, she sagged right into the embrace. It had been too long since she had seen a familiar, friendly face. "...It's good to see you again," she murmured, returning it.

"...Not really," Alice clarified after a moment, fixing her attention back on the magazines she was reloading. She was glad the virus hadn't made her able to do that. Although her powers had gotten her out of various dangerous situations, she would have preferred to have none at all.

She seriously felt for Matt, who had certainly been dealt the worse hand by Umbrella and the virus. That wasn't to say she kept him around out of pity or anything, though. Matt was a friend. Alice cared about him and enjoyed having him as a travel partner. The way his mutations had altered his body didn't change that fact.

(Maybe Alice didn't view herself as entirely human these days, but she had a hard time looking into that eye of his and seeing him as anything but.)

A twinge of concern seeped into her otherwise closed-off countenance, and she furrowed her brows. Had she made him feel this way? "You and I are a package deal now. You know that, don't you?"

I just got you back. I don't have it in me to say goodbye again.

Alice placed a hand on his arm. "Whatever else happens, I'm facing it with you. Alright?" She gave a reassuring squeeze.

Nemesis' single blue eye blinked. Was she serious? With all that Umbrella had done to them, it honestly wouldn't surprise him if she really could hear his thoughts. Or did she mean... that he was staring at her too intently, his curiosity and other emotions written clearly on his mangled face? Either way, he had been staring, and that was pretty damn rude. "Sor-ry," he said, averting his gaze.

He hadn't meant to stare, it was just that he was so glad to see her again, to have a friend with him, and utterly bewildered as to why she let him tag along with her. Since all that nastiness in Raccoon went down, he was happy to be around someone who understood what he'd gone through and who wasn't afraid of him. And yet, he wasn't exactly fun to look at, and he slowed Alice down a lot... didn't he?

He'd been thinking about all that and more as he stared, and those thoughts continued even after he'd averted his gaze. "You know... Ith you eth-er didn't want ne... to stay with you... you can just say so. I would-n't de othended." Sad, maybe, to be alone again, but not offended at all.
