daily affirmations:
i am kind
i am in control of my emotions
it does not bother me when someone is in the kitchen while i was planning to be in there alone
everyone in the house has the right to be in the kitchen
i am kind and in control of my emotions even when someone is in the kitchen while i was planning to be in there alone

Been haunted by a kids interactive exhibit my sister and I went to some 25 years ago. I could remember blurry bits and pieces, even was able to find the museum that housed it. But thanks to reddit I was finally able to find proof that it existed and the name of it and I feel so free now.

Hey imagine having a garden separated from the street by a high wall, and then building a ramp to your garden with a cat door at human head level, both at just the right height so your dog can peer outside without bothering anyone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This way, the dog can safely observe the world outside and judge everyone without any risk of someone getting out or in. And why would you want the cat flap on human head level? Simple. Anubis mural.

having anti punitive justice morals sucks because you want to say "man that guy sucks he should get hit with hammers until he dies" but you also want to make it clear you don't think anyone should be put in charge of the 'hit people with hammers until they die" machine.

I rly hate the Satanic Panic & the moral panic surrounding violence in video games in the 90s, coz it's now impossible to talk about the social implications of violent video games in a realistic sense.
No, violence in video games does not create serial killers in the way most people imagine it would.
However, it's very important to notice how after 9/11, a lot of violent video games pivoted their content from silly gratuitous cartoon gore to more realistic military shooters set in the Levant from a US American lens. It's also important to notice the connection of these games & their toxic online multi-player voice chats to Gamer Gate in 2014.
It's obviously not as black & white as it was presented in the 80s & 90s, I dont think everyone who played early Call of Duty games is a white supremacist who wants to join the military to kill people in the middle east, but I think it's dangerous to pretend like video games or any media can't have an impact on the way people think about violence.
I think what makes all the difference here is how that violence is portrayed, what the message behind it is, what the motives are behind the people who crafted that message, who the victims of that violence are, how they are portrayed & the greater cultural context that surrounds it.

Some of my favorite tiny documentarians:
Defuntland (like op mentioned) - videos on no-longer-in-operation theme park concepts (I recommend starting with his videos on the Garfield dark ride, Shapeland/the history of lines, and Disney Channel’s Theme which is about discovering who wrote the Disney channel theme song.)
Jenny Nicholson - everything but mainly theme parks and movies (I recommend starting with her videos on the starwars hotel, the vampire diaries, avatar land, evermore theme parks or literally any other video I love her stuff dearly.)
Izzzyzzz - mainly ‘00s and ‘10s nostalgia (I recommend starting with their videos on The Path, the Sims lore, and lost and cancelled dolls)
Drew Gooden - anything but I would say he focuses his most videoessay-est videos on current media trends (I recommend starting with his videos on gambling, efficiency in comedy, the death of laugh tracks, and how not to revive a show)
Wendigoon - horror and spooky scary things (I recommend starting with the disturbing iceberg video or the video on unit 731)
Eddy Burback - anything and everything but if I had to pick a through-line I guess he focuses on current events? (I recommend starting with his videos on the Apple Vision Pro, ghost kitchens, and Metaverse)
StrangeAeons: videos on mainly fandom history with lots of tumblr deep dives! (I recommend starting with their reading of Onisions books, Snapewives, bitofearth, HIVLiving, or fake tumblr posts)
Kurtis Conner: usually his videos lean more ‘commentary’ but I highly recommend his Potterheads video and Furries and the Ethics of Cringe Culture, both of which are still ‘comedy’ videos but are pretty sensitive and get real interviews to understand the cultures talked about. Also check out his video on conspiracies getting crazier, ‘why is everything so boring now’, and vision healing masterclass.)
HM: MistaGG - I would say he falls more into the commentary genera but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention his series on ‘disturbing documentaries’
More HMs (again less deep dives and more commentary): Jarvis Johnson, ChadChad, and Jordan Adika.
its crazy that a lot of what we call 'video essays' these days are basically low budget documentaries on increasingly weird and niche topics. no network approval no tv budget just one guy with maybe a hired editor/writer and a couple of friends willing to read voice lines. and then they put it on youtube like its no big deal. insane.
