Week15s’ final book
Concept:  Form: The form of this book was inspired by the first class of investigations into Estonia. Estonia's architecture and alphabetic characters let me grab the keywords "structure" and "connection", and the inspiration for the pop-up book came to life.
Content: I chose the "Tunnel Book" structure among many forms of pop-up books, which is the most suitable one for my theme. The purpose of this structure is to let people "look through the hole" and explore the profound connotations of This poem. Each page of the book corresponds to a line in the poem in order, and the elements expressed in the poem. It contains Estonian landscapes, Estonian mythology, elements of daily life, human organs and the universe. The author appreciates Lao-zi thoughts and expresses his pursuit of "nonaction", "natural" and "emptiness" in his poems. So I try to express these feelings by combining simple elements with symbolizing realistic things.
Color: The color choice of this book is based on the representative color "black and white" of the Taoism as described in the poem.
Type: The choice of fonts is “Centaur”, a type of “revival” and “old-style” fonts that give an elegant, historic, mysterious feel.
Graphics: The graphics are processed using the "color halftone" effect, which corresponds to the "big hole/small hole" in the poem.
Cover: I made a cover for the book. Taoism advocates nonaction, so I try to make this book concise but profound. Since the whole book is like a tiny retro theater, the cover lens represents the camera, and opening the cover is like opening a wonderful story. It is also like a door, opening this door and walking into a world of emptiness.
Kits: I made the magnifier page because I considered the needs of elder readers while increasing the fun of the book. Three pop-up cards provide readers with some basic knowledge of Estonia.

Week14
The color choice of this book is based on the representative color "black and white" of the Taoism as described in the poem. The choice of fonts is "Centaur", a type of "revival" and "old-style" fonts that give an elegant, historic, mysterious feel. The graphics are processed using the "color halftone" effect, which corresponds to the "big hole/small hole" in the poem.
This week I chose a more solid, suitable material for the book and recreated the entire book. I added some elements to make the story more complete. At the same time, I made a cover for the book. Taoism advocates nonaction, so I try to make this book concise but profound. Since the whole book is like a tiny retro theater, the cover lens represents the camera, and opening the cover is like opening a wonderful story. It is also like a door, opening this door and walking into a world of emptiness.

Week13
I chose the "Tunnel Book" structure among many forms of pop-up books, which is the most suitable one for my theme. The purpose of this structure is to let people "look through the hole" and explore the profound connotations of this poem. Each page of the book corresponds to a line in the poem in order, and the elements expressed in the poem. The first page describes “the flow of thoughts”; the second page describes the landscape and architecture of Estonia, combined with Estonian magical objects and Estonian letters. The letter "Z" is like a magic boat floating above the landscape architecture of Estonia; the third page describes the "rain" in the poem; the fourth page corresponds to the "human body" in the poem; the last page shows the "black hole", which makes all tangible things belong to nothingness.

Week13
Because Estonian mythology has a complex story background and many gods, it is difficult to simplify the elements. Then I try to symbolize the Estonia mystical and magical objects. I extract the objects of "White Ship" and "Sacred Stones" and combine them with the Estonian alphabet to become the elements in the story.

Week12
Idea 2: An extension of the concept of "connection" and "architecture". Use more abstract, symbolic and structured elements to express the keywords in the poetry. Geometry such as squares, lines, and circles represents the flow of the thought, and the stars in the universe.

Week12
According to the research results, I have three ideas for the show form of pop-up books.
Idea 1: Demonstrate the concepts of “Estonian landscape”, “mythology” and “cosmology” through the form of “depth of field”. Use realistic oil painting style. The "finder frame" of the first page corresponds to the concept of "hole", and when people look from the front, there is a feeling of exploration.

Week12
This week I have conducted in-depth research on the background of the poetry. Exploring the poet and the "Lao-zi Thought" mentioned in the poem.
The poet himself: Krull’s poetry is strongly rooted in the Estonian landscape; Krull crafts poems that seem straightforward and accessible but have a remarkable depth upon close study; Krull has been strongly attracted to mythologies, creation stories and cosmology.
Lao-zi Thought: State of silent awareness; Become totally empty; Quiet the restlessness of the mind; Dao is usually translated as the Way, or the Path; Deep level of nature.
In addition,  I studied the structure of pop-up books and found some inspirations.

Week11
I got the translation of the poem this week. I continue to extract keywords from poetry and find that they contain such elements: holes, the universe, daily necessities, nature, human body and thought. So I decided to continue exploring in two directions.
Direction 1: Continue to explore the expression of “structure” and use the concept of origami to reflect the words “architecture” and “connection”.
Direction 2: Print the whole poem on the film paper for cutting and shape combination. The abstract, fuzzy form is used to express the elements in the poem, and the twisted form of the film paper is used to imitate the shape of nature and the human body.

Week10
Cause I don't understand the meaning of the poem, I extracted some keywords from my personal feelings about it. Curious, mysterious—the whole poem repeats the word “augud”, also giving a childlike feeling; at the same time, by investigating Estonian, the letters have some features like “~”, giving a sense of movement. Many words appear in pairs, which makes people feel "connection"; and by searching Estonian itself, it is found that the building is very characteristic and cute. Can be combined with the letter itself, I have the concept of "structure". I finally decided to make a pop-up book that combines the above feelings.

Week10
Language Research: I did some basic research on Estonian. Found it is a widely used Southern Finnic Language. Estonian and German have similar language systems, Swedish and Russian are also important sources. Its word order is considerably more flexible than English, but the basic order is subject–verb–object.  I also did some research on their letter form.

Week09s’ movie trailer
Create storyboards on the sketchbook and shoot the shots in sequence. Find the right soundtrack and make a movie trailer by using Adobe Premiere.
Concept: The Mist talks about one night a ferocious storm hits a small town, damaging people’s house. The storm is accompanied by a strange mist the following morning. People are trapped in a store, they are afraid and helpless. Even more frightening is that there are unknown creatures in the mist, which constantly killing people. The tone of the movie is dark and horrible. Dark night (black) and mist (white) are basic tones. There are several classic scenes and elements in the movie, which are cage, light, mist, net, storm and blood, thus I explored base on these elements.
Continuous experimentation and exploration led me to the idea of using letters to interact with the environment. I use the rich texture of the hair net to create the background, and use different composition to show the feeling of being trapped. During the experiment, I continued to explore the use of letter materials. Finally, I found that the shrink film is sturdy and waterproof. It is easy for me to compose the letters on the net, and it can be combined with the fog effect created by the fog maker. Combined with the film, I decided to use three light effects to show different scenes, which are global light, spotlight and flashlight, they can create diverse scenes and maintain consistency. The pure white background created by the global light mimics the dense mist, contrasting with the title and the net texture, expressing the mysterious artistic conception; the use of the spotlight mimics the scene of the forest search and rescue in the movie, and people’s focal point moves with the spotlight and finally freezes on the title. It presents the fear and nervous emotions step-by-step. The shape of the spotlight is also like moonlight, and the meaning of the full moon is usually mysterious and ominous, as if the monsters are hidden in the night and ready to do sth.; the use of the flashlight is focused on the dusty window sill, imitating the scene of the victims in the movie, the endless fear spread in the dark, trapped things are lonely and helpless.
