“You could give some people a drop of water, and they’d still appreciate you. You could give other people the entire ocean, and they’d still take you for granted.”

On Depression and Suicide in the Medical World
It can be invisible. It can feel impossible. But you are not alone. Doctors and medical students are at a higher risk of experiencing depression and suicidal thoughts. It is an epidemic.
Listen, observe, and act.
The warning signs of suicide are subtle and may not always be clear, but they are there.
Always take suicide threats seriously. People often become afraid and don’t act at all. And it is even more important to listen to someone if they come to you about their feelings. You may be the only person they decide to tell. You might be the only one who can help them.
Other common signs include: - Withdrawing from people - Engaging in reckless behaviour - Sleeping too little or too much - Extreme mood swings - Being easily agitated/irritated
When someone has shown warning signs and then suddenly seems to have improved, act immediately. This sudden calmness is a sign that they have chosen a date and are going to end their life soon. This is often why close friends and relatives are shocked and confused when they find out about the suicide.
I don’t think that mental illness and suicide are talked about often enough, especially in the medical world. I can feel the stigma everyday and it feels like a heavy weight. Statistically, it wouldn’t make sense that I am the only one with these depressive thoughts. But it is like drowning in an ocean. The ocean is massive and you aren’t always able to see the other people drowning with you. But it feels like you are the only one. And because no one really talks about it, you have to pretend that you know how to swim. Paint on a smile and pretend that you have your shit together. Because that’s the expectation, isn’t it?
But you know what? It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to admit that you can’t get up on your own right now and you need help. Everyone falls down every once in awhile, but sometimes our legs become broken and we can’t go on without some outside help.
You are more important than you think, and it does get better. And I know it seems like it won’t and that it seems impossible, but I believe that it is better to fall through life than to have never experienced it at all. There are people who love you and would be absolutely miserable without you. You might think, “the world won’t stop spinning if I kill myself” –
but that’s only because the world doesn’t know you.
Sincerely,
A medical student trying to get their shit together.

“don’t tell me nice things. I don’t know how to listen to nice things. tell me something horrible. tell me about the worst thing you’ve ever done. tell me about what scares you. tell me that you can’t sleep you can’t eat you can’t breathe right anymore. I’ll listen but I won’t fix anything. can’t fix anything for you anyway only you can do the fixing. I’ll listen, though. I’m a born listener. I can listen like nobody you’ve ever met so please, for goodness’ sake, make my skin crawl. tell me something that’ll keep me up tonight.”
— talk to me right
