“Oh good. I always have this fear that people think I’m annoying so I want to stop talking but I really can’t. I’ve been told if I was going to then I’d have to take pills or something and I don’t really have the attention span to do something like that every day, you know?”

“This is fun for me,” Ari admitted, snapping her toolbox onto her hip. “Don’t worry about it. I like working on her.” She patted the wall gently. “I feel like I learn something new each time I open her up. It’s fascinating. I could work on her my whole life and barely scratch the surface.”

“Well that’s certainly interesting.” Zephyr tilted her head. “Does the ship have female energy?” She chuckled and stroked one of the panels. “I’ve heard men talk about machines like they were a she but I assumed that was something demeaning. It doesn’t feel that way from you.”

“Oh.” Lyra felt a little foolish, as Andromeda indicated she did not need their contact information. She did not normally make mistakes like that. When Andi mentioned Cygnus treating her fairly, that surprised them. “He does not like that I resemble his sister. It’s not my fault his parents programmed me like this, but he takes his pain out on me. I don’t blame him for it.”

“Grief can do strange things to people.” She agreed, looking down at her legs. “Sometimes anger is the only thing that comes out when you’re in pain. I’d say he needs to work through it but I don’t know him and I doubt he’d take my advice.” Andi looked back up at her. “But I know about living with pain.”

“I’ve never been to the Milky Way” Cygnus mused when the place was mentioned. He knew what sort of establishment it was, but it wasn’t somewhere he’d ever had a burning desire to go to. “The Capricorn is too loud. There’s too much noise” he added on in his musing “I don’t like it there” Unlike the Milky Way, he actually had been there and those few times had left him feeling overstimulated and overwhelmed.

“That’s fair. Sometimes noise is too much for me too. Which is weird because there are other times where I can shut myself up and I’m making noise. You would think it would be one thing or the other but it’s not it’s a weird mix of both and that can be confusing. I’m probably not... making things any better.” Tyler pursed his lips. “Sorry. I talk a lot. Mum says I can’t help it but I need to be mindful of it.”

It takes a lot to make a man like Odd Harker… uncomfortable. But it’s something he often experiences, doing business with Silas. It’s a necessary evil- two powerful men in the corporate world were bound to lock horns eventually- and it had been luck alone that meant Odd talked them into a tentative… symbiosis. He’ll overlook those rumors of Silas undercutting the Milky Way with other high-up figures, so long as Tross was willing to play ball. “Silas!” He’s unhappy to find upon his arrival at the Capricorn that the other man is… absent. He scowls, gold-glowing tongue wetting his lips. “Of course. I should never expect him to keep himself to his word… Insufferable prick.”

He has time to waste now, letting out a long sigh and motioning for a drink to be brought round- just in time to catch Zephyr walking by. He almost feels bad for the girl- he’s seedy on his best days, constantly accompanied by something pretty. But at the very least he’s not seemingly tricked them into having any sort of affection for him. “Zeph, sweetness, over here.” He insists as he takes his drink. “I’m looking for Tross. Any clue where he might be? His last correspondence told me to meet him here… and here I am, with my thumb up my ass.”

Silas was mad at her but that wasn’t exactly news. She was technically at the end of her shift and when she’d told him that she needed some time to sleep instead of taking on “extras” he’d gotten upset and took himself away with one of the other girls to keep him entertained. She wanted to leave but couldn’t until he was ready so she was left in a limbo. 

Zephyr noticed Odd walk in and when he called out for Silas she sighed. Of course he’d set up a meeting. When Odd spotted her she made her way over a smile gracing her face far too easily. “Silas is busy at the moment. Why don’t we get you sat down somewhere you can enjoy the show while you wait.” She gently placed her hand on his arm to guide him to one of the booths with a good view of the stage. “You know how things can be. He’s a busy man. You would understand that better than anyone.”

“okay, well, I’m assuming you’re going to want to take it in? Run tests on it or whatever? So who is going to pay to have it removed and then reattached so I can finish out this testing period? You? Are you paying for it or someone else that lives up in one of them higher rings? Not to mention I’m getting paid each day for testing it out and you want to look at it or whatever that’s fucking with that. You gonna cover that too? Or maybe you should actually listen to me when I say it’s not what’s causing interference because if it was it would have been causing interference on my own devices too or whatever”

“Do you just automatically play defence or am I just special?” Andromeda questioned as she listened to Thurston. “I don’t need to take it. In fact you can keep going with your testing period. I have a micro device that will take relevant information to prove or disprove my theory. Once done the device displaces itself and can be disposed of.” She held something up that looked like a patch no bigger than a thumb print. 

“I only need three days worth of data. Now. I’m being incredibly fair and doing this in a non invasive way. If I need to I can push through a seizure order which will mean it will be removed as part of an investigation. I don’t want to do that. That’s more paperwork. That means I have to talk to the security department and fuck that. My work load is big enough as it is. I would like it if you could take the patch. Let it run its course and let me prove myself right or wrong.”

“I’m sure you will too” If there was anyone who could she was certain that it would be the woman standing in front of them. Devon just hoped it would be soon. Sure she could send messages to those back on Luna Station, but messages and talking to them was different. “Yeah of course” they nodded

“There hasn’t been anything else has there?” Andi questioned. “Not... Weird things tend to happen on this ship and maybe it’s nothing but it feels like it’s getting worse. Guess I just wondered if I’m going crazy.”

Zarina narrowly avoided staring at the woman speaking to her as if she had slain a beloved pet right there and then and managed to pull herself together enough to respond. “You make several excellent points,” she said while still clutching her head, her speech completely devoid of the usual flourish and cadence that it carried. Not that the person in front of her would have any idea what she normally sounded like.

Seriously, who was this woman? Why was her brain on fucking fire? Did her mind always feel like that? Because if it did, Z was seriously questioning how she was even standing up, let alone carrying on a conversation.

“You look familiar,” she continued, which was a lie. The woman didn’t look familiar at all. But when you lied for a living, it was easy to do on the fly; it happened without Zarina even thinking about it. “Have we met?”

It was odd to watch someone go from the expression of great pain to a tone so devoid of emotion they may as well have been first generation android. Zephyr raised an eyebrow at the woman deciding it was probably best not to question it too much. Zephyr had learned asking questions wasn’t going to get her anywhere productive. 

“Oh I do?” She replied as the woman said she looked familiar. Zephyr looked at the womans face and tried to figure out if she’d seen her before. She remembered her regulars but there were hundreds of blurred faces in the work she did for Silas. If they had met Zephyr likely hadn’t been too in the moment. “Potentially. That all depends on what you like to do for fun, sugar plum.”

“You never let me have any fun,” Cass complained with an outrageous pout, but relented nonetheless and did as she was asked. It wasn’t often that she cared to follow orders, but in her experience, Andi did not mess around. And she actually did want to ask for that favour. “But fine, business it is. I need to find a fence in the lower rings who recently came into possession of some stolen tech jewellery. I have it on good authority they’re meeting with a buyer today, and while I could wander around asking the usual suspects… I’m on a bit of a time crunch, and you’re much, much faster.” Her experience also told her that flattery didn’t help, but she figured it couldn’t hurt, either.

“Fun is subjective and completely dependant on the person. This isn’t something I would consider fun.” She stated, barely glancing up. Andi paused when Cass asked what she wanted from her. It was true. She was faster than physically searching. “I’m going to need you to narrow the search parameters. Description of the item would go a long way.”

Cass laughed softly to herself, allowing herself a moment to enjoy the familiar, warm feeling that came from making someone else blush. Flirting was fun. It was innocent and a great little confidence boost that always managed to improve her mood. Being in a relationship with her job meant that she never really pursued things further, but she was always up for some witty banter with a cute person.

“Define interesting,” she retorted, leaning forward slightly to rest her head in the palm of her hand. “I recovered some stolen jewels for a lady in Ring 2. Not exactly life or death, but a good day on the job all the same. How about you? Break any hearts lately?”

Tyler laughed awkwardly when she asked if he had broken any hearts recently. “I don’t think so. Pretty sure someone has to actually like you before you can do something like that so I can firmly say I have not broken any hearts.” He knew he talked too much for some people, that he wasn’t well stationed enough for others. Sure it got kinda lonely sometimes but he couldn’t fault people for having preferences and he was happy with the way he was. 

“I was kinda hoping you would have some gossip or a new conspiracy theory. All i’ve been hearing about is the scratching in the walls.” Tyler rubbed the back of his neck, the hairs standing up like someones gaze had just passed over him. “Gets kinda crazy down here sometimes.”

“I don’t know about that. They might think it means I’m going to be easy to beat up.” He shrugged. “It still might be worth a try though.” Tyler chuckled, tapping the toe of his boot against the ground. “My vibe? I don’t know. I’m pretty all over. I like the alternative vibe for my clothes and stuff. Music is just music though. If it moves me then I vibe with it.”

Reece blinked as she mentioned someone being picky about what she should eat. They wondered who ‘he’ was. They were brought out of their thoughts about this when she thanked them. “Oh yeah - yeah of course” they grinned and nodded. “What kind of stuff do you like?” they asked, scratching the side of their head a little as they did, “there’s this old musical that’s been playing and then oh you know that old story about the people that fall in love but their families hate each other? There’s one of those playing. Apparently there’s been a lot of versions of that one.”

“Romeo and Juliet?” She asked, familiar with the premise. “It’s a classic story. Centuries old. Well... Millenia old at this point I think. I use to...” She trailed off, a frown on her face as her thought met a mental block and she was unable to get herself past it. “I... uh... It’s suppose to be a true love conquers all sort of thing. That even though their families hate each other they’re still able to find common ground and love. They both die though so it’s not a happy ending.”

Backstory:

Tyler grew up in Ring 7 with a single mother. She was always trying her hardest to make sure that despite their circumstances they didn’t have to worry about credits. See, when the decision was made to travel to the Amity Ty’s dad was listed as crew. He was an engineer specifically bio chemical, meant to help get to the bottom of the orange so they could finally settle on Mars. Then he got sick and when he passed away they no longer qualified for crew quarters. So they moved out of the nose and down to ring 7. 

Ty grew up with an understanding that nothing was permanent and so every day should be lived to its fullest. He’s not the smartest but he enjoys learning and one of his favourite things to do is learn about the space they inhabit and the earth he barely remembers. He is curious about everyone and everything and sees beauty even where others may not. His mum thinks he’s a dreamer and maybe he is but he thinks that maybe more people needed to be.

“Allowed to get?” Reece’s head tilted to the side a little, wondering why there would be some that she wouldn’t be allowed to get. “Oh yeah, my dad might know some though. I could message him and ask if you want. I know sometimes dad would just put a lot of cayenne in a broth soup. Were you thinking of seeing something?”

Zephyr waved it off like it meant nothing. “Oh he’s just picky about what I should eat. I’m sure it’ll be fine though. It would be so helpful if you could do that. Thank you.” She looked back at the digital posters for a moment. “Well I was thinking about it. I surprisingly have some spare time and no one to fill it so I thought a little self indulgence was called for. Don’t you agree?” She looked back at him. “What would you suggest in your infinite wisdom?”

Cygnus wasn’t sure if that was right but he tilted his head forward anyways. The guy had said he’d gotten them as a kid so maybe he was. “Do you live on this ring or just work here?” he asked, holding conversations had never been Cygnus’ strong suit, usually leaving that to Lyra when she’d been alive.

“I live here too. Which, yeah it’s not great. Not sure how comfortable I am living so close to the Milky Way and the Capricorn mostly because they always seem so tired and over worked but the people I’ve met who work there are all so lovely.” He chattered away not really realising that Cygnus was somewhat reluctant in his participation in the conversation.

Devon shook their head when she was asked if there was anything else that was standing out to them. “No just that. If you need to take it into investigation be my guest” they gestured to the device. “It’s not like I can get any use out of it right now.” Besides she had another one that was solely for use on the ship.

“I’m sure I’ll get to the bottom of it. It hasn’t failed you before so outside interference is high on the list of likely possibilities. If it is though, we may have a bigger problem on our hands.” Andromeda picked the device up. “So many strange things going on when it comes to sound.” She murmured. Almost too quiet for Devon to hear. “Keep me updated if you notice anything else? It could be targeted.”
