The 2025 Gender Census is now open!
[ Link to survey ]
The 12th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 30th August 2025.
It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
Tumblr media
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!
Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
If you can't wait for survey numbers, you can click here for a public spreadsheet of non-secret info with graphs as it comes in, updated manually a few times per day.
Thank you so much!

Please stop attacking the past versions of you. They were doing their best at the time and they got you here. It’s amazing how much progress you’ve made and how much you’ve grown but please don’t think your past self lacked worth in any way.

Is there any reason why your horror is wet (rain in eskew, evil river god, saltwater and hands dripping from a throat) or is it just coincidence? Or being British, i guess that could be the reason as well, given how much it rains there
When I was a small child I had a near-drowning experience (no fratricide involved, I was pottering about and fell backwards into a pond) and I'll always remember the strange comfort and eerie wonder of that moment - the world of the living becoming a small, distorted circle of golden light, surrounded by reed-tendrils and a greater darkness and incomprehensible noise rising up on all sides around me.
But on the other hand - even in your question, I think you spell out the thematic richness and complexity of water as a horror element. Rain as a soundtrack for the monotony and relentlessness of depression in Eskew. Rivers as symbolic of natural cycles, human exploitation, offerings and takings. The ocean as the embodiment of vast and uncaring cosmic horror, but also a lure for the adventurous amidst the very human desire to try and find ourselves in the unknown. Bogs and marshlands as devourers and preservers, lurking wounds of the past. Flooding as the shattering of our social and architectural boundaries. Water is reflection and abyss, lifegiver and source and ending.
Wet horror fucking rocks.

the best way i can think to describe the experience of reading moby dick is you’re in line at the dmv and this guy behind you very loudly says “well who HASN’T had a gay experience” and then proceeds to tell you every detail about his life in between anecdotes about how great sperm is and how ropes work and sometimes he’ll say the most poetic shit you’ve ever heard in your life and them jump RIGHT back into explaining how a whale is a fish because 1) it swims in water and you’re still only like halfway through the dmv line

I love what we've done with the word "ratatouille." It's kinda like how we fucked up the popular understanding of the word inception, except we borrowed a word from a language we usually copy 1:1 and assigned it a wildly unrelated meaning. Hell with the tomatoes. Steer that man by his hair.

Least and most fav smells?
Favorite smells: honeysuckle in late summer on the breeze from someone's yard, sea air in the pine trees on the southern atlantic coast when you're still miles from the actual shore, the smell of other people's dinner wafting out open doors & windows when you walk through a big city on a summer evening, the first crisp morning of autumn when you know it's going to frost later,
dry autumn leaves, campfire smoke specifically the day after when you get in the shower to wash your hair and the water reactivates the campfire smell for a brief moment, clove cigarettes someone else is smoking in the park while i walk by, the sunny air on a freezing day right before it snows, slightly musty unfinished basements,
damp forest floors covered in spruce needles, horse barns (leather & dust & sweet grain & manure), pine sap, shoe stores, the smell from someone using a wood-burning art tool, wet stone sidewalks and streets and walls when it rains in very old cities, cocoa butter, lamb stew cooking in the oven, nail polish, the processing room for cheese in a dairy goat barn,
cheap pulp book pages from the 1990s, lavender bath salts, carnation flowers, popcorn popping at community theater concession stands, coffee brewing, someone else smoking extremely stinky weed down the street, wool yarn that still smells like sheep, almond oil in anything, apple butter simmering in a cast iron pot, honey lip balms, a pint of pale ale, someone's clean laundry tumbling in the dryer coming through the vent outside on a cold day, salmon smoking, wood stoves on crisp autumn nights, baby shampoo & lotion. least favorite smell: dead fish on the shore for 3 days : / which i'm sure no one likes but it comes up in my life often.
