Everything is quiet. Everything is too quiet.

He’s not used to it – the silence. The emptiness, the nothingness. He feels undone. Like someone tipped him upside down and shook him, hard, shook every single emotion out of him and then put them back in, shoved them all back inside, but in the wrong spots. None of his emotions are in their places, he doesn’t feel right. Everything feels wrong, and unfamiliar.

The world moves in slow motion around him; everything seems to take longer than it should, like he’s underwater, wading against the current. His mind is blank; it’s hard for him to think. Function. He knows nothing, it feels like; everything he knew he has to unlearn.

All he knows is this: he is in a new place, a new flat, an empty flat. Toto isn’t here with him, Toto is back home, they don’t talk. The news leaked, the day after Christian moved out. As predicted. He’s still team principal. Red Bull guard everything very tightly. No one knows. Nothing has been confirmed. The season is about to start. Christian is set to go to Bahrain next week, for testing. He feels like he slipped on the wrong skin, someone else’s body.

These are the facts he knows. Everything else is low static in his mind, reverberating noiselessly from the empty beige walls of this flat.
