with the scarf partially obscuring their vision, the mercenary firmly remained on the fringes, taking in each and every detail of the scene before them. faces, names, movements, tributes — it was almost second nature to remain vigilant, ready to strike at the slightest sign of uncertainty. this place was still new; and as such, there was pressure to gain their footing, before they were swept up a game they were ill prepared for.
but participation in this particular event held no interest to them. ( for what god had intervened when they'd pleaded for assistance? how many turned a blind eye to their suffering? where were they?) if anything, akane deemed it an opportunity to count through how many placed their faith into something—or to be exact, someone—who could aid them in their quest for glory, wealth or whatever they blinded assumed to be granted.
plenty, she counted. plenty—except for one.
dark eyes narrowed, briefly, at the figure before her, contemplating whether a conversation was worthy of her time, her attention. a pause, then: "do you not intend to join them?" a prying question, but one posed innocently enough. here, they'd decide if they had a potential acquaintance or enemy in their wake.
open starter ; location ; thingstead, great pyre
smoke had replaced the scent of salt, a fact that aegir was not glad of, as he sat on the edge of the crowds around the great pyre — watching as wishful warriors tossed their tributes into the flames. he had not come to seek the favor of the gods — these were not the gods he prayed to, not the gods he sacrificed to. he prayed to the gods of the sea — and the god of vengeance — and his sacrifice was blood spilled.
it always sufficed.
no, he sat here for the same reason he had agreed to attend the thingstead in the first place. not for favor from the gods, or the clans, or even for a care about the next high jarl. this was for the benefit of proximity, like lambs to a slaughter. he came, and he sat, to watch. to observe. like a snake waiting in the grass, looking for the right moment to strike.

( demi-woman / she/they ) a [ sonoya mizuno ] lookalike has arrived in myrkvjord, stepping onto the deck of [ whoever pays nicely ], their reputation either preceding them or waiting to be made. [ akane “the fury” horikawa ] has survived [ thirty eight ] years, and their name is already whispered in ports, feared by traders, or cursed by the clans. Some call them [ brutal ], others say they are [ observant ], but one thing is certain—their fate is bound to the sea. With their influence growing, they are set to either rule the waves or sink beneath them. You might know them as a [ wandering mercenary ], but soon enough, they will be remembered as more.

“She herself is a haunted house. She does not possess herself; her ancestors sometimes come and peer out of the windows of her eyes and that is very frightening. She has the mysterious solitude of ambiguous states; she hovers in a no-man’s land between life and death, sleeping and waking.”
— Angela Carter, The Lady of the House of Love (The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories)
