Kirk Hammett: The Collection LIVE in Toronto 25.04.25
- The beginning of collecting guitars - Read Part 1 here
MARK
Shall we talk about guitars now? Everybody ready to start the guitar discussion? If you have not seen the episode of the show, Kirk and I talk for about an hour and a half as well, and some of the stuff we may have gone over in the show, but a couple things I want to ask you again. Obviously this guitar will be the first one we start with, the 1979 Flying V, obviously pretty important to the early part of Metallica. But before we get to this guitar, let's just talk about collecting. Because we know you had this. When did the collecting part of your life start? What album cycle was it? Do you remember, was it a city, a time, a moment you thought “Oh shit, here we go. I got some money and I want to buy some guitars.”
KIRK
I like that question, that’s a really, really great question. Alright, ok so, I’d say the one pivotal moment (laughs) was somewhere on the “…And Justice For All” Tour and we were in Milwaukee. There used to be this guy, had this place called Pete’s Guitars and this was pete. Pete was a really, really great guitar guy. He was good friends with Clapton and Beck, they would come to him to buy guitars. And I remember Jason, James and I, we went there, it was really cold, winter time. Pete opened up his warehouse to us and we were just pulling cases off the racks and opening them up, seeing what was inside. I got a lot of guitars at that time, I got 8 guitars. I think James got something like 12 guitars, Jason bought like, a ridiculous amount of guitars…
MARK
But what are you buying? Was there already stuff on a list that you're like, Oh, I'm never gonna see this. Or were you testing the waters at this point…
KIRK
I was just testing the waters because it was all kind of new and I didn't really know what I wanted. But I knew I liked Flying V’s, but there were no Flying V’s there, and I knew I liked old strats and there was like a couple of old strats that I ended up getting. I remember getting a couple of acoustic guitars. I got that ES-295, that gold one…
MARK
It’s on The Black Album right?

KIRK
Yea, yea, yea. Which I love, I love those ES-295’s, really, really great. And a lot of the guitars that I did get I ended up trading away, trading up for other guitars, which is something I just learned from collecting comic books. And so, that initial excursion into Pete’s was pretty cool.

Kirk Hammett: The Collection LIVE in Toronto 25.04.25
- Hawaii and Ross Halfin's photography -
KIRK
…We have a really, really great friendship and really great working relationship. And I’m a big fan of (Ross’s) photography. And usually when we’re working together I'll see a lot of his shots, and I'll look and I'll say to him, dang Ross, it looks like you're actually improving, you know, and he is, he's getting better in his craft. It's crazy.
MARK AGNESI
Well, one of the other things that's pretty noticeable about the book, it kind of has this Hawaiian theme. You guys shot all throughout Hawaii. Tell me about why you wanted that to be the backdrop for all these guitars to kind of get photographed in?
KIRK
Well it’s because Hawaii is so dynamic. The sky is always changing, the ocean is always changing. We basically went to the same spot. And every time we went there the picture, the lighting, the feel, how the light was being filtered through the clouds if there were clouds, all created different scenarios for a lot of these shots. And it is really great, really convenient because that spot was literally like a 5 minute walk from my place in Hawaii. So, I mean, we just kind of like, you know, we just walk to that place, and the vehicle would meet us there and we just do what we had to do, usually around sunset. Sometimes we’d have to wake up at dawn which was really kind of crazy, very uncomfortable. It was great because we got a lot of mileage out of that one particular spot. We travelled all over Hawaii only because of the great scenery and how scenic it is. But I also know Ross is a really, really great landscape photographer. I mean, I don't know if you guys know this, but he's put out numerous books on just his really wide panoramic shots of landscapes. And I knew that, so I tried to exploit that a little bit, that aspect of his photography and I looked for places that had really big pitch, and Hawaii just has a lot of those types of places. And also, I have to admit, I mean, I love where I live. So, It’s kind of like a love letter to Hawaii, where I live, where I like to go and surf and hang out.

Metallica performing live at Solnahallen Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
September 26, 1986 during the Damage Inc. tour.
This was Cliff's last show with the band and James' first show back on guitar since breaking his hand in July.
James Hetfield:
"We hit the stage, and I just really went for it. I'd wanted to play [guitar] again so badly. We're meant to play aggressive and fast and hard, and so it was good to be able to do that again, you know? To be firing on all cylinders. We played faster that night, for sure. There was such a powerful vibe in that place, just this amazing energy. Not just from me, but everyone. The band. The fans. The crew. We were at full strength again, like, 'Everything's going to be okay.' You know, just 'Full steam ahead.'
I remember after the gig, someone asked Cliff, 'What's Metallica's goal?' He said, 'World domination and self-destruction!' I thought, 'Wow, is that something he's just saying because it sounds cool, or is he serious?' I mean, we wanted to be a household name. We wanted to be out there playing and reaching everyone on the planet with our music."
Kirk Hammett:
"We'd been frightened that James might not ever be able to play guitar again. And so for him to take his cast off and play so well—we were very, very happy. We were very relieved. I looked at James with his white Flying V and thought, 'Right on man: another obstacle we've overcome.' There'd been a lot of obstacles in our career, and so the feeling was great. We were ecstatic.
We were hanging outside the venue after the show—just hanging with the fans, signing autographs. Eventually we had to leave, but the fans didn't want us to. I remember all four of us getting on the bus and looking out at the kids. They were swarming all over the place and jumping up to look into the [bus] windows. A few of them started goofing off and walking funny. Cliff said, 'Look at them. They're acting like zombies. Our crowd's a bunch of fucking zombies! I love it!' That's exactly what he said as the bus pulled away."
Jörgen Björk (a fan from Anneberg, Sweden who attended the concert):
"James was cheering with the audience; he was drinking beer and pouring it on the front row. He looked so happy—they all did. The reaction from the crowd was astounding."
Eliel Hast (a fan from Kalmar, Sweden who attended the concert):
"'Blitzkrieg' was the last song—the last encore. The band stayed onstage for five minutes when it ended, thanking the crowd."
Hjalmar Walin (a fan from Sundbyberg, Sweden who attended the concert):
"As the band left the stage, Cliff went up to the mic and yelled, 'You guys are great!' He raised his fist and the entire place went crazy."
