I would like to make a formal apology to the magpie that was eating this before I inadvertently scared it off. Beautiful spine

Some less than fortunate birds from our recent road trip!
The first two are the same chick, the third and fourth pics are separate chicks - there were three we found in total. According o my godmother there had been a nest in their cottage’s gutter, and they’d seen the parents about and heard cheeping. We suspect a strong gust of wind probably emptied the nest all at once.
Fifth pic is a… thrush of some kind. It’s not a great pic but the lighting was low and there were a metric fuckton odd mosquitoes per cubic inch so I didn’t linger. Nabbed the skull though.
Sixth pic is a young magpie, ironically about half a meter outside an old graveyard’s wall.

9.6.2024
Hedgehog and pigeon, on the opposite sides of the same building. The hedgehog is obviously roadkill, the pigeon just eaten. There were feathers scattered nearby.

Headless pigeon on the street. Grandma says it’s been there for at least 2 days.

22.9.2022
Fieldfare. Found while taking a wee “shortcut” through some backyards. I think it’s interesting how the feathers are all over the place, like they’ve come completely loose from the skin and flesh, all the little muscles pulling them in place just… not. Might have to check if it’s still there in a few days, see how it’s doing.

23.9.2022 Two weeks’ difference! Forgot to post the first pic at the time, as you do, and passed by today. Love the progress of decomposition and how the body has sagged.

Mom: ”We’ve got a little corpsie in here!” Found in our yard. A mouse of some sort, can’t be bothered to check.

25.8.2022 Lesser whitethroat, found while going to work this morning. Looks like it might’ve flown into a window, seeing as it was right by the wall of the building.

16.8.2022 Female sparrow, documented by my mom. Hit by something? The bloody stuff looks like raspberry jam…

13.8.2022 Eurasian oystercatcher wings, probably. Not 100% sure but the location was near the sea, so.

Uhh. A squirrel. Yeah. Probably killed by traffic, and then probably eaten by something. There was a bunch of crows around. The forelegs… are there, but they’re all turned around and… peeled. Head’s just gone.

14.7.2022 pretty sure this is the culprit. Handsome cat, very friendly and intent on getting at our breakfast. I do worry whose cat this is.

13.7.2022
Squirrel. We’re on a little trip and rented a small cabin for one night and this was under a juniper by the porch. I wonder what ate it, not sure what predators this area has.

Oh yeah! While I’m at it. Saw this a week ago, on 2.7.2022. Poor baby, it’s that time of the year again when the clueless baby birds are about. Tit of some kind, I’m thinking blue tit but could be a great tit too. Not quite an expert on two-dimensional baby birds here, but definitely a tit.
But yes, very small and very flat bird. I saw a slightly older very much alive blue tit baby the other day, sitting in the middle of a cycle path. Literally would not move, even when I gently nudged it with my foot. It didn’t register any passing bikes as a threat, it seemed that anything passing by was a potential parent returning with food for that thing. So I can totally see how easily lone baby birds can get pancaked. I moved it out of the road, just a little bit to the side, didn’t touch it with my hands. I hope it’s fine, but I’m also pretty sure chicks that young shouldn’t be out of the nest, so.
