so the service we're decommissioning at work is our legacy email service, where most of our users are people who got a free email with their dial up in the 90s from a company we later acquired with a generic domain name (back when 'free email with your dial up!' was a big incentive, because email services were often chargeable) and it just. never went away. and now we have to decomission it because a) it loses us money even charging people over £10 a month who wouldn't leave and b) it's genuinely now so insecure it is a major security issue. like truly, we should have done this two years ago because the level of insecurity is genuinely inexcusable. it is Not Safe to use.
what we have discovered is. a shocking amount of people using this service still are using it professionally. they got 10 emails they use for their actual genuine over-fifty-employees business instead of getting a commercial solution, or they're longterm self employed with a business where they're using the equivalent of an '[email protected]' address from their ISP. and so now people are like. but i have five thousand contacts and rely on this for work and it can't be transferred, what do i do. and i'm not unsympathetic- the idea of a whole-ass email provider fully sunsetting their service is for most people unheard of in a post-gmail world, this is not a common issue to have and it sucks! i am trying to help all these people because god, it's such a shitty situation and hard to resolve.
but also. please. on my hands and knees. i am begging you. if you are self employed, buy a domain and get a custom email address. this is foolproof. if a company goes under you can set the same email up with zero issue with any and every email provider. i don't care if you're a one man band. i don't care if you think 'google will never go under'. zero exceptions. if you rely wholly on your email for work purposes, you HAVE to find a cheap domain, register it, and pay the cost to have an email with a custom domain. because the alternative is 'oh god every client i've ever had only has the email that is unexpectedly going defunct and i am going to lose work because of it'. it is a business expense and no business is too small to justify it. if your work email is for work, you gotta fucking do it. please. please. so many people have been using an email from the 90s from a long defunct ISP intended for personal use for their entire business on the assumption that it's not possible for an email to just... stop working, and it is KILLING ME. idc if you're 'just' someone doing full time freelance work or whatever. buy a fucking domain so you don't lose it. this has been standard advice since the 90s, and i know because my parents had one for that exact reason in the 90s, and it saves so much fucking hassle.
relatedly, a lot of people have said they're going to sue us because they genuinely think it's illegal to stop providing email addresses. needless to say. It Is Not. but if you own a domain, you can move the fucking email if you need to. every day i am shocked at how badly the way domains and email addresses are understood by people who stake their entire businesses on having them, ngl.

I love seeing list memes where someone makes a "le cool people vs le cringe" and they obviously skew it so they barely scrape by into the cool kids club
