that smile could, and will, haunt her for days. so unnatural; so inhuman. she's still screaming, she knows she is -- though the words are mush to her brain, the inflection of their panicked attempts at comfort still registered in her, otherwise static-filled, brain. her eyes dart around the room, the blurring of her vision and their distorted voices not helping much in the grounding department.

that was, of course, until her eyes found shepherd, who was standing a few feet behind her father and mina. her face scrunches as another pained sob escapes and she pleads for it to stop. shepherd is real. she knows he's real because she can tell that he's in tune with her mind; his face says it all. it makes her sick. not even jiji can help her out of this.

shepherd's arms are around her as quickly as she blinks tears from her eyes. it feels like whiplash the way her mind instantly calms and she falls limp into shepherd's lap, the silence in her mind providing such relief that her body practically shut down once the adrenaline had passed. vera shudders, grabs tightly onto pogo ( a cow covered in patches. a cow that belonged to mickey.. ) she's still shaking like a leaf when she comes to, looks up to see shepherd looking down at her and all vera can do is curl into a ball.

listen. i want to tell ye that i have infinite reasons for making this. that i've been designing this for weeks, months even. but i can't. this happened because i saw one (1) meme and aligned that with two (2) cups of coffee. either way besties, you're all getting a strangely detailed list of reasons to drop your muse into another muse's lap. you wanna switch the roles? add a [ REVERSE ] if you want your muse to be the lap that's being sat in! don't add to this list, don't claim it as your own, i'll curse all your potatoes to be soapy and sad to consume.

he was back. the man she had grown to admire as a father, who saved her life, was back after leaving without a trace. no note. no warning. her mind had just barely begun to process his absence, and now it had to readjust. she grieved enough for two lifetimes it seems. that day he made his return, she had no more tears left to cry when the man dropped to his knees in front of her and mina, begging for forgiveness. it was a new kind of numbness that had overtaken her body and mind. she felt like a deer in the headlights in their last moments before the fatal collision.

the voice makes her jump nearly out of her skin and her nails dig painfully into the kitchen table for grounding. two years, she answers to herself as her body relaxes back into the chair. vera doesn't make eye contact with the man as he moves about the kitchen looking for... something. or maybe he's avoiding her gaze as well. how stubborn of them. vera adjusts in her seat, grabbing the spoon beside her and slowly, hesitantly, stirring the bit of cereal that had gone untouched ( they were the poor souls that had became too soggy ).

" i sleep... " a lie she didn't even attempt to play up. vera can sense the slight eyebrow raise from him and, for the first time in a while, it almost makes her smile a little. almost. " why are you asking me that? look in a mirror. "

to be painfully honest, had anyone else given her a flower she would have tossed it aside the first chance she got. it wasn't that she didn't appreciate the gesture but, rather, the fact she was too lazy to find a vase to put it. ( she was "too lazy" for a lot of things lately. ) but with the small bouquet of assorted tulips being so excitedly held out to her vera feels her stomach twisting in knots and sweat begin to bead around her forehead. she swallows a lump in her throat and slowly takes the flowers in her hand, holds them close to her chest and nods.
