Uniforms Have Significance
When it comes to choosing a topic that has meaning to me, my topic for this blog post is that of how has the culture of the military been shaped and portrayed through the evolution of its uniform? I chose this topic, because it is what I am aspiring for my career to be within the next few years. The other reason I chose this topic was because of how I have grown up with the military just being a big part of my life. Whether it be looking at my relatives who have been involved with the military or simply having this big goal of wanting to outrank my dad with being in the military.
The last reason I chose this topic was because I feel just so knowledgeable, and that I am able to comfortably talk about this topic, without worrying that I will not have enough to say. When looking at this topic it is important to understand how the military has so much significance to so many other people than myself. The uniform is a symbol of the military and that is something that a lot of people can recognize.
The overall purpose of my blog post is to help people understand the significance of the military uniform. The significance of the uniform plays a huge and major role into how not just the military views themselves, but also how the rest of society looks at the military. The military uniform, more specifically the Army boots have significance to what the culture of the military has become through the history, impact on the people, and how things have changed.

Boots Have a Childhood
Ever since I was little I always remember looking up to my father. More specifically looking up to the heroism, courage, and bravery that my father has to be able to leave for periods of time, because the Army dragged him away for deployment. I remember the feeling of when my father would come back from deployment, and my dad encouraging me to run a mile for BoyScout of America. I remember how my mother would wait for my father to return from work every night. My father has been the image of a man who has a good work life balance when it comes to being in the Army and taking care of those of us in his family.
My dad is the person I wanna be like when it comes to being a successful soldier and a mom one day. I remember how excited I was when I chose to go into the Army and do 20 years of active duty like my dad. I especially remember back in August the honor and pleasure it was when my father gave me his Army boots that he wore.
“Carey, come here I have something for you.” My father exclaimed. “Coming, what is it?” I replied. “I don’t know if you want these, but here are my boots.” My father said, I do not ever remember another time in my life, when I was given such an influential gift from someone. The boots from my dad heavily inspired me at that moment. It changed how I thought about myself, and why I am deciding to do what I want to do.

History, O History
Like all other aspects of life, and those events that are important the military is going to have a history with its uniform. “Military footwear can be traced back over thousands of years, even as far back as the Roman Empire, and just like humans, the combat boot has evolved through generations of change and adaptation. Arguably one of the most important pieces of equipment or gear anyone in a combat situation may possess, the combat boot has come a long way from its humble beginnings” ("US"). This relates back to my overall topic in that it gives a little bit of the background of a specific part of the uniform. That part being the boots, as it relates to my cultural object.
Tumblr media
This piece of evidence also shows where the military was in regards to the uniform, and how it has grown a little bit since that time. “The U.S. Army military uniform has become an iconic standard for professional militaries, but the military uniforms for sale today have come a long way from their 18th century British Army roots. Learning how military uniforms have changed over time is a great way to see how American identity formed and distinguished itself over the relatively short time the country has been around" ("Change"). This piece of evidence shows the more general change of the uniform, rather than just one specific part. It shows the significance over time, and the symbolism that comes with that. In the end the uniform has more significance within its history than originally thought of.

Thoughts? Opinions?
As the military has grown and changed we can see how something as small as the uniform impacts the whole situation. The uniform has shown significance throughout time, rather than just affecting one particular moment in time. “This essay examines early twentieth-century German representations of men and women in uniform to consider how mass culture allowed individuals to participate in aspects of gender construction. It also reveals how masculinity was increasingly linked to military ideals. The pictures under scrutiny here were made in two significant but as yet under-researched types of pictures: pre-avant-garde photomontage soldier portraits and popular postcards” ("Abstract").
This relates to the main thesis in that it shows how the difference has changed. It also shows how the symbolism of the uniform affects more than just the United States and that the symbolism is more relevant in the culture of the military. “Moral dimension of military uniform is derived both from its practical and its symbolic function - its practical function is to precisely separate combatants from non-combatants, while its symbolic function reflects collective identity, norms and values of military profession" (Stanar 1).

This shows the symbolism of the uniform in that there is more to the representation than just a societal meaning. Also that symbolism stands in more ways than one. The impact of what the uniform stands for is shown both earlier, later, and physically. We can also see the symbolism of the uniform through objects, and that the impact is shown through other meanings, rather than just a single meaning. It also all comes down to how people take it.

Look at the People
Like all things in the military, events that take place in the military will always fall back to the civilians. With the evolution of the military it shows how this part is affecting more than one group in regards to significance. “Combat boots, initially produced for military use, are now a part of our popular culture. Young teenagers to thirty-year-old adults wear combat boots as a natural part of their wardrobe. Doc Martens, the most popular style of combat boots, resemble designer jeans by coming in all sizes and colors, from the high-top boot to the cut-off version. The owner can dress combat boots up with jeans and a white, long-sleeve shirt, or wear them with a T-shirt and a pair of ripped jeans. Society popularizes jeans because of their western connotation, so the owner can feel as rough and tough as a cowboy when he or she wears a pair of jeans.
Likewise, some consumers wear combat boots to feel as tough as military personnel” ("Combat"). This relates back to the evolution of the military in that the symbolism of the military uniform is deeper than just a piece of clothing. It shows the evolution through the impact of the people, civilian people, not just people of service. “The members were too furious to listen let alone address the concerns of The Group Commander. All the members wanted to do was hoot, boo, hiss, and vent their anger.
Tumblr media
They repeated claims that they did not want to imitate USAF officers by wearing a USAF officer's uniform, and were only interested in the mission. One CPT (Captain) toward the end of the meeting sprung up and exclaimed that he was quitting because he was tired of people saying "CAP ain't ****! I'm not a ****ing boy scout. I'm a CAP officer. **** it, I deserve respect! I don't need this ****!" (Cheng 1).
This piece of evidence shows another aspect of how the uniform has impacted the military through the people. It shows once again how the symbolism goes deeper, and how important the symbolism has changed. In summary the military used to be exclusive, but now it relates to everyone. The next time you look around a group of people, see the symbolism that surrounds you.

Goodbye, but not too often
The military uniform has had a huge impact on the military culturally and socially. The impact relates to the people more than service men, history of the uniform, and how things have changed. In the end the impact of one cultural object, such as the boots can mean so much more to a person, than another person may openly realize. When it comes to being a part of the audience that is impacted, let us take a look, and ask ourselves, “Is there more impact to these boots than what I am seeing?”
