This is my advert which I created on iMovie. Once starting to put the videos together I did have to slightly change my plan from my original storyboard. This was because I couldn't figure out how to do certain things on iMovie. I still really like how it turned out though. I chose the music that I did because I felt like it gave of the most 1920s vibes. I. attempted to make the start of the advert sound either like a radio turning on or possibly a vinyl player.

Design Boards
Initial ideas
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before fully committing to my design board layouts and sticking them down I experiment with some different versions. From the start I had a few ideas of how I wanted them to look. For example I knew I wanted to incorporate larger illustrations of the faces of my models. Originally I wasn’t too sure how to do this as I didn’t want it to take too much away from my designs. I experimented with using different wallpaper samples as-well to add more texture. I really liked the blue one that I chose because it remind me a lot of denim which was one of the trends I tried to incorporate into my collection.
Design Board 1
Tumblr media
This is my first design board. I put these illustrations together because they are all made up of very similar colours. When drawing the face for the background of this board I decided to make the hair red because it is the complementary colour of green therefore making the designs more eye catching. I used pro markers to colour the face.
Design Board 2
Tumblr media
I really like this design board because I think the variety of different colours make it very fun and playful. I also think the designs go well together because they are all more on the unique side. In the background I used photos from my 1920s mood-boards as-well as another pro marker face illustration.
Design Board 3
Tumblr media
This is my final design board. Although I still like this board I do think it is more simple than the other two. However i do still like it because all 4 designs have a pink and purple colour scheme which makes the whole board pop and look more funky. I once again used a face illustration and wallpaper to decorate the background. I wish that I had added another 1920s photo to the left side of the board to fill in the gap.

Press Release
Tumblr media
This is my final press release design. I wanted to incorporate different features of my collection such as designs and inspiration. I also wanted my press release to look similar to my design boards. To do this I used the same wallpaper samples in the background and included some more photos from my moodboards. I also decided to add another illustration. I’m really happy with how it turned out as it helps add more colour to the board. I used one of my designs that didn’t make it into the final 12 just so that it wasn’t too repetitive. The media I used was watercolour as I wanted it to be softer and more pastel and that can be difficult to achieve with pro markers.
Tumblr media
The Name
I decided to name my collection The Bees Knees because it is a term that originated in the 1920’s which refers to something outstandingly good

I used pro markers for my first version of this design. I once again used a monochromatic colour scheme. I really focused and took my time on blending on the blazer because i wanted it to look smooth.
For the watercolour version I decided to use blue instead of green because I wasn’t too sure weather I liked the green or not. I do quite like the blue but I couldn’t manage to get the watercolours to be as detailed as I wanted it to be. I really like how I added the into the hair though as well.
Tumblr media
For the first version of this design I used coloured pencils. I tried to incorporate all of the main colours in my collections colour scheme (pink, purple, blue and green). In my opinion this design has quite a tropical vibe so I think the bright colours help to enhance that. I focused on making gradients in the different sections of the dress to add more interest.
For the other one I used gouache. I ended up using colour pencils to try add more detail however I think I could’ve added more as it is quite simple. I also switched up the colour scheme and eliminated the green as I have used it a lot throughout my collection.
Tumblr media
I found it quiet difficult to think of ways to add media to this design without making it too simple. I used multiple media’s for both of these such as watercolour, gouache and coloured pencil.
For the pink one I stared with a wash of water colour which I then added more details and shadows to with coloured pencil. This was also pretty much what I did for the second version but instead of watercolour I used gouache.
Both design have a denim corset. I made this effect by layering different coloured blue pencils.
Tumblr media
The first version of this design is a mixture of collage and coloured pencil. I really wanted to use the packaging which is the skirt because I think the pattern and colour scheme is really nice. I let this inspire the rest of the design.
The second time I added media to this design I used watercolours. I used green and purple because after using it on one of my other designs I realised how well they went together. I love how I managed to make the shorts look textured. Because I made majority of the garment the same colour I focused on making the shadows more noticeable and contrasting.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the first version I used pro markers. I got the colour palette from the package of a game of checkers from the 1920s. I like how the yellow bad green look together and I feel like I wouldn’t usually have picked that colour combination. After using pro markers though I wasn’t too happy with the shade of yellow as it was too bright. So I went over it with a white coloured pencil to make it more pastel.
For the second one I used gouache paint. I really like how this one turned out because it is simple but effective. I changed to yellow to a blue just to see if it would look any better. And I do think I prefer the blue. However I didn’t pick it for my final collection because I prefer go the media I used on the first version looks. I did also use coloured pencil on top of the gouache just to help enhance the details.
Tumblr media
Originally I wanted each circle to be a different colour and all the colours to be scattered randomly throughout the dress. However when I started using the water colour I found that it would look more elegant if I did more of a gradient down the dress. I wanted the watercolour to run more freely so I firstly covered the design in just water before blobbing the watercolour on top of that.
For the second version I decided to do a college to help me achieve something similar to my original idea. However I decided to go with a monochrome colour scheme. I love how all the different textures look together as I used some shiny and some plain papers. I also added some details with a blue posca pen.
Tumblr media
I wanted to experiment with using shiny silver foil and I thought this would be the perfect design for it as it is the most fun one. I kept the design quiet simple by just adding one colour to make the silver standout. My favourite part is the shoes.
I then decided that I wanted to experiment with inks. I only own two different coloured inks so my colour palette was very limited. However I still made it work. However I do think this version is a bit too simple for my liking. I did end up using some watercolour to make the skin colour more natural instead of vibrant pink.
Tumblr media
I was very excited to add media to this design because I knew that I wanted to use my new shiny watercolours. I wasn’t expecting much from them but they actually worked very well. I used them around to emphasise details on the skirt. I really wanted to see how much detail I could create with just using watercolours and no pencils. And I think it went quite well as I managed to create a texture on the skirt.
The second version of this design is done with pro markers. I love using pro markers but it is sometimes hard because it limits your colour options. I used a more funky colour scheme of purple and green. I tried to blend the markers by continuously layering the darker and lighter shades over each other.

For the first time I added media to this design I used coloured pencils. I really like how it turned out because I focused on layering the colours feather than just using one main colour which made it more effective. I tried to make parts of the dress and shoes look like denim. I did this by using multiple shades of blue.
For the second one I used gouache paint which is basically more opaque watercolour. I haven’t used gouache that much so I am still learning the proper techniques. I decided to make the denim black to see how it looked. However I think it makes it harder to tell what it is meant to be compared to the blue version.
Tumblr media
This design ended up being one of my favourites after adding media.
When starting the first version I didn’t have many ideas. However I found a roll of these stick on rose petals which I thought would be quite interesting to incorporate into a collage. I am very happy that I found them because It is the perfect way to incorporate the trend of roses into my collection. I also used watercolours on this illustration because I felt as though it would look weird if used college on the face.
For the second design I wanted to try a completely different colour combination because the pink was very bright. I used coloured pencils and tried to emphasise the shadows and highlights.
I really like both versions of this design and found it quiet hard to pick the final design.
Tumblr media
For the first version of this design I used pro markers. I love the colour combination that I created for this design as it is very bright and also it is monochromatic.
Because I like the colours so much I used the same on the second version. However h the us time I used watercolours. I really wanted to be more experimental with this one so I left the colours go wherever on the garment. I think the effect this made looks very cool and sort of like tie dye. I also added some swirls to add more detail.
Tumblr media
Once again with this design I was already set on the colour palette which I wanted to use. I used both watercolours and pastels. After completing the watercolour version I knew taht would be the one to be on my final design boards because I loved it so much. Therefore I used the second one to experiment more. I decided to use pastels because I wouldn’t normal chose them. I really like how the colours are very bright. I attempted to blend and add shadows but it isn’t very noticeable and I struggled a bit when it came to adding extra detail.

Theme Moodboard
Tumblr media
I created this Moodboard to capture the theme and vibe of my collection “The bees Knees”. To do this I looked at different aspects of the collection such as fabrics, colour scheme and inspiration. Along with this I also wanted to include the illustrators that I researched. I ended up using one of Henry Dales pieces because I feel as though his work is the most similar to the style that I used when design my collection. I also added keywords around the board to help give more context and make it more interesting.

This website shows photographs from Susan Fangs ss24 runway show. I really liked looking at her collection because in my opinion it is very beautiful and dainty. I also love the colour palette she used. Although I used Susan Fangs work as an example for ruffles some of the garments from this collection are also examples of the trend sheer fabric.

I created a Pinterest board of fashion illustrators that I liked. I tried to find illustrators that wear more unique and creative whilst also having a variation of different media’s and techniques. I think having this Pinterest bird will be very helpful for during future unit projects when I need more inspiration. However for this unit I decided to take inspiration from Henry Dale, Angel Chen, Claudia Wimmer, Petra Dufkova, Kirsten Ulve and Lara Wolf’s work.

Designs based off 1920s Transport
Tumblr media
This is one of my favourite designs as I think it is really fun and it reminds me of 2000’s style fashion. I took inspiration from car interiors specially the cushioned seats. When you look at cars from the 1920s you can see that the seating is different to now as they are more cushioned and have lines going down them. I wanted o incorporate this so I made a similar pattern on the top of the garment. I also made the skirt layered to incorporate the trend of ruffles. The belt and necklace is taken from the shape of the cars headlights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This design is inspired by the car wheels. I thought the spokes would work well as a sort of sheer fabric so I made them cross over the top half of the garment. I wanted this design to look sleek and Morden as that’s how I think the cars from the 1920s looked. I decided to make the garment knee length because that was very popular during the roaring 20’s.
Tumblr media
This design is also based off the wheels. I really like the concept of the using the spokes so I did it again however this time I used them to connect the garment together. The shaping of the garment is inspired by the tires. Personally I’m not a big fan of this design however I think that if I had experimented with the idea more I could have made it better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love this design as it is very sophisticated and Morden. I got the patterns from designs on the car for example the circles along the hem are from the headlights. I also included the trend of blazers.
Tumblr media
This design is inspired by tires and the pattern tires make on the floor. I decided to do a shorter skirt to create more of a variety for my collection. The details across the stomach are taken from the metal bars on the front of the car.

Designs based of 1920s entertainment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This design is based off of the game checkers. Checkers was a very popular game in the 1920s. I took inspiration from the checkered board and used the squares to make cut outs in the dress. I thought this would be a fun way to make the garment more unique. I also was inspired by the game pieces which have lots of lines and ridges on them. I used this aspect to decorate the waist and neck.
Tumblr media
I love this design as it is very glamorous. It is inspired by a marble. I think marbles are very pretty especially the patterns on the inside so I wanted to include that. I tried to replicate the swirls and made that the main focus of the garment. Although it is quiet simple i think it looks very luxurious.
Tumblr media
This design is based off of dominoes and is one of my more unique designs. The main dress is meant to be like a dominoes piece. I the. Wanted to include one of my ss24 trends so I chose blazers. I did this because I feel like dominoes gives of quiet a powerful and strong vibe compared to other 1920s games like marbles. Therefore I made the main focus of the garment a big blazer sort of dress that in my opinion adds a more masculine feel to the design.
Tumblr media
This is another one of my favourite designs and it is inspired by the classic game tiddlywinks. This design looks very opulent in my opinion. I wanted to make the dress fully out of the small circles to represent the game pieces. However one I started I realised that would be quite boring and plain so I added a bigger circle on the waist to add more interest. As well as this I added tulle on the shoulders and at the bottom of the dress to make it look more elegant.
Tumblr media
This design was also based off of checkers. However this time I decided to mainly focus on the game pieces. Because they are round I thought it would make the perfect shape for a skirt so I layered them. This also incorporates in the trend of ruffles. I also added a collar as I think it makes the designs look more sophisticated.

Designs based off 1920s sports.
Tumblr media
This outfit was inspired by horse riding and racing which was a very popular sport and source of entertainment in the 20’s. I started off by looking at what they used to wear when horse riding which was cropped trousers. I then wanted to included aspects of the horse because I thought that would make the design more interesting. So for the top I made it based off of the shape of a horses foot with the hooves covering the chest and the ankles connecting the outfit together. Then to finish it I copied the shape of a saddle to create big shoulders. I really like this design because I think it is quite androgynous and powerful. I also like how I was able to create a modern twist on what jockey’s used to wear in the past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this design is my favourite and it is also inspired by horse racing. I like how it is quite grungy it reminds me of a Vivienne Westwood piece. I made the dress shape based off of the horse head I think you can tell if you look carefully how the ears are at the shoulders and the nose at the bottom of the dress. Then to add details I added parts of old reins and other horse riding equipment to make a sort of chain. Once again I love how I have kind of made this design feminine but also quite edgy and powerful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This design is inspired by a tennis racket from the 1920’s which I found on eBay. I decided to include the trend from ss24 of sheer fabrics. I thought this would work well as I could use it to represent the wires that go across the racket. The sleeve is taken from the shape of the top of the tennis racket and I made the skirt long and rectangular so it was similar to the rackets handle. The tennis racket also had stripes across it so I used that to add more interest to the design.
Tumblr media
This design was inspired by boxing which was a very popular event in the 1920s. I also love this design because I feel like it is very dainty and feminine even though the sport it is inspired by is very rough and violent. Once again I took inspiration from Waht boxers used to wear which was simply just shorts. I didn’t think I had much to work off but I made the shorts more elegant and decided to use the belt as a sort of ribbon as if it was tied in a bow at the back. I then went on to look at boxing gloves. The main thing that stood out to me was the way they were tied at the bottom it kind of reminded me of a corset so I added it up the front of the top and down the legs. What I also like about this is how I took a sport that back in the 1920s wasseen very much as a male only sport due to its aggressive nature and made it very feminine and elegant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another popular sport was baseball so I took inspiration from that. I wanted this dress to be quite elaborate and elegant and I think I succeeded in that. I used the shape of the ball to create the silhouette for example the shoulders are circular and I made the hips very round. I then used the stitch on the ball to add details to the dress. This also prompted the idea of adding a corset as the stitching reminded me of the lace up on a corset. I also used patterns off the hall to make it more interesting. The main pattern was these circles that surrounded the logo on the ball which you can see I added to the skirt. My idea for this to include a ss24 trend was to make the corset out of denim but I’m not sure now if that would look good or bad.

Designs based off 1920s furniture and architecture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this design I took inspiration off a building from the 1920s. It was a tall skyscraper type of building that was made up of lots of triangles. Because of this I decided to construct the top out of triangles. I wanted this design to be quite powerful and strong to help further represent the building. However I thought it would be a good contrast to make the bottom half of the dress more elegant therefore I added a floaty skirt. The idea was to make the skirt stripy to look similar to office wear because I think that would fit with the vibe of the dress and the building. I feel like the combination of the rounded skirt and the sharp too helps to make the dress look quite luxurious just like the building in which I was inspired by.
Tumblr media
This design was inspired by a clock which I found inside one of the books from the library. When I started this design I did struggle to come up with an idea because the shape of the clock was so unique. The main thing that stood out to me was this pattern that was inside the clock therefore I used it to decorate the bottom and top of the skirt. I wanted to make the skirt quite square shaped because the clock was made up of different rectangles. Once I had the basic outfit design I decided to add extra details that I could see on the clock to make it more interesting for example the clock hands on the top. I really like this design because I think it is very elegant but also unique.
Tumblr media
This design was also inspired by the same building as the first design I did. However I got the shape from a 1920s vase as I thought it would be quite interesting. I then just create patterns using the different shapes from the building for example the triangles and stripes. When I finished this design I thought it was a bit boring so I decided to add some tulle down the back of the skirt. I think this helps to make the outfit more fitting to my customer because it looks more fancy and complete.
Tumblr media
This design was inspired by a 1920s chair. I really wanted to do something different for this design as all my previous ones had been quite fitted. Therefore I focused more on the cushions and padding of the chair which is how I came up the silhouette as I wanted it to show the padding and the shape of it. To add more details I replicated some of the designs that were carved into the wooden chair legs and added the stitching that ran across the chair cushions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of my favourite designs from the furniture and architecture moodboard. I took inspiration from this 1920s mirror that I found on Pinterest. The mirror was in a wooden frame that was very detailed. Therefore I used these details and swirls to construct the garments shape. I think this went really well because it created a very unique dress that also looks very fashionable and expensive.
