Costumes from the Classics Exhibition + Competition
The private viewing for the exhibition at Cannon Hall has just taken place where all our garments were on display in the ballroom, After being assessed by Cosprop previously they announced the 3rd 2nd and 1st place winners and whose garments would be on display for the entire exhibition.
I was fortunate enough to win the competition in which I am very happy about and so excited for my garment to be apart of the display for the incredible exhibition and am so grateful for this opportunity.

Digital Presentation
youtube
This is my digital presentation giving a brief overview of my project and some key information behind it, talking about my final garment, my design boards, and the research/ experimenting that went into them.
After a lot if trial and errors I could not upload the original powerpoint to YouTube and even with the help of the IT person we were still unable to do it so unfortunately I had to take a video of my laptop whilst the presentation was recording so the quality isn't the best but I believe you can still get a rough idea of what's going on.

Commercial Plan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is a rough plan for my behind the scenes commercial in which I want to create quite a messy simplistic style with a variation of all my videos from the illustration process, the sewing and fabric cutting as well as a few clips of my final design and design boards.

Design Boards
Here are my final 11 design boards featuring a mix of both dragons and fairy wings. Although I kept these designs quite simple I think it really helps the illustration pop and make them stand out more due to their delicate nature. As well as this I named each of my illustrations and wrote a little description of the meaning of what each meant which I think helped add a bit of a personal touch. I further decided on rotating between dragons and fairies to link in with Cannon Hall and my final garment as we see a dragon on the bodice inspired by the dragon glove box at Cannon Hall and I have done a lot of research into this areas previously and love drawing dragons. For the fairy wings I took inspiration from fairyland at Cannon Hall further shown through my illustrations in which are quite whimsical and fairylike. I really like the effect this all has put together and believe it works really nicely as a whole.

Design Board Layout Ideas
Here I experimented with a variety of different layouts for my design boards. I knew I wanted something simple as my designs were quite large and prominent and I liked the idea of incorporating some form of fairy element to link in with fairyland at Cannon Hall as my designs are quite whimsical and fairy like.
To experiment with layouts in a more time effective manner I have done the majority of these as quit and messy digital sketches just to get a rough idea.
IDEA 1
For this layout I wanted the focus to be on the name as seen by the second design using the origin of the name (the flower) as a key feature enhanced by stripe of a colour seen in my design in the background to tie it all together, as well as this I added some little fairies flying around to show the link to fair land that I wanted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought this idea looked pretty good digitally however as soon as I did it onto the drawing paper it just did not come together as I wanted. I think the fairies look awkward and childish and the flower seems out of place. Due to this I added the band or flowers around the bottom to match the ones in the dress as well as adding little stars and random lines. However their is now way too much going on and it looks very messy and draws attention away from the illustration.
Tumblr media
IDEA 2
Still linking in with the fairies, for this layout I edited some fairy wings onto my illustration instead of the fairies scattered around however once again it looks very childish and doesn’t compliment the design.
Tumblr media
IDEA 3
For my 4th idea I incorporated the flowers/ vines from the dress and digitally placed them at the bottom of the page in which I kind of like however I’m not overly happy enough with it to take it forward as I feel more can be done to tie it in with Cannon Hall.
Tumblr media
IDEA 4
Going in a slightly different direction, here I have tested out doubling up my illustrations by adding a photocopied version behind it. I surprisingly like this quite a lot especially on the designs which have a bit more going on rather than a solid skirt for example however I felt it slightly distracted from the main illustration so I tried this again but with a layer of tracing paper between in which I think worked really well.

IDEA 5
For this idea I tried incorporating some direct link to Cannon Hall such as images of the gardens . I did this in black and white to help my design to stand out as well as doubling up the illustrations to add a bit of depth . With Thai I experimented with the flower the dress is named after as well as adding some purple lines to match the dress. I further added an image of my final garment to see how that would work and I think it looks quite nice, I tested this in both black and white and normal to see which one worked better and I think I prefer the black and white however I wanted to test out some other ideas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
IDEA 8
Once again with the e fairy wings I illustrated these blue ones using watercolour in this wishy washy style. I do like this idea of incorporating fairy wings however I feel it blends inti the dress to much and takes away from the design however I really like how it looks with the blue dress bellow. In addition to this I experimented with the doubling up again and layering tracing paper in-between.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continuing with this wing idea I two more quick illustrations, one being more messy and jagged whilst the other being more delicate and detailed, I prefer this one a lot more and think this is the design I want to go forward with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Similar to the previous one I did I created 4 slightly different wings using black biro pen however this time I did the lines a lot lighter to match more so with the skin. Now I just need to photocopy these to get the reversed side.
Tumblr media
IDEA 9
Similar to the wings I wanted to keep this layout pretty simple too so I got some dragon illustrations I had previously done for my sketchbook and played them out and I think they compliment the designs quite nicely and I used the same media s I did for the skin shoes and heads and it further helps to link it into Cannon Hall.
Tumblr media
FINAL DESIGN
For my final design boards I have decided to take forward the biro fairy wing illustrations along with the dragon illustrations as I wanted to keep the boards fairly simple due to the fact my designs are quite large and theirs a lot going on. I further intend to add the shoes to the background of the ones who art wearing any as I really like the shoe illustrations I did and think it helps add a little something to the boards. In addition to this I liked the doubling up idea with tracing paper so I think I also want to take this forward and test out some ideas with that.

Photoshoot - Sketchbook
These are my sketchbook pages I have created from my photoshoot as well as some behind the scenes images and the process of making my final garment.
For the indoor photoshoot I decided to add the pearls and flowers I put into my models hair on the day onto the page to add a bit more of a person touch and I believe it works really well with the page.
I also created a little illustration to match my design boards where I cut out the dress and illustration the skin then added the same shoes and head my final illustration wears in which I think turned out really cool and I love the effect of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition, I really enjoyed doing this photoshoot and think the photos turned out really well and showcase my garment nicely. I got a variety of photos inside the museum as well as in the gardens meaning for a lovely variation of backdrops and lighting for my photoshoot.

Final Designs
As a whole I am really happy with how my collection turned out and love the floral theme throughout it showing that direct link to Cannon Hall. I also like the fairy like/ whimsical feel my collection presents further linking to Cannon Hall and Fairyland. As well as this I incorporated this modern twist to my collection as I wanted some more differentiation in my designs along with a bit of a more of an abstract feel so it stood out more and ahead a bit more of a personalised element. In addition, I feel this more stylised effect really adds to my designs and compliments it nicely especially with the metallic watercolour further exaggerating whimsical side of my collection. As a whole I really love how this collection turned out and am very glad with style choice I chose and the fact I chose to focus on flowers as I believe it makes my designs stand out even more. Finally, on the majority of these deigns I've incorporated these little stars /sparkles to add an extra bit of texture and link in with the John Spencer bookplate in which incorporates stars in its design, further helping to link in with Cannon Hall

Final Illustration
Final Garment - Cloak - Viridis
Here is my final illustration of my cloak for my collection ‘In Bloom’ for my garment ‘Viridis’. The inspiration for this garment came from the flowers in the gardens at Cannon Hall to match with my dress. I really love the cloak in which I made and think I did a pretty good job illustrating it here using the same colour pink as done in the flowers on the dress as well as the same green for the bow as done on the dress.I then illustrated a very messy / vague sketch of the print in the Hood by adding a few splurges of pink green and grey to emulate the swans and the flowers. Furthermore, I decided to use silver metallic watercolour for the entire lining to give it a bit of depth and detail as well as on the flowers to really enhance on them as they are the main bit of the design. Finally, for the manikin I wanted to make this match with the rest of my illustrations so like I did with the skin on my others I used black biro pen to add the shadows and texture in which I actually really like the look of and think it works really well with the whole design further helping to tie the whole collection together. In conclusion I think this illustration turned out really well and should compliment my final design on my design board nicely.

Final Illustration
Final Garment - Dress - Viridis
Here is an illustration of my final garment 'Viridis'. The name ‘Viridis’ came from the Latin word for green in which stands for blooming, verdant, fresh and young showcasing many of the elements of my design and my collection as a whole. For the silhouette I have stuck with the traditional Georgian Silhouette sticking with the brief set by Cannon Hall and Cosprop a period correct costume as this is the design I have made. The sleaves are a huge part of any Georgian gown due to their oversized nature and overall extravagance, therefore here I have incorporated this large tiered sleeve in which I matched with the underskirt. Furthermore bringing in inspiration from the gardens at Cannon Hall I incorporated flowers going down the front of the dress as well as the neck and sleeves. I further tried to get this illustration to look as similar to my final garment as possible whilst still sticking to the style of my entire collection in which I believe I have done quite well however I did decide not to include the dragon as it just didn't feel cohesive with the rest of my collection and I wasn't able to illustrate it well enough on such a small area meaning I felt it would just ruin my illustration. in contrast to this I obviously knew the colours this design was going to be as it was already designed and made in which I really love this colour combination and the overall look of this piece enhanced by the texture on the outer skirt giving the piece an extra bit of detail matching with the sleeves and underskirt. Furthermore, I added the metallic watercolour in the green to add a bit more definition as well as on the white in which added the little stars once again. In conclusion, I really like this design and believe its a really good replica of my final garment showing a nice conclusion to the piece and my collection as a whole.
