Dress toile.
Method of construction.
Dress
1. Cut out the front skirt and back skirt pieces with 1cm seam allowance
2. Sew darts into fabric
3. Sew patches to the front skirt in whichever way you want, I used a big zig zag stitch
4. Sew back skirt pieces to front skirt piece and overlock seams
5. Cut out your bottom skirt and your bottom skirt wedge in your fabric with 1cm seam allowance
6. Take your bottom skirt wedge and sew your bias binding strips on an equal distance apart in your desired pattern
7. Sew your bottom skirt pieces and bottom wedge piece together and overlock all seams
8. Roll up the bottom skirt by 1cm and sew all the way around
9. Match up your skirt seams to your bottom skirt seams good side to goos side and sew around, then overlock the seam
10. Cut out your front bodice, side bodice, side back bodice and back bodice out in your fabric with 1cm seam allowance
11. Sew your side bodice pieces to your front bodice
12. Sew your side back bodice pieces to your side bodice pieces
13. Sew your back bodice pieces to your side back bodice pieces
14. Sew your bodice to your skirt good side to good side
15. Make another bodice using the steps above
16. Sew an invisible zipper into your dress with a zipper foot then change to a one sided zipper foot and sew down the back seam of the dress
17. Sew the second bodice onto the bodice attached to your skirt leaving the bottom open essentially sewing a U shape
18. Flip the bodice the correct way
19. Invisible stitch the bottom of the bodice (rolled 1cm up) to the inside of the dress
When making my dress we started with a basic skirt block for the skirt of my dress. We extended the pattern the make the skirt the length I had wanted. When I sew the pieces together I realised that the skirt looked quite boxy instead of curving in towards the bottom of the leg like i had wanted. When we got to making the bottom of the skirt we measured around the bottom of the skirt we then drew that measurement out and added a few more centimeters to the bottom to create a flowy effect to the bottom of the dress. For the top of the dress we created a simple top i originally wanted to have it be a button up at the front but later decided to top stitch strip of bias on to match whith the cape.

Cape toile.
Method of Construction
Cape
1. Cut out pattern back cape and side cape in your fabric with 1cm seam allowance
2. Sew the side cape pieces to the back cape piece to create your cape lining
3. Cut out pattern back cape and side cape in your fabric with 1cm seam allowance
4. Sew your bias binding strips to all three pattern pieces an equal measured distance apart in your desired pattern
5. Once all of your bias strips are on sew the side cape to the back cape
6. Sew your cape lining to your cape with the bias strips on the good side to good side leaving the neck open essentially sewing a U shape
7. Cut out the neck ruffle in your fabric
8. Fold the fabric in half good side to good side and sew the two sides together leaving the bottom open
9. Iron the piece so it lays flat. Flip the piece the right way round
10. Cut out your collar stand in your fabric
11. Put collar stands good side to good side and insert neck ruffle into top edge and ropes into the sides
12. Sew along the sides and top edge trapping the neck ruffle and ropes inside
13. Flip the piece the right way round and press
14. Sew collar stand to neck edge of cape on the good side
15. Invisible stitch collar stand (rolled 1cm up) to neck edge
When starting to create a pattern for my toile we used a basic bodice block to get the shoulder shape for the cape however when I first put the toile together we found that the cape was not as flowy as I'd imagined and that the shoulders were not as round as we wanted and seemed more square. Also in my original toile I did not have a collar stand I just had a collar which made the collar flop down and not have the gathered paper bag effect I'd wanted. For the collar the original fit around the neck and flared at the end this however did not give the ruffle affect I'd wanted so we had to change my pattern. For the new pattern we made a long strip and then gathered the bottom to fit around the neck which gave the full ruffled affect that I had wanted. Another struggle i encountered was adding my bias strips to my fabric. I wanted to have different sizes and colours to create a plaid pattern a problem arose when trying to figure out how get the strips to match along all 3 pieces in my final garment I had to pin the pieces in place to make sure I had the most accurate line up of my bias strips.

Designs.
These are all of my initial designs they are all inspired by the different characters in the wizard of oz and wicked.
For my elphaba designs I tried to incorporate different pleats, ruffles and techniques to add texture to her garments and represent the rough nature inspired essence elphabas movie garments have.
For my glinda inspired designs I tried to make them have quite puffy elements to show glindas light and airy nature. I tried to include different aspects from all the different variations of glindas bubble dress. For example I've added a bubble pattern to the garments which is inspired by the 2024 wicked movie bubble dress and for one of the designs I did a layered skirt inspired by the original 2003 wicked production bubble dress.
For my scarecrow garments i tried to include all the messy elements of a scarecrow such as the hay, rope and patches and designed them in a high fashion way.
For my nessa rose designs I did one design for each half of wicked. For the first half I tried to design something quite sweet and modest including layers and ruffles to show nessas innocence and naivety during the first half of wicked. For my second design i tried to make it seem quite large and powerful looking to represent the dramatic change in nessa rose after becoming governor and gaining a dramatic amount of power after her father's death.

Samples.
These are a few of my samples. For my first two samples I wanted to try and merge elements of different characters. For my first one I decided to weave different textured pink fabrics inspired by glinda into a burlap fabric that I thought looked like something a scarecrow would be made from. I did the same with my second one but instead of glindas pinky tones I used darker green textures fabrics inspired by elphaba. For my third sample I cut out strips of fabric and zig zag stitched them on to the burlap fabric to create a plaid style effect inspired by the scarecrow. For my fourth sample I sewed strips of black and white fabric together this sample isn't my best as the fabric was quite stretchy so the strips are not all the same width, this sample was inspired by the wicked witch of the easts stripy socks. My final sample is inspired by the scarecrow for this sample I used the burlap fabric again and zig zag stitched a couple of squares onto it. After this i added weaved in strips of hay to add to the scarecrow effect.

Samples and fashion research.
For my basic samples I used different types of fabrics to make open and closed seams. I did this try to figure out which fabrics would be best to use for my final garment. I'm glad I did this as some of the fabrics were quite difficult to work with and would not have worked for my final garment.
On this page I also did some research into the costumes of wicked. The costumes throughout the wicked movies were designed by American fashion designer paul tazewell.

Initial research
These are my moodboards based of the wizard of oz.
The 'the wizard of oz' we know today originated as a children's novel by L Frank Baum in 1900 titled 'the wonderful wizard of oz. 'The wonderful wizard of oz' was then later adapted for the stage into a musical comedy titled 'The wizard of oz' which made its debut at the Chicago grand opera house in 1902. It then went on tour through the upper Midwest before moving to the majestic theatre on Broadway in January of 1903. After this the show went on several more tours throughout the country. Then in 1910 the first ever on screen 'The wonderful wizard of oz' was realised, it was a thirteen minute black and white silent film directed by otis turner. After this there were many more stage and screen adaptations until 1939 when the arguably most famous adaptation was released. In 1939 'the wizard of oz' was realised by mgm studios into theatres across the world. The movie started the up and coming actress Judy Garland and was a technicolor marvel. This adaptation was the most known adaptation of the wizard of oz and went on to win an abundance of prestigious awards.
This inspired the author Gregory maguire to write a novel titled 'Wicked: The life and times of the wicked witch of the west' which was released in 1995. This novel was later adapted into the musical wicked which made its debut at the Curran theatre in san Francisco on June 10th 2003. And went on to do many more tours and shows in the west end becoming on of the most famous and beloved musicals in history.

Initial research.
For this page I did reasearch into the famous ozdust ballroom scene where glinda stands up for elphaba and their friendship begins.
This scene is significant as glinda pushes aside others opinions to help someone who is scrutinised for their differences. This is the start of glindas character growth and how she starts to become known as 'glinda the good'.
Glindas ruffled pink and gold petal dress was also designed by paul tazewell. He was living in London at the time of shooting and was heavily inspired by the ombre roses in regents park. Her satin shoes were custom dyed to match her dress. The flower is significant as the theme of nature is heavily present in both the girls dresses.
Elphabas dress was also designed by paul tazewell. He chose the colour of black not just for her ozdust outfit but for all of Elphabas outfit as it shows her still mourning the death of her mother which she believed she caused. Her outfit was inspired by nature mostly roots and mushrooms. The outfit being connected to nature speaks for elphabas character and her advocacy for the animals.
Elphabas hat was inspired by william wallance penslaws illustrations in the original 1900 novel. The hat us made of neoprene and consists of micro pleats made to represent the underside of mushrooms. The hat is a symbol of elphaba and glindas sisterhood as glinda gifts it to mock elphaba but it turns out to be the thing that brings them together in the iconic ozdust scene.

Initial research.
I started this project by looking into the opening scene of wicked where glinda is going to announce the wicked witches death.
I looked into the significance of the iconic bubble dress and how it was created. It was designed by American costume designer paul tazewell who has also worked on projects such as hamilton, in the heights and death becomes her.
The dress was inspired by the original billie Burke glinda dress from the 1939 film 'the wizard of oz'. The dress was made with 137 pattern pieces and took around 225 hours of hand beading with over 20,000 beads.
They didn't make the dress blue like in the original 2003 wicked production as they wanted to stay true to the original 1939 film and the dress was only blue in the 2003 production because of copy right issues.
