I hate it when English speaker complains about French orthagraph.

Like there is a very simple reason why it's like that and let me show you with a random sentence:

"Le roi ne doit pas se casser le doigt droit quand il boit avec son bois." Normal French

"Le roi ne doi pas se casser le doi droi quand il boi avec son boi." How some English speaker things french should be.

"Le ver vert versa l'eau vers le verre." NF

"Le ver ver versa l'o ver le ver." HSESTFSB.

I could probably find more, but with those two sentences you should see why it's orthagraph is like that, there is also rule, it's not some random letters put together.
