okay i made the decision to start using tumblr again after a few years!!! very excited!! it’ll probably be a mixed bag of video games and pop culture, and i’ll post edits again.

would love to keep my friends and mutuals but this blog is about ten years old now and i’d like a fresh start! 

my url here has returned to the classic unova-queen (you may also have known me as the-ghost-town or misshallery) and this blog is now an archive.

pokemon regions + themes

KANTO

Kanto was the setting of the first games, so the idea of venturing out for the first time and getting to the grips with the world is explored a lot. Kanto is also a very urbanised region and everyone is obsessed with the advancement of technology and new inventions- the idea of a Pokemon Professor was invented here, after all.

JOHTO

Johto is based on the real-life Japanese region of Kansai, whose people are known for being more laid back than most, so Johto is also slow-moving and peaceful. The region is also defined by its historical architecture and landmarks like the Ruins of Alph and the Bell Tower.

HOENN

Hoenn has a very exotic climate, and was originally formed by Groudon and Kyogre, two powerful forces of nature whose intense powers are countered by Rayquaza. The balance of nature is very delicate, and Team Flare and Aqua seek to disturb it. Hoenn’s name signifies ‘abundant relations’ in Japanese and this region really emphasises the bond between human and Pokemon.

SINNOH

Sinnoh’s myths and legends are important given it is thought to be the region in which Pokemon first came into existence. Stories such as that of the Lake Guardians and Arceus’ creation are widely shared. Sinnoh’s name denotes ‘mystery’, and its secrets such as the Distortion World are hard to decipher, shrouded like the region’s often thick fog. 

UNOVA

Unovans are very opinionated, with people holding different values but living in harmony regardless. The region’s Japanese name comes from ‘unity’. The battle of truth and ideals is a central theme in the story of Black and White, and the two brothers who founded the region argued over that very thing. The answer seems to be a compromise between the two.

KALOS

Kalos is very ‘high culture’ like the metropolitan France it is based on. Art, fashion and beauty are all important in the region. People are motivated by their love and passion for their dreams and ideals, and Team Flare wishes for a beautiful, perfect world. Xerneas and Yveltal symbolise life and death.

ALOLA

Family and friends are the strongest bonds in Alola, and people are warm and welcoming with each other. Alolans deal with rapid change over the course of Sun and Moon. Tradition is important and preserved carefully, but new people and ideas shape the region and a balance is found between culture and the future.
