Tirunelveli Medical College Observes World Environment Day with Green Initiatives
Tirunelveli, June 5, 2025: In observance of World Environment Day, the Green Movement of Tirunelveli Medical College organized a vibrant celebration on campus today. Marking the global occasion held every year on June 5, the event aimed to promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices.
As part of the celebrations, tree saplings and flowering plants were planted within the hospital premises, enhancing the campus greenery and symbolizing a commitment to environmental restoration.
This year’s World Environment Day theme — “Beat Plastic Pollution” — was central to the program. Under the leadership of Dean Dr. Revathy Balan MD., faculty, students, and staff took a Plastic-Free Pledge, reaffirming their dedication to eliminating plastic use and embracing eco-friendly alternatives.
The event saw the participation of key medical college officials, including
Dr. Balasubramaniam, Medical Superintendent, Dr. A. S. Mohan MD., Rtd HOD of General Medicine, Dr. Kumarasamy, Dr. Sujatha Andrews, Coordinator of the Green Movement; and Mr. V. Selvan, Nursing Tutor and National UN Volunteer. Nursing and intern students actively engaged in the initiative, holding placards with environmental awareness messages, adding color and consciousness to the occasion.
In her address, Dean Dr. Revathy Balan emphasized the day’s significance:
World Environment Day reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect nature and preserve it for future generations. The environmental crises we face today air and water pollution, plastic waste, and climate change are all human made. But as creators of the problem, we also hold the power to solve them.
Sharing simple yet impactful actions individuals can take to protect the environment:
Plant and nurture trees
Minimize plastic usage
Conserve water and electricity
Respect and preserve natural resources
Raise environmental awareness in our communities
Small steps can lead to big changes,” he stated. “If we want to leave behind a green, livable planet for future generations, we must act now. Love nature, protect the environment — it’s the only way forward.
Following this, Mr. Selvan addressed the gathering,
Like the energy within an atom, the cosmic form hidden inside a tiny seed is what becomes the wondrous tree.
It is painful to see that, in the name of modern civilization, we are avoiding cloth bags and continuing to use plastic.
Plastic does not degrade for a long time. It also prevents rainwater from seeping into the soil. So, let us take a firm pledge today not to destroy the bounties of Mother Nature by using plastic.
The event concluded with enthusiastic participation from students and staff, reinforcing Tirunelveli Medical College’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
