Showing 'Determination' in Writing
Jaw set firmly, lips pressed into a thin line.
Eyes focused intensely, not wavering.
Shoulders squared, standing tall and firm.
Fists clenched tightly.
Taking deep, steady breaths to maintain calm.
Saying, âI will do thisâ with conviction.
Pushing back sleeves as if preparing for action.
Marching forward with purposeful steps.
Ignoring distractions or interruptions.
Voice steady and unwavering.
Nodding to oneself as if reaffirming resolve.
Gritting teeth in concentration.
Placing hands on hips confidently.
Writing or speaking with clarity and precision.
Pounding a fist into an open palm.
Looking straight ahead, not letting gaze drift.
Tightening grip on tools or objects theyâre working with.
Breaking tasks into manageable steps and tackling them one by one.
Keeping eyes on the goal, not looking back.
Saying, âNothing will stop meâ with steely determination.

Emotionally reserved characters
Instead of openly sharing their emotions with others, they keep their feelings locked inside, letting their inner thoughts do all the talking. You get a glimpse into their mind, where a storm of conflicts, doubts, and desires brews quietly beneath a calm exterior. This internal monologue allows readers to understand whatâs going on inside their head, even if they donât show it on the outside. Itâs like seeing the world through their eyes, where every little thing stirs up a wave of emotions that they never express out loud.
For these characters, actions speak louder than words, but even their actions are restrained. They communicate their emotions through the smallest of gesturesâa slight tightening of the jaw when theyâre angry or hurt, a brief flicker in their eyes when theyâre surprised, or a controlled change in posture when something makes them uncomfortable. These tiny, almost imperceptible movements can say so much more than an outburst ever could, hinting at feelings they would never openly share. Itâs about what they donât do as much as what they do.
When they do speak, every word is carefully chosen. Emotionally reserved characters donât ramble or spill their feelings in a flood of words. Instead, they speak in a measured and controlled manner, always keeping their emotions in check. Their sentences are concise, sometimes even vague or indirect, leaving others guessing about what theyâre really thinking. Itâs not that they donât feel deeply, they just prefer to keep those feelings close to the chest, hidden behind a mask of calm and composure.
For these characters, what they do is often more telling than what they say. They might not say âI care about youâ outright, but youâll see it in the way they go out of their way to help, the quiet ways they show up for the people they love. Their actions reveal their emotionsâwhether itâs a protective gesture, a silent sacrifice, or a kind deed done without expectation of recognition. Itâs these unspoken acts of kindness that show their true feelings, even if they never say them out loud.
They often have strong personal boundaries. They keep their private lives just that - private. They donât open up easily and are cautious about who they let into their inner circle. They might deflect conversations away from themselves or avoid sharing personal details altogether. Itâs not that they donât want to connect, itâs just that they find it hard to lower their walls and let others in, fearing vulnerability or judgment.
When they do show vulnerability, itâs in small, controlled doses. These characters may have moments where they let their guard down, but only in private or with someone they deeply trust.
Sometimes, emotionally reserved characters express their feelings through objects that hold special significance to them. Maybe itâs a worn-out book they keep close, a piece of jewelry they never take off, or an old letter tucked away in a drawer. These symbolic objects are like anchors, holding memories and emotions they canât express in words. They serve as tangible reminders of their inner world, representing feelings they keep buried deep inside.
When these characters communicate, thereâs often more to their words than meets the eye. They speak in subtext, using irony, implication, or ambiguity to convey what they really mean without saying it outright. Their conversations are filled with hidden meanings and unspoken truths, creating layers of depth in their interactions with others. You have to read between the lines to understand what theyâre really saying because what they leave unsaid is just as important as what they do say.
Despite their calm demeanor, there are certain things that can break through their emotional reserve. Specific triggers - like a painful memory, a deep-seated fear, or a personal loss - can elicit a strong emotional response, revealing the depth of their feelings. These moments of intensity are rare but powerful, showing that even the most reserved characters have a breaking point.
Over time, emotionally reserved characters can evolve, gradually revealing more about themselves as they grow and change. Maybe they start to trust more, opening up to those around them, or perhaps they experience something that challenges their emotional barriers, forcing them to confront their feelings head-on.

Good Traits Gone Bad
Empathy turning into manipulation
Imagine a character who is deeply empathetic, someone who genuinely feels and understands the emotions of others. At first, this makes them incredibly compassionate and kind, always there to lend an ear or offer comfort. But over time, this empathy begins to shift. Instead of just understanding how others feel, they start to use that understanding to manipulate those around them. They know exactly what to say to get people to do what they want, twisting their caring nature into a tool for control. What once was a beautiful gift becomes a weapon, used to bend others to their will without them even realizing it.
Confidence becoming arrogance
Think of someone who exudes confidenceâsomeone who knows their worth and isnât afraid to go after what they want. This kind of self-assuredness is magnetic and inspiring, drawing people in. But sometimes, this confidence can grow into something darker. The character starts to believe theyâre always right, that their way is the best and only way. They dismiss othersâ ideas and opinions, thinking they know better than everyone else. What was once a healthy self-esteem turns into arrogance, pushing people away as they start to feel belittled and unappreciated.
Ambition turning into obsession
Picture a character who is ambitious and driven, always striving for the next big achievement. Their dedication is admirable, pushing them to work hard and aim high. But ambition can have a dark side, too. Slowly, their drive becomes an obsession. They start to focus solely on their goals, willing to sacrifice anything or anyone who stands in their way. Friends, family, and even their own health fall by the wayside as they chase success at any cost. What was once an admirable quality turns destructive, consuming them completely.
Loyalty becoming blind devotion
Loyalty is such a beautiful trait. A loyal character is dependable, someone who stands by the people they care about no matter what. But loyalty can also become dangerous if it goes too far. This character might start to overlook red flags or harmful behaviors, sticking by someone or something even when itâs clearly detrimental. They become so blindly devoted that they lose sight of their own well-being and moral compass. What starts as a positive trait turns into a kind of self-destructive stubbornness, harming them more than helping.
Courage turning into recklessness
Imagine someone whoâs incredibly brave, always ready to face challenges head-on and stand up for what they believe in. At first, this courage is inspiring, giving them the strength to overcome obstacles and help others. But sometimes, courage can cross a line. It turns into recklessness, making them take unnecessary risks without considering the consequences. They start to believe theyâre invincible, putting themselves and others in danger because theyâre too focused on proving their bravery. What was once a powerful strength becomes a dangerous flaw.
Determination becoming stubbornness
Thereâs something admirable about a character who never gives up, no matter how tough things get. Their determination helps them push through difficulties and keep going when others might quit. But when that determination turns into stubbornness, itâs a different story. They refuse to change their minds, even when all the signs point to a different path. They ignore advice, dismiss alternative viewpoints, and stick to their course out of sheer willpower, even when itâs clearly not working. Their once-praiseworthy persistence becomes a source of frustration for those around them.
Optimism becoming naivety
Someone who always looks on the bright side, no matter what. Their optimism is contagious, lifting the spirits of those around them and helping them see the silver lining in every situation. But if they arenât careful, this optimism can morph into naivety. They might start ignoring real dangers or fail to recognize when theyâre being taken advantage of. Their rosy outlook makes them blind to harsh realities, and they become easily deceived or led astray, all because theyâre so focused on seeing the good in everything and everyone.
Protectiveness turning into possessiveness
A character who is naturally protective of their loved ones, always looking out for them and ensuring theyâre safe and happy. This protectiveness is heartwarming and makes those around them feel cherished. But when protectiveness goes too far, it can become possessiveness. The character starts to feel like they own the people they care about, becoming overly controlling and jealous. They start dictating others' actions, justifying it as care, but itâs really about their need to keep everything under their control. What started as a caring instinct turns into something suffocating and unhealthy.
Altruism becoming self-neglect
Think about a character who is incredibly selfless, always putting others' needs before their own. Theyâre the kind of person who would give you the shirt off their back, always ready to help, always there for everyone. But this selflessness can go too far. It turns into self-neglect, where they completely disregard their own needs and well-being. They keep giving and giving until they have nothing left, leading to burnout and exhaustion. Their altruism, while beautiful, ends up harming them because they donât know how to set boundaries or take care of themselves.
Honesty becoming brutal bluntness
Thereâs a lot to be said for a character who is straightforward and honest, someone who tells it like it is and doesnât sugarcoat the truth. People appreciate their transparency and trustworthiness. But when honesty turns into brutal bluntness, itâs no longer a positive trait. This character starts to disregard others' feelings, using their honesty as an excuse to be harsh and tactless. Their words cut deep, hurting those around them, all in the name of being truthful. What was once refreshing candor becomes a source of pain, as they lose sight of the importance of kindness in communication.

Signs of Falling in Love
When youâre falling in love, it can be such a magical experience, full of little signs that your feelings are growing. You might find yourself blushing whenever that special person is near, your cheeks turning a shade of pink without you even realizing it. Itâs as if your body knows something your mind is just starting to understand.
You start seeking eye contact more often, feeling a flutter in your chest whenever your eyes meet. But then, you might shyly look away, overwhelmed by the intensity of the moment. You can't help but smile frequently, often for no apparent reason. Itâs not that anything particularly funny is happening, itâs just that thinking about this person makes you so incredibly happy.
Physical contact becomes something you crave, even in the smallest forms. You might find yourself lightly touching their arm or shoulder as you talk, just to feel closer. When theyâre around, you might catch yourself constantly playing with your hair, a subconscious way of dealing with the nervous excitement you feel in their presence.
Humor takes on a whole new importance. Suddenly, youâre laughing at all their jokes, even the ones that arenât particularly funny. Itâs not really about the joke itself but more about the joy of sharing that moment together. Your brain might even go into overdrive, causing you to stammer or struggle to find the right words when you speak to them, as if your thoughts canât quite keep up with your emotions.
You find yourself coming up with excuses to be near them, finding reasons to cross paths or spend time together. When youâre around them, itâs like your stomach is filled with butterflies, fluttering with nervous excitement. Your heart races whenever theyâre close, beating so fast youâre sure itâs obvious to everyone around.
When theyâre not around, your mind drifts off, daydreaming about them, replaying past conversations, and imagining future ones. You get lost in their eyes, feeling like you could stare into them forever. Thereâs this strong urge to share everything with them, from the big moments to the little ones, as if theyâre the only person who truly understands.
You might catch yourself absentmindedly writing their name, doodling it in the margins of notebooks or in the air with your finger, as if itâs become your new favorite word. And when you think about them, youâre filled with a warm, fuzzy feeling, like your heart is wrapped in a cozy blanket of happiness. Itâs these little moments and feelings that make falling in love such a beautiful, confusing, and exhilarating experience.

Understanding Internal Conflict in Storytelling
Internal conflict is a vital tool in storytelling, enriching characters and deepening narrative impact. Understanding and effectively using internal conflict can transform a good story into a compelling, unforgettable one.
Introduction to Internal Conflict
Definition: Internal conflict refers to a psychological struggle within a character, often involving emotions, desires, or beliefs.
Purpose: It adds depth to characters, making them more relatable and complex.
Types of Internal Conflict
Moral Dilemmas: Situations where a character must choose between right and wrong, often with no clear answer.
Emotional Struggles: Conflicts arising from feelings like love, guilt, fear, or jealousy.
Identity Crises: Moments when characters question who they are or what they believe in.
Conflicting Desires: When a character's wants or needs are at odds with each other.
Examples of Internal Conflict
Classic Literature: Hamlet's indecision about avenging his father's death.
Modern Fiction: Katniss Everdeen's struggle between her survival instincts and her growing sense of rebellion in "The Hunger Games".
Film: Frodo Baggins grappling with the burden of the One Ring and its corrupting influence in "The Lord of the Rings".
Importance of Internal Conflict
Character Development: Drives growth and transformation, showing how characters evolve.
Engagement: Keeps readers invested in the characterâs journey by creating empathy and tension.
Theme Exploration: Allows writers to explore complex themes like morality, identity, and human nature.
Crafting Internal Conflict
Believability: Ensure the conflict is realistic and relatable to the audience.
Depth: Give characters more than one internal conflict to make them richer and more interesting.
Resolution: Show how characters resolve or cope with their internal struggles, even if itâs not a happy ending.
Questions to Consider
What is the characterâs main internal struggle?
How does this conflict affect their decisions and actions?
In what ways does the internal conflict drive the story forward?

Let's Edit: Tightening the Plot
Sometimes, deleting a few words from the manuscript will not be enough to get an immersive story with no draggin bits.
Here are some ideas.
Delete Unnecessary Bits
Delete introspection. Whenever your POV spends time thinking, assessing, remembering, musing or emoting, cut the lot.
Delete the journey. Whenever your character spends time walking, driving, rising or flying to a place, cut it short.
Delete backstory. Readers need to know less backstory than you think.
Shrink the sequels. Sequels are paragraphs where the author shows how characters react to the action in the previous paragraph.
Tighten the Plot
Condense the timeframe. Instead of a year, make it three months. You will have to watch out for continuity errors (no three Christmases in a year, character ages, etc.)
Condense the geography. Instead of fights happening in five different locations, have them happen on one place.
Condense the characters. Whenever there are several people of a kind (two sisters, four colleagues), let there be just one. You can also combine characters - the gym instructor is also the noisy neighbor, the choir conductor is also the owner of that pesky cat.
