“Universal Hollywoodland” 1996
We’ve previously provided a birds-eye view of a proposed Universal park for Germany and the European market, but today brings a more detailed look at some of the attractions. Remember that the park would be anchored by a large Empire State Building replica being climbed by the one and only King Kong. Some other attractions and properties visible in this art: Casper the Friendly Ghost in a Peter Pan-esque dark ride, coasters themed to Kong, Hercules, The Flintstones and Back to the Future, Jurassic Park rapids and swings, an E.T. spinner, and attractions featuring Jaws, Babe, and Twister.

“The Astronomers Club” 1990s
Planned for Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris, (and later, Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland) The Astronomers Club would have been a space and astronomy-themed restaurant set in a lavish Victorian observatory. Guests would dine in various dining rooms that would feature telescopes, murals, “active” star fields and more. Live actors portraying famous figures of astronomy like Galileo and Da Vinci would meet and interact with guests, recounting tales about their history and that of the stars. The project never came to be in Paris, and in Florida, the Discoveryland refresh of Tomorrowland was deemed too expensive and never happened.

“Discovery Island” 2003
Years before Disney made its grand entrance into the mainland Chinese market, Universal toyed with the idea of building a theme park in Shanghai. The following pieces, from Conceptual Design Group, show off what would have been the central retail/dining/entertainment structure that would anchor the park. Themed to King Kong, the structure would overlook a large lake, and purposely was designed to suggest an exotic locale, but not a specific location. The area was styled to be recognizable from all areas of the park, with elements from each land present in its design.

“Vulcania” Harper Goff, 1980s
Likely part of the canceled Port Disney project planned for Long Beach, California in the 1990s, this piece by Harper Goff shows off a different take on Captain Nemo’s island, Vulcania. Taking inspiration from the locales and ships of Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea film, this Vulcania would have featured a submarine ride, a ferris wheel, and a splashdown ride track. Another report about Port Disney’s Vulcania says the land would have featured a coaster called Nemo’s Lava Cruiser, an E-ticket attraction centered on Atlantis, and a Pirates Island exploration area. Port Disney never came to be, but so much of the visual look seen here was eventually incorporated into Tokyo DisneySea’s peerless Mysterious Island.
