The werewolf’s heavy breath followed Margo’s every step. The thought to fight crossed her mind, but she knew she was no match for a werewolf. These creatures had an unimaginable amount of power and even with her magic Margo still wouldn’t have enough time to defend herself, she had to keep running…
No matter how much she told herself to keep going, the deepening snow eventually overwhelmed Margo’s body and in a swift second Margo plunged into the wet heavy snow.
The creature was nearly an arm’s length away; fear had already frozen Margo, she couldn’t scream, she couldn’t move, her own conscience screamed ‘run away, run away before you die,’ yet she couldn’t.
Closer and closer the werewolf came… its massive paw rose into the air, claws drawn, ready to strike.
Margo had almost accepted her fate when a battle cry echoed through the trees. Quentin wasted not a second, he slashed and stabbed the creature hoping to grace Margo with enough time to pull herself together.
“Margo, Snap out of it!”
She didn’t, she hadn’t moved a single inch.
“Margo!” Quentin yelled, slamming his foot into the weakening werewolf, “Get up Margo!”
As if in slow motion Margo came back to reality, the world around her felt like a dream; There right in front of her Quentin stood not a scratch upon him and at his feet a nearly lifeless werewolf.
Quentin was at Margo’s side in an instant, his voice deeper and more distant than usual, “Are you hurt?”
“No,” her own voice sounding distorted, “I’m fine.”
“Can you walk?”
Margo nodded.
“Then we must leave quickly!” he spoke harshly, with his voice finally returning to normal.

The further she ran from the wagon the deeper the snow became, swallowing her legs with every step,  Margo ran as fast as her body could tolerate. Her heart pounded and lungs burned; no matter what, she had to keep running.

Anton had already prepared for a fight, he stood grounded waiting for the creatures to attack…
Quentin helped Margo from the wagon, “Listen to me Margo,” he whispered harshly, “I need you to run as fast as you can away from here, don’t stop. Just keep running.”
Margo’s fear overcame her, tears poured down her face, “Please don’t leave me, Quentin. Please…I don’t want to lose you.”
Quentin pulled her close, embracing her for what could be the last time, “I’ll be right behind you…Now go. Go!”

The wagon came to a halt, Anton and Quentin sat quietly, Fear began to grow within Margo, “Quentin, why have we stopped?”
He took her hand in his, and spoke lightly, “Werewolves, they’ve blocked our path.”
“Quentin, what you can and get Margo to safety,” Anton spoke sternly handing him a worn piece of parchment.
“What about you Anton?” Margo whined
“No questions, leave now!” he shouted.

The fourth day of their journey was nearly upon the trio and once again snow did no justice as it violently drifting across freshly made tracks.
“Anton,” Margo spoke loudly, trying to drown the wind’s howls, “I don’t wish to bother you but I’ve been thinking a lot lately; with all this Elania madness going on I really wanted to clear some things up.”
Anton’s monotone voice was loud and clear, “What is it that you want to know?”
Margo was overjoyed, it had been ages since she and Anton could have a decent exchange of words.
“Have you always been a leader to vigilantes?”
Anton huffed, “I wouldn’t call us vigilantes, we have a cause we are fighting for, there is no need to put a label upon it when you have a clear mindset of what your duties are.”
“Hmm, do you have a family?”
“Once, that was long ago. Long before you were even a speck of thought… I thought you wanted to clear things up, not ask of my history.”
“Anton, I’ve been at that manor for years now, I know nothing about you. You’ve taken care of Jaymen and me all this time and yet…”
“You, Jaymen, and all who stay in the Manor are my family now. My past is irrelevant and it holds far too much pain for me to continue focusing on it.”
“I’m sorry Anton, I wasn’t trying to pry.”
“Margo, there is no need to be sorry…Now, I must ask you a question as well; How far are you willing to go to put an end to Elania?”
This struck Margo, she truly didn’t know. So many people had their lives devastated by Elania, including herself, and many wanted Elania gone, but what were each one of them willing to risk to be rid of the evil witch.
“I’m sure I’ll find out,” Margo said quietly.
The wagon entered a partial clearing allowing the wind to continued its harsh tantrum at full force, thrashing the sides of the wagon as it continued along the snowy path.
“Don’t you think we should stop Anton?” Margo yelled.
Quentin answered for him, his expression becoming disturbed, “We’re being followed, we can’t stop.”
“What?! How can you even tell with all this wind and snow?”
Anton’s hand shot in front of them, “Quiet…Quentin, be prepared to run.”

A rhythmic knock echoed through the darkness bouncing off the crumbling chamber walls. Elania seemingly unaware of the noise quietly continued mixing her potions.
Footsteps drew closer; the light huffs of a rushed individual interrupted Elania’s concentration, her voice quiet and raspy;  “It is in your best interest to have important topics to discuss with me, otherwise this visit is much unwelcomed.”
The man cleared his throat, “I indeed have an important matter to discuss.”
“Speak then, Fool.” she hissed, “Don’t waste my time.”
“After your last attack, Anton and his vigilantes have since been divided through Garthal, stationed at several locations, Pilmeggon including. He has already collaborated with the knights within garthal and most, if not all, have equally been divided as well.”
Elania grew irritated, “Is that all? I care not of the vermin Anton keeps, nor do I care about his worthless knights…What of the girl, where is Margo?”
“Margo has been assigned to the realm of Grimmwick, accompanied by Anton and Quentin.” The man sputtered.
Elania’s informant could see the sickened amusement envelop her voice.
“Grimmwick? Of all the places…What could anyone in Grimmwick do for Garthal? What a fool that Anton is.” she cackled maniacally, “Tell me, where might I find Margo, I must relieve her from Anton’s ranks before she’s tainted any further with their vague ideals.”
“That I do not know, Madam Elania,” he spoke cautiously, “It has since…been three days, going onto the fourth since the three of them left Marrekvale.”
Elania’s attempt for composure snapped in the blink of an eye, “Four days!” she shouted, “Four days and NOW you come crawling to me with this information?”
“Please Madam Elania, it wasn’t my intention! Please, let me explain.”
“Pathetic! Just pathetic, what excuse could you possibly have?”
“I fear Anton suspects the presence of an traitor within his ranks.”

Late into the evening Margo, Quentin, and Anton were greeted to heavy snowfall blanketing the earth outside their tent.
“Where did this snow come from?” Margo shouted over the howling wind
“We’re close to the mountain border,” Anton quickly reminded Margo, climbing onto their horse, “If we don’t move out now, the snow will bury us.”
Quentin who was loading the wagon called out to Margo, “I have everything under control. There’s a cloak and a pair of gloves for you in the cart, load up before you catch your death.”
Margo made herself as comfortable as she could but the snow had already drifted inside the wagon coating the floor and all its contents.
Once Quentin boarded they were off; the horse rushed forward rocking the wagon to and frow, Anton pulled his cloak tight to his body, “Hold on! We’re in for a rough ride!”
Margo bounced about the wagon like a ragdoll, whereas Quentin remained still.
“I hope it isn’t like this the rest of our journey,” Margo’s voice rattled.
Anton shouted about the wind, “Best hope we even make it through this storm!”

More and more the air grew colder, the clear blue sky ultimately deceiving the trio.
Anton warned that the weather could change in a split second since they had gotten closer to the border between Garthal and Grimmwick. He announced that they would make camp during the daylight hours knowing very well traveling at night on very little rest would spell disaster for them.
A fire was built and rations were prepared, Anton had something important to say, and it was imperative they were prepared.
“We won’t be going to Grimmwick.” Anton simply stated.
“What! Why?” Quentin blurted, “Where else would we be going?”
Anton was quiet for a moment, he knew what he was about to say would come across selfish, “We’re taking Margo somewhere safe…Where she can learn to control her powers and Elania won’t find her.”
Margo was furious, “You tricked me!” she yelled.
Quentin too was furious, but he kept his composure, “Margo, let him explain. I’m sure there is more to his reasoning.”
Margo took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, “Anton, explain yourself before I completely lose my temper.”
“Margo, I truly did not mean to deceive you. Our plan to go to Grimmwick was intended, but I feel our plans to recruit have been compromised.”
Margo said nothing.
Quentin more concerned at the news spoke in her place, “Compromised? By what…or who? What do you mean?”
“Only our ranks and a few people in Grimmwick knew of our arrival. Unfortunately, I have not received word from a trusted individual in Grimmwick, which can only mean that our plans have been compromised.”
Margo yelled, “You’re basing this off the fact you didn’t receive a letter?!”
“Yes, Raven has been helping send the letters, so I trust you understand that importance.”
Margo calmed herself, “Yes I do, please go on.”
Anton started again, “Raven uses a soul’s aura to locate someone, she is exceptionally gifted identifying and using soul-based magic, therefore locating and contacting a person through this method is safest and most reliable…With that being said, when she and I spoke last she was unable to locate the person, assuming that something could go wrong we prepared an alternative.”
“So Anton, You’re just going to send Margo away and leave her somewhere because plans fell through? What is she going to do if that goes wrong?”
“I understand your concern, Quentin, fortunately for us, we will be staying with her. It would be far too dangerous for her to be there alone. There is much for me to discuss with the both of you but It shall be continued after we’ve rested  …To conclude our meeting I do warn you; be careful to whom you trust.”

“Anton,” Margo spoke up after hours of being on the road, “What’s Grimmwick like? I’ve never left Garthal before, not even as a child.”
He cleared this throat, “Almost always cold, and snowy, very rarely is it ever decent weather.”
Quentin joined the conversation, “The people are almost identical.”
“I’ll not lie about that one,” Anton agreed, “The people there are mountain folk, you don’t survive there by making friends. Can’t say I blame them when there are year-long snowy conditions.”
“I enjoy the snow,” grinned happily, “ I think I would be pleasant to have more in Garthal.”
“You’ll most likely reconsider when we get to Grimmwick,” Quentin spoke up again, “The snow brings some of the worst people and creatures. Garthal is lucky to have short winters.”
“Are the conditions there really that bad?”
“Comparing to Garthal yes,” Quentin spoke softly, “In Garthal there is Matreda Forest where man and beast alike can acquire food, shelter, and items to trade. Grimmwick has surrounding forests, just not as large as Matreda, but because of the conditions many people who get lost either on their way to or from…which lead towards attacking others for supplies because there isn’t much aside from snow and rocks.”
“I guess it’s a good thing we’re trained to defend ourselves, huh?”
Quentin shook his head, “Yeah, but it doesn’t hurt to stay cautious and aware.”
Margo wondered what else she could talk about, not much was known about Anton aside from him being a vampire and Quentin…There was so much she wanted to talk to Quentin about, yet so little she was allowed, especially since Anton was here with them. If only she could have just a few moments with Quentin, just to speak with him outside their informal ranks.

“Garthal’s knights are spread throughout the realm, therefore if anything should happen you will know; whether it be a sighting or an attack.”
“Sure, Anton.”
“Should you stray from your duties, I will have you locked up. Protecting these people and this town is your top priority.”
“Nothing I can’t handle boss, but no need to worry about me. Elania wants that damn Margo, you should be the one being careful.”
Anton glared harshly, “Mind your tongue, Elania cares little of who she harms.”
Silas replied simply, “Hmm, that so?”

Marrekvale was calm and quiet; the complete opposite of its usual characteristics, it seemed people had already begun preparing themselves for the worst…that being Elania.
“It’s all too real,” Margo sighed, “Elania leaves no one without fear.”
He nodded,  “Let’s hope Grimmwick is willing to aid in Elania’s destruction.”
“You don’t think they will?” Margo questioned in surprise.
“They have a choice to make Margo, risk their people for a situation that hasn’t involved them or aid us and become part of a war between realms. If Elania has only Garthal in her sights then what is it to them to get involved.”
“But Quentin, What if she has something planned for more than just Garthal? Wouldn’t they want to stop her first?”
“Only if it benefits them, unfortunately.”
It was unfortunate, Margo never understood the politics between the realms; if the only reason to help another was that it benefited their financial and trade growth not the safety or wellbeing of another, then why bother; they were no better than the enemy that sought to be rid of…
Margo’s expression descended into sadness. It pained Quentin to see Margo like this; more and more he could see the fears and sadness that she hid inside breach the surface, she was a beautiful rose being smother and sliced by her own thorns.

It had only been a few hours since Anton had announced everyone’s duties, and he was already growing impatient, “Now that all of you have finished your preparations, It is time for all of us to make for respected destinations.”
Silas scoffed, “Not that you gave us a choice.”
Anton gave Silas a stern look, then resumed, “I shouldn’t have to tell any of you this, but I shall: We now enter a time of crisis; the people of Garthal will, in short, look to you for safety and reassurance, it will be your duty to keep a watchful eye and assist these people as well as our brave knights.”
“Should we encounter Elania,” Jaymen blurted, “What should we do?”
“Jaymen, I should not have to explain this, should Elania or any of her followers make an appearance do not hesitate to aid in the expulsion of said threat… Protect the people, and rid the realm of these rogues.”
At that current moment, it seemed as if everyone had been holding their breath, attempting to ignore the ever-growing tension of the ever-changing situation they were soon to endure first hand.
“Are there any matters needed to be addressed before we take our leave?” Anton continued.
Not a word was uttered.
“Let’s move out.” Anton’s voice boomed through the silence.

A knock at her door startled Margo, shaking her from her thoughts.
“Margo, it’s Teive.”
“Come in!”
Upon entering Teive quickly rushed to Margo’s side, “I’ve just finished packing, have you?”
“Already done.”
“Oh Margo,”  Teive whined with sadness, “I can’t believe it’s come to this, there’s already so much death.” she sighed, “ I don’t understand, How did Elania get past our defenses and past the knights…And the North? Garthal must be in serious danger if we’re being sent across different realms…”
Margo was quiet for a moment, “We’re going to put an end to this, don’t lose faith, I know faith won’t bring back those we’ve lost and that we need to stay strong for them and ourselves…but Teive, I just don’t know if I can do this without you.”
“Well, at least you’ll have Quentin with you,” Teive giggled softly, “All will be okay.”
“I suppose,” Margo smiled.
Sadness overwhelmed the two young women.
Margo wiped the tears from her cheek, “We best say our goodbyes here, otherwise Anton will look down on us for our weakness…Teive you’re like family to me, please be safe.”
“You best be safe as well, I will write to you…I’ve been told Ravan has some enchanting ways to deliver letters.” Teive smiled through watery eyes.
“Trust me, I’ve seen it all.” Margo sniffled, returning a small smile.

When Margo arrived at the Manor all was quiet aside from faint voices that she could only assume came from the study, quickly she entered the room.
Anton addressed her the moment she walked through the door, “Margo, so good of you to join us,” he cleared his throat, “I cannot simplify the severity of the news I must share with you…As you all know, roughly two weeks ago Elania made an unwelcome and dangerous appearance right through our defenses, despite our eyes and ears littered through the realm of Garthal. Since then, I have received many reports that mention sightings of Elania throughout many villages and towns.”
“What do you want us to do about it?”Silas interrupted.
“Apparently subtlety is apposed,”  Anton growled, “The village of Pilmeggon has been destroyed. Since this is the work of Elania, not a mere act of the universe, I will be sending Teive and Jaymen to aid current survivors, search for missing persons and unfortunately prepare the departed for burial. Within the week volunteers and healers with be sent out as well.”
The silence was maddening, it was becoming all too real that Elania did not plan on another disappearing and anyone could be a target of her wrath.
“The rest of you will be heading to Marrekvale with me; from there Margo, Quentin and I will be heading North to the Realm of Grimmwick to recruit trained enchanters.”
Once again Silas interrupted, “My lucky day, I’ve always wanted to travel to Grimmwick. When are we leaving?”
Quentin who had enough of Silas’ disrespect spoke harshly, “Have you no respect! People have died and all you care about is traveling.”
“Gah!,” Silas spat, “Pilmeggon was a slum, what should we care.”
Margo too had enough, “They are our people nonetheless! Why should it matter where they came from or who they are! We are the first response to situations like this!”
“That is enough! All of you!” Anton yelled over the three, “Silas you will be stationed in Marrekvale, as we have knights stationed there as well…Now all of you have your duties please ready yourselves and we all move out in the morning.”

“Focus Margo, you’re doing wonderful!”
Margo laughed cheerfully, “I can’t believe I’m actually controlling the magic! Raven, can you believe it?!”
“I’m so very proud, All you needed was the right little push to help you…But remember to keep it under control at all times, this is just very basic magic, my dear.”
“Of course Raven, I will.”
