I was reading this blog about New Gods #5 [50 Year Old Comics] and at the very end they showed one of Jack Kirby's collages in full color, sourced from Old Gods & New, which funnily enough I own a physical copy of and forgot this was shown in it.

Anyway, just a few hours earlier tonight I had mentioned that it would've been great to see what some of these pages looked like in full color. At the time I was referring to the wild solar-phone dance sequence in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #137. But hey, this particular collage is much more relevant to my interests, so I'll take it!

And so I've copypasta'd the original text and drawing onto the collage and did my best to match up the resolutions so that we could see what the full effect might have been, had they been able to print with these colors. Interestingly, there are two extra planets in the black and white version just under the narration box. I'm guessing that perhaps those fell off the original collage over time, as you can see it has some wear and tear at the top right of the blue donut.

Regardless, next time you see this infamous page cross your path, remember that the galaxy Metron traverses is full of lively color!

Kate update.

I made a new sideblog as a vent/nsfw account. Wish I could make it private like how twitter does where you can request to follow and you cant retweet but otherwise it works the same. Ive said it before, but tumblrs private blogs are a joke. Password protected? Nobody's going to go out of their way to check an account that doesnt show up on their dash. 🙄

Anyway, still deciding how I want to proceed. Not going to share it yet, but expect that ill probably ask if anyone wants to follow in the near future.

Getting into an extremely popular and mainstream superhero was the best decision I've ever made because I truly get to see my guy everywhere. Just saw a batman birthday cake at the grocery store and my brain immediately got flooded by serotonin. I love it

Some late night ramblings...

Ive been thinking about Metron's nonexistent backstory. He says he's not of New Genesis or Apokolips, but does that mean literally or that he just doesn't have allegiance to them? He says he's something different, and Kirby really felt he was a god for our modern age, representing technology and all the wonders and caveats that go with it. I mean Metron was created around the time of the space race, the moon landing. But like who is he really? What is this character meant to be doing besides moving the plot along? How does he grow? How does he enrich the world of the New Gods? These are the kinds of things i ponder at night.

So yeah, his backstory. I was thinking what if there had been a story exploring his own youth. I mean he didnt pop out of the ground as a fully formed adult right? He was a kid at some point, probably with parents, living in some place. What was that like?? What was his upbringing? Was he a loner because he didn't fit in? Did he have more emotions back then? Was he obnoxiously brilliant? So many questions.

And then i was thinking.. did he have a mentor???? We know he has tried to mentor others to take his place in a couple comic runs, and both times it didnt work out. So what about him? Who was his teacher? Who was the important adult in his life? Who shaped young Metron? And.. what happened to them. I cant help but imagine some tragic story of loss that left Metron changed and adrift. Like what if the person who had originally taken him under their wing was actually really big on empathy and love and emotions? Like maybe they taught the value of living things and art and all that, and they were more genius level than Metron ever was, but through some series of events they died bc of something related to emotions and thats why Metron decided to carve his own out completely?

Okay im grasping at straws here, but it could be an interesting tale.

Or who knows maybe his mentor was someone just like him. That doesnt seem quite as juicy but theres some potential. Maybe it goes to an extreme, like it was someone far more devoid of emotion than even Metron, and after their passing he didnt know if he could ever fill their shoes.

Orrrr perhaps all of this is just me daydreaming and he really did just start existing as-is out of nowhere. But i like the many ways young Metron could have gone through his most formative times. I might chew on the idea a bit more as i fall asleep.

Heartbeat is looking for two things.

Who she is

Home

Makes sense for someone with amnesia. Over the course of the story she will find

Who she becomes in a world where she starts with a clean slate

A place where she belongs

But she will suffer a case of grass is always greener, and throw that away in exchange for who she was and what she used to call home, only to find that she doesnt fit, and to realize that she never did.

Also through the course of the story, new goals arise that are less direct, and certainly not what she thinks are her driving desires.

To harness her powers

To win Metron's approval and admiration

The first of these is obvious and overt. She's basically told by Metron this is something she must do. Thematically, unlocking powers and feeling connected to these otherworldly forces and even communicating with her Mother Box all run parallel to her understanding herself and who she is.

The second of these is a desire that develops as she interacts with someone who is an anomaly. Someone different and offbeat, and is it a coincidence that he also does not seem to fit in? But he definitely knows who he is, and though weird and off-putting by others' standards, his unwavering comfortableness with himself is something that she is drawn to. And maybe subconsciously she sees in him that it's possible to make any place your home if you have strength in yourself. Or perhaps it's that if he of all people can accept her and let her in, that would be enough to feel at ease in a world where nothing else fits.

Wrt lrb

Nearly everyone in the notes has the same feelings.

Only mildly bad take i saw was someone that seemed to think reblogging a post was the same as talking about a character without reading the comics (i think thats what they were saying?) Sweaty you're lurking, youre not IN the fandom.

And while i agree w the people saying to block none of these are that bad, you understand in the same breath youre saying two things right? Like i can only imagine you blocked bc you didnt like something, therefore something was bad enough for you to do that. Right? So you agree? There ARE things that peeve you in fandom. I guess the reason i kind of side eyed those responses is bc they came of as a little high and mighty.

Um the only other interesting thing so far was the prevalence of complaints about the Danny Phantom crossovers. And my dudes, i do not disagree lol. Honorable mention to those.
