i don't care whether Snape's new actor is white or black or asian... it's the fact that taking an attractive actor defies the root purpose of Snape's character: being disagreeable emotionally AND physically. is it really that difficult to find a lanky, awkward, black haired, big-nosed man that isn't handsome in the eyes of society, in modern filming industry?

villains that are "ugly" by definition aren't received the same way "attractive" villains are, it's a fact. It happens in real life, with real people too and it's called pretty privilege

True, because:

Harry found refuge at Hogwarts, where he felt welcomed, supported, and protected from the very beginning. Severus did not.

Harry had adult figures who protected him, cared about him (Hagrid, the Weasleys, Dumbledore, Lupin, Sirius...), and showed him affection over the years. Severus did not.

Harry had two friends who would have torn apart anyone who dared to strip him in front of the entire school. Severus did not.

Harry and Malfoy had a rivalry because they were on equal footing. Severus was bullied by a group of guys who attacked him together and were far above him socially and economically.

Harry was rich—disgustingly rich, to be exact. Severus was disgustingly poor.

Harry felt loved from the moment Hagrid came for him just after his 11th birthday. Severus never felt loved in his entire damn life.

Harry was favored by Dumbledore and other school staff on multiple occasions. Dumbledore forced Severus to stay silent about an attempted murder against him.

Harry had choices. Severus had nothing.

A concept for Spooky Season:

“Hey, Tony,” Clint began, turning his coffee mug in careful circles.

“Clint,” Tony replied patiently, not looking up from pouring his own cup of coffee.

Clint considered the four-leaf clover that flashed briefly at the top of his mug, then looked up at him. “Are you a monster fucker?”

Steve spewed his scrambled eggs.

“Um… yeah?” Tony answered after some thought, sparing Steve a confused frown before deciding to ignore him, because Steve often had weird reactions to Clint’s questions. “Or, well, I’ll date and sleep with non-humans. Some don’t appreciate the monster moniker.”

“Of course, of course,” Clint agreed, nodding. “But like. That’s more of a statement about you than them.”

Tony thought about this, then nodded. “I guess. Yeah, I’m a monster fucker.”

Clint gave Steve a sly glance. “How interesting.” He watched Steve choke on air without pity, then turned, continuing, “Have you ever slept with a werewolf?”

“Um, yeah? It was a while ago…” Tony frowned again, crossing his arms as he tried to remember exactly. “I think I was still in my twenties.”

“But you’re not opposed to werewolves,” Clint asked, looking for confirmation.

Tony blinked at him placidly. “Clint, if you want tips on how to court Bucky, you can just say so.”

“Oh no,” Clint said as Steve stopped coughing to give him a sharp smile that was all teeth. He had no idea how Tony hadn’t figured out how Steve was also a werewolf when he did shit like this right in front of his oblivious face. “This has backfired horrendously.”

“Don’t use big words like that before my second cup of coffee,” Tony scoffed. “I won’t believe they came out of your mouth.”

“I can’t wait to tell Bucky all about this,” Steve rumbled in a way that only Clint would hear it, and Clint screamed in dismay.

Why donate when AO3 already has money?

I see a lot of conversation floating around about how AO3 regularly makes over its goals, and while that’s true, I think people don’t quite get the situation.

1. Donating $10 gets you “membership”. This allows you to vote in OTW Board elections. Does this ultimately matter? Maybe, maybe not. Many past elections have been uncontested or had candidates who were functionally pretty similar. On the other hand, being involved in the political process is never a waste. However much AO3 already has, if you want a vote, you need to join.

2. OTW’s fundraising goals, especially during the pandemic, have been… unrealistic. They’ve pared it down to what they need to stay open. That’s not a real goal. That’s a kindness to not panic fandom during trying times.

If we want AO3 to invest in serious code improvements like making the damn no-fandom tag wrangling possible again or actually completing those plans for a block feature, that means more money than just staying barely afloat. If we want OTW to expand what it does–image hosting on AO3, for example–that means money in reserve, an endowment, interest income. These are good and important things for the long-term health of any charity or arts organization.

I haven’t been involved in years, so I don’t know the internal discussions around money, but it’s obvious from the outside that AO3 is basically treading water. Every six months or year or so, some big thing comes down the pike that makes AO3′s traffic go nuts or creates some massive headache for the support staff. To move past this kind of status quo, OTW would need serious money, far, far beyond what they get in drives now–and I’m talking the full amount they get, not the absurd initial goals.

So yeah, for people who know tech budgets or who understand how nonprofits that last for decades, not a couple of years, work, it still makes sense to donate even if AO3 has blown past its nominal donations goal.

I know we love to ponder relationships between mortals and immortals, and how much that unequal lifespan would have a lasting impact on the immortal.

... But I don't think we talk enough about the mortal. The tragedy of knowing you will leave the one you love, eventually, through no fault or desire of your own. Death is a concept you have no choice but to understand. But them? By the time you've grown to peacefully accept your end, they will still be scrambling for peace, scrambling for answers, and there's nothing you can do about it, no comfort that will make the coming centuries easier. Their minds, however complex and brilliant, simply are not built to grasp the loss the way you can.

You have to live knowing they have all these years ahead of them without you. Knowing they have to go on, and you won't be there to ease them or hold them. Knowing they'll literally be there for you your whole life - but you can't return the favour, no matter how much you want to.

By making this higher being fall for you, you've (in a way) doomed them to an eternity of missing you. I wonder how much that would weigh on you.

ideal supernatural scene is an otherwise deserted motel pool, brothers in t-shirts and boxers floating among pine needles and dead bugs and nursing lukewarm beers and sam says remember you always dunked me when we were kids that was so annoying and dean says not as annoying as the fake-drowning thing you would do after. you were such a fucking drama queen dude. and sam says oh you mean like this? :) and rolls over and sags like a corpse face-down in the water. and when he comes up for air dean flips the bird and laughs with him but right before that there was a moment of stillness where we as the audience watched dean watching sam play dead and we saw the look on his face and went oh okay so this character is extremely unwell.

consider: Jason Todd, son of Bruce Wayne, is way more of a cryptid than Batman, so far as Gotham is concerned

basically, this is what the average Gothamite knows:

Jason Todd, the first adopted son of Bruce Wayne – while he did adopt Dick Grayson, his first ward, it wasn’t until Grayson was well into adulthood – was presumed dead following a tragic incident while he was studying abroad in the Middle East. Then, many years later, Todd returned to Gotham, revealing that he had survived, and took over ownership of the Iceberg Lounge for a few months, and then promptly vanished again. (Everything in this paragraph is canon, btw. Most of it is from RHatO 2016, particularly issue 32.)

Was his death faked? Did Wayne know he survived? Where is he now???? Nobody knows.

If you want to include preboot canon, you can add “Bruce Wayne lost custody of him for a time and he was briefly adopted by Natalia Knight, who was secretly the villain Nocturna; Wayne regained custody after her criminal activities were exposed. Did his disappearance have something to do with her?”

Somehow, Jason’s civilian identity is literally a bigger cryptid than any of their vigilante identities, including Red Hood. The entire family is like “thanks, I hate it!” Jason himself can’t decide if he thinks it’s hilarious or if he hates it.

He nonetheless makes a point to use his actual name for some innocuous thing about once a year, always in completely random places scattered around the globe. Generally he lets one (1) person get a semi-decent picture of him, and then he vanishes again. The internet always blows up over the sighting of the cryptid Wayne son. Jason is enjoying it more than he should. (Barbara will never admit it, but as Oracle, she finds it incredibly funny.)
