Local Food Forestry
KITCHENER — A tiny urban forest quietly grows in a patch of grass behind the Forest Heights Community Centre on Queens Boulevard It took 40 volunteers to transform the forlorn corner of green space into a food forest last summer. The urban forest isn’t a thicket of shady fruit-bearing trees yet, but with patience and care it will be.   Nicola Thomas points out lush purple plums on one of the…

Jane Walk Success
Over 40 people attended the Jane Walk and participated in building two fedges/food hedges. Fedges are a great way to create a fence hedge from edible plants. In our case we are using a variety of berry bushes placed close together to create the fedge.         Here you can see the layout of the lasagna garden bed utilizing perrmaculture practices  to the left and the completed fedge below.…

Garden City Vision
As the need for organic food increases, the need to grow our own food becomes more obvious. Organic food is extremely expensive and out of reach for a huge demographic in our communities. More than a year ago through my permaculture research, I found a number of cities looking at the idea of food forestry.   Food forestry uses biomimicry which is an approach to sustainable solutions by…

YL Grounding Essential Oil Blend
YL Grounding Essential Oil Blend
I enjoy sharing my experiences and love for essential oils. The debate almost always comes up about which oils are best. This is really a hard question as we all have different perspectives on what makes an essential oil good, whether it is price, ethics and or the quality of the oils. The best advice is to do your research and make that decision yourself.   Essential oils have been used as…

Bioshelter Pond
Once I realized I could grow food and have fish with aquaponics in the greenhouse, my imagination went wild. I envisioned a quiet, tranquil, cozy space where I could smell, hear and see water, as well as an abundance of aromatic plants, growing in synergy with the fish. Most of the bioshelter examples I could find were solely concerned about growing food, but the bioshelter I wanted to build…

Incredible Edibles
A couple of years ago a friend sent me the link to the Todmorden video which started my obsession and passion for accessible locally grown free organic food (food forests). I was really surprised that I didn’t have a link to this fantastic group of people that had sparked such a fire in me. Well today I am going to rectify that and share the link with you all, hopefully sparking the fire in you.…
