Interview: Logic Da Beatman Shares Exclusive Seaboard Track, Discusses Workflow
We had the pleasure to be involved with G.O.O.D Music Producer Charlie Heat’s (Kayne West’s The Life of Pablo, Madonna’s Rebel Heart)House of 99: Open House Producer Showcase at CODA in Philadelphia. Charlie put the spotlight on over 20 local, aspiring producers to showcase their beats and production to a packed crowd as well an all-star panel including producer CritaCal and James Flynt of 300 Entertainment.
The judges critiqued and offer valuable feedback on the producers’ works, then selected a winning producer to receive an in-studio session with Charlie Heat, get featured on Blend and win a Seaboard RISE from ROLI. After reviewing everyones beats, Charlie and the judges announce the finalist: trap meets neo soul producer AJ “Logic Da Beatman” Wallace from South Jersey.
Stream and Remix Logic Da Beatman’s Exclusive Track featuring the Seaboard RISE:
Roli Seaboard Rise Project by Logic Da Beatman
We had the chance to catch up with Logic Da Beatman when he was in the studio on his workflow, inspiration and the win.
Which artist or song inspired you first to start producing music?
That’s a great question that’s hard to answer, haha. My dad was a DJ and my mom was an MC, so it’s safe to say I was born on hip hop. It’s really hard to choose one particular song but a stand out song for me was Grindin’ by The Clipse.
What was the first piece of gear you started making music on, and how has your workflow evolved?
I first started making beats on a Roland 909. And my workflow was - I had a Roland 909 and a mixer that had an eight second sampler built into it. So I would find a sample and pray to God that it could fit into the sampler, then I’d lay some drums to it live on the 909 (because the built-in sequencer didn’t work), and I would record it all to cassette tape. After that I went through a few DAWs, but now I’m strictly using Ableton.
I know you have won production contests before; what was special about Charlie Heat’s Open House for you? The crowd loved your beats and charisma!
Man, thank you, I really appreciate that. One thing that stood out to me was that this was a contest that was put on by people who are actually doing what I want to do for a living. I knew that if I could stand out from the competition that it would be the door opener for me to develop relationships with the judges and even some of the producers that competed with me.

What excited you most about the Seaboard RISE?
Honestly, how flexible it is. When I saw the ROLI demo at NAMM, I was totally blown away. I always wondered what I could do with it in my workflow and now that I finally have it, I’m seeing that this is more than just a piece of equipment! It allows me to add more feeling to my melodies. It’s one thing to program MIDI into a song and it’s another to have a musician come in and play for you on a track. For those producers who don’t have the budget or the network to have work with live musicians, the Seaboard is the way to go.
What are some of your favorite sounds on Equator?
I really like the humming voice pad…that stood out to me a lot. And I love the guitar overdrive mono lead. I love how it sounds and feels like a live guitar!
What projects do you have in the works?
So many things! Mainly working with some Philly-based artists that you might know. Ever since the winning of the showcase, I’ve been busier than ever. Just be on the lookout for ‘Prod. By Logic Da Beatman.’
