Leasers in the Gorge - 1 by Greg Brown Via Flickr: A westbound grainer closes in on Bingen, Washington during a clear summer afternoon. We never seemed to get very many of these blue beauties in the Columbia River Gorge. The GM logo on the nose reminded me of my father’s Corvair.

On the Hi-Dry: Extra 8111 South
In a series of four posts, I’ll share twenty images of one train seen on one afternoon. These were taken on the Indianapolis District of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad between Morgantown and Bloomington, Indiana. This line became the heart of the Indiana Rail Road in 1986.
While not the “normal” angle on the subject here, the first picture has the train crossing over the much-photographed Shuffle Creek Viaduct, which is located on the south side of Lake Lemon. The second image shows the train at New Unionville while the third and fourth pictures were taken from the old wooden bridge—now long gone—that carried State Road 45 over the tracks. The final image above has the train passing the graveyard off Mount Gilead Road, about four and a half miles east of Bloomington.
Five images by Richard Koenig; taken March 25th 1977 (3 of 4).

Green Bay Western Action, Part One
I recently scanned a few slides I made along this charming regional road, the Green Bay and Western. This railroad operated for nearly 100 years, from 1896 to 1993, until it was gobbled up by the Wisconsin Central. Looking today via Google Maps, it seems that most, if not nearly all, of the rails have been abandoned.
I had to ask for help to get locations on these shots—and received it from Dan Luedke, a conductor on the road. The first picture was made at Oneida, Wisconsin, at milepost 10, while the second was taken one mile west of Seymour, at MP 18.

Alco at Work
Here’s an Alco RS3 working in the environs of Chicago Union Station. It is first seen shoving what seems to be the Southwest Limited down into the platforms. (I assume that much if not all of the train is ex-ATSF, including that interesting transition car, just in front of the high-level cars.)
After placing the train, the black Alco comes prancing out—it was built in 1950 for the New Haven, carrying the number 523.

All is still. A heavy Lake Erie snow blankets the mainline that runs across Buffalo’s wooded hills. It’s barely dawn, and even for those well-versed in raw, northern winters, the sharp chill of 10-degree morning air is bitter enough to bring any human back indoors.
NS trains, however, are on the move – and so is Cory Rusch.
Perched above the mainline, Rusch has been waiting. He readies his camera. In the distance, soft, crystalline snow erupts into the air and fades into a powdery, glittering haze as an oncoming freight train approaches. Suddenly, NS 36T bursts into view, cutting through the winter silence in a rush of vibrant color and thunderous momentum.
Rusch approaches his role as an NS trainman with that same patience and passion.
“Railroading isn’t about what’s easy,” he says. “That shot shows exactly how this company works. We run 24/7, 365 days a year. We move anything, in any weather. We don’t quit until the job is done – and when it’s over, we know we’ve done it right.”
Pictured: December 2020 NS Calendar Photo by Cory Rusch, conductor, Buffalo, New York. A heavy evening snow off of Lake Erie created a stunning early-morning backdrop for Norfolk Southern train 36T on its journey from Buffalo, New York, to Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Running West From Avon
Here are some trains running west out of Avon, in central Indiana. This is the former Big Four/New York Central between Indianapolis and St. Louis. The time frame is not long after the formation of Conrail, and so we’re seeing what once would have been considered foreign just three months earlier.
The first train we see, leaving Avon itself, is endowed with an Erie Lackawanna SDP45, which was unique to that road. (This model of locomotive never contained a steam generators, however.) The second train is seen at Country Road 625E and White Lick Creek, just west of Avon. The train has a unit of the Reading Company running second.
The third train is seen at State Road 39 just south of Danville, Indiana. Again, there is a Reading unit second in the consist. And the last train turns out to be the first: with the EL SDP45. This location is where South County Road 700 W runs over the line.

My idea of an excursion train worth chasing
flickr
My idea of an excursion train worth chasing by Greg Brown Via Flickr: Returning to Portland from Bend, a Union Pacific excursion train rolls through the Deschutes River Canyon near Sherar, Oregon. Thanks to the confluence of the White River, this is the only spot in the Deschutes River Canyon where you can get a train photograph with the peak of Mount Hood in the distance.
