he said it all confident but we now have the bonus pov chapter and know the man was going *through* it
Obviously we knew Xaden knows he’s better than Dain and has never questioned that but Violet being like “I didn’t sleep with Dain” and Xaden being like “yeah I knew that as soon as I saw that awkward as fuck threshing kiss” was just everything

i just can't stop thinking about why would jesinia be telling the story from violet's pov in first person, in present tense, and being so graphic with the sex scenes. girlie is giving it her all into the smut.
one of the things i simultaneously love and dread about the fourth wing books are these little blurbs at the start of each chapter and the whole fact that the whole series is told through jesinia’s translations. it’s such a creative storytelling vehicle but also what tf happens to these characters I’m gonna cry

I've seen a lot of people say this but I believe they were both having the same dream? I think the Venin general wants them both. The only difference was Violet thought it was a dream while I think Xaden knew all along it was something else and, again, decided not to share it with her.
IT WAS XADENS FUCKING NIGHTMARE NOT VIOLETS OH MY GOD AHDJFKFKGLFLDLAL

Choose your fighter:
"I figured the thing at graduation was him [Dain] and Riorson dick-measuring, but you don't speak to Aetos anymore" - Rhiannon Matthias. Iron Flame, Ch. 21
vs
"Do you boys just want to whip it out and measure?" It would be faster" - Random Rider. Fourth Wing, Ch. 27
Dain, Xaden, and Violet: literally screaming about their love triangle in the courtyard.

wings, sections and squads all have a leader and an executive officer. from what i understand, 2nd years are usually squad executive officers, unless they're truly exceptional and get to be squad leaders. from what i've gathered they can 'apply' for leadership positions (my guess is they do it each year after the war games and then command chooses among them). so yeah all wing/section leaders and exec. officers are 3rd years, the latter taking lead if the former is absent. squad leaders can be both 2nd or 3rd years (but mostly 3rd) and squad executive officers are either 2nd & 3rd or just 2nd years.
i don't think it necessarily matters which squad/section/wing you are from when applying for a leadership position, they probably choose the best of the entire quadrant at the end/begining of the year and re-arrange whatever's necessary.
from the iron flame preview i think it's pretty safe to say dain is indeed a wingleader. no idea about cianna, but my guess is she either rose to squad leader (of any squad) or an even higher position. and basing myself on how much praise rhiannon got throughout the book im really hoping she got that squad leader position (and maybe violet gets to be her exec. officer?? manifesting)
yeah i also got that the name of the book was because they were the iron squad and from flame section. no idea why that could be though
the only thing i never understood is why is nyra the 'senior wingleader' they're all 3rd years what seniority does she have ?? is it just a way to say she's the wingleaders' leader?
so from what i've been seeing while rereading fourth wing, each "leader" (wing-, section- and squad-) has their own executive officer:
It took the commandant all of five minutes to appoint Lamani Zohar as wingleader for Third Wing after Amber was executed, but since she was already executive officer, it made the most sense.
=> meaning wing executive officers are most likely to replace wingleaders, but this begs some questions.
is that only for emergencies during the year, like when someone dies?
are both wingleader and wing execution officer necessarily third years (graduating together)?
or can the wing executive officer be a second year and just be promoted to a wingleader in their third year? because if so, i might have news for shitstain dain!
"I’m the one who left my post, my position, and my executive officer in charge of my wing."
is what xaden tells mira at montserrat (coincidentally after she tells dain doesn't deserve to become a wingleader if he keeps acting this way), but we unfortunately don't know who the executive officer for fourth wing is...
and no, it's not garrick or bodhi, neither of them is a wing executive officer:
“As it was a matter of life and death, I personally executed six of the would-be murderers, as witnessed by Flame Section Leader Garrick Tavis and Tail Section Executive Officer Bodhi Durran.”
not cianna, either:
“We’re going to win,” Cianna, our executive officer, proclaims with a decisive nod.
+
“We’re down to ten of you,” Dain says, glancing over our group. “Twelve of us in total, which puts us at a slight disadvantage against a couple other squads, but I think we’ll manage.”
=> meaning she's the executive officer for second squad, flame section, fourth wing, while dain is the squad leader
so do you guys think it might not be dain next year?
that he might just become a section leader or a section/wing executive officer instead?
would cianna become the new leader of second squad, flame section, fourth wing?
or would rhiannon?
do you think the name "iron flame" is going to matter? (violet's squad, dubbed the iron squad, flame section, fourth wing)

““I’m not good with relationships, Shallan.” “Is there anyone who actually is? I mean, is there really someone out there who looks at relationships and thinks, ‘You know what, I’ve got this’? Personally, I rather think we’re all collectively idiots about it.””

i don't think he had anything to do with it either, but i also don't think he ever thought of violet fully as his enemy. let's remember he *knows* brennan, and while we don't know how close they are i think it's pretty safe to say brennan probably has mentioned violet to him before (and notice how both xaden and liam seem to know so many details about violet's life before joining the riders?), and at most thought as her as a possible spy from leadership, because he thought she was supposed to be a scribe and well, yeah she is general sorrengail's daughter. he also mentions he felt attracted to her since the beginning during his pov, just kept denying it. yes, he always led her on with her 'he wants to kill me' theory, but absolutely everything he did showed he was actually helping her (he shadowed her from the other marked ones when she was spying on them, let her go when he knew dain could've read her memories about their gathering, pushed her to train instead of poisoning her rivals so she actually learns, told her to think of an unconventional way to pass the gauntlet, etc).
again, i don't think he had anything to do with tairn and andarna bonding violet, as if dragons could be manipulated like that, lol. plus even though i don't think he thought of her as her enemy, why would he want her bonded to him?? that's just one more life under his responsibility and he already had 107. and he was *furious* about her putting her life at risk defending andarna from 3 armed cadets, even if he found it admirable
i don't think xaden lied when he said he had nothing to do with tairn (or andarna) bonding violet btw... like, ppl are out there theorizing he told sgaeyl about her as soon as he met her at parapet - which is allegedly why sgaeyl checks violet out when they get into formation for the first time - and that they came up with this plan for tairn to bond violet at threshing back then but that's impossible for a variety of reasons, like:
if you met your mortal enemy, would you seriously ask your ginormous fire breathing beast of a dragon to do you a little tiny favor and ask their even more ginormous mate to bond them ?? because it simply makes no sense for him to want her to have a dragon as strong as tairn
xaden must've known what repercussions being bonded to mated dragons would have for him and violet (not being able to stay apart for long, causing a chain of deaths if just one of them dies, mental communication - like who would want that with their enemy?? he reiterates that so many times after the bond)
not to mention he has no say in the choices of dragons, as no human does - sometimes even other dragons don't, like it was with sgaeyl bonding xaden (a relative of her previous rider), or andarna choosing to be at presentation and then at threshing too
even if he somehow already liked her at threshing (or earlier), he still wouldn't want that because she's already got such good odds of dying, and being bonded to tairn means like fifty more people suddenly had it out for her, and he'd have to protect her while also being a wingleader, part of the weapon smugglers for the rebellion, and a personal counselor for all the marked ones
going as far as to say this happened months in advance (on conscription day, exactly after meeting her) is particularly illogical, when xaden told violet he wouldn't bother killing her because the parapet would do it for him - i have no doubt he believed it would, and a part of him maybe wanted it at that point in time too
xaden's not one for planning so far into the future, neither is he one for hoping - he's said that possibilities are dangerous because they distract from probabilities, and we all know violet surviving so long in basgiath basically had the odds of a statistical mistake - so he simply wouldn't have done that even if he thought she'd make it past parapet
now, despite still having a distaste for violet at that point, xaden was also admittedly interested in her, because he knew whose daughter she was and when he saw her and rhiannon's mismatched boots, he realized the former risked her life to save a stranger's - and that's probably what sgaeyl got from him that made her pay close attention to violet the first time she saw her after parapet

i actually think lilith is either a double agent or simply not that bad... i know the storm during parapet theory BUT listen to me... remember the paragraph before chapter 5 where we read her brief to the king about how she's against the children of the rebellion leaders watching their parents die? and i should re-read to be sure, but wasn't she the one who struck that deal so they would get proscripted to the riders quadrant instead of executed? (yes, with xaden suffering ik). and she apparently never pushed for violet to be a rider until *after* her father died, which tells me she knows something shady about that... i feel like there's a reason she didn't want her there. she was also absolutely confident violet could become a rider on the first chapter so... yeah, i think lilith does love her children, and the reason she seems that bad is because we're only seeing her from violet's pov (and she's not that reliable guys. she kept thinking xaden looked at her with hatred when the man was just horny, that imogen was flirting with xaden when she was after garrick, believing dain respected her space when he was reading her mind and giving people who wanted to kill her second chances because she thought they could change their mind... she's not a great judge of character ok)
Fourth Wing Spoilers! 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
Violet's mom tried to kill her. Her mother can control storms and the rain started as soon as Violet stepped on the parapet and ended when she got off. It says multiple times that she believes the wind is only affecting her and is avoiding the other people walking across.
Violet's mom had a venin blade so she obviously knows about their existence. I also believe she was attacked by venin while she was pregnant with Violet and that is why Violet is described as "bleached of color" and the silver of her hair.
Naolin died bringing Brennan back to life.
I am torn between thinking that her dad ¹. Died from the grief of losing Brennan
². Was poisoned by his wife because he found out too much and losing their sin was the perfect cover
³. Still alive and has been with Brennan in Arieta this entire time.
Because he left Violet that note in the Forbidden book of fables and said "by the time you read this you will be in the Scribe Quadrant" and voilet often described his final days as him being confused and erratic.
So many thoughts are going through my head

Sgaeyl: Hurry, Tairn, I need you.
Tairn *already on his way*: What happened? Is the Golden One in danger?
Sgaeyl: No, no, I have that covered. But my idiot of a rider is horny as fuck for this pint-sized woman here and if she gets herself killed before he can mate her, he'll mope around forever. So I need a way for her not to die too quickly.
Tairn:... you've got be kidding me...
