It is unreasonable for President Biden to imply that the Republicans were “forcing his hand” to close the borders. If former President Trump has been out of office for 3 years, why is it until just now that Biden chooses to close the border. Seeking asylum is an important aspect for many people, and it is unjust these people risk their lives to seek asylum and for the opportunity of a better life to receive nothing in return. Biden is planning on using money that he does not have, and cannot be promised. This implements more future problems surrounding this year's elections. The closing of the border will have little to no effect on the number of unlawful entering of the United States, as individuals and families will keep trying.

Surviving a botched execution seems like it would be worse than the actual execution. Thomas Creech had been waiting nearly five decades for his last day, and as it turns out, he has to continue waiting. He had to suffer, watching people try to inject a drug that was supposed to effortlessly end his life. He is not the only one to survive such an experience. The death penalty, as unnecessary and immoral as it is, should be concrete. If you are sentenced to death, then you die. Creech sometimes feels that he actually died and this is his “continued punishment for the sins that [he has] committed.” There is no guarantee that the prison will be given another opportunity to go through this process again, but there is no point, as it is just wasting time and money.

Would we want this 12 year old boy to get the death penalty? People could argue why he should get the death penalty, and also why he should not. He who kills must also be killed? It is said that this was an accident, and was completely unexpected. The boy has been charged with second degree manslaughter, negligent homicide, and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon. There has been a growth in gun violence among children and teens in the United States. The young boy will have to endure a lifetime of legal and criminal battles, starting at a young age. This is already a great amount of punishment for him.

Over 36 individuals involved with the Mexican Presidential election have been killed, and have stayed almost unsolved as to why. Violence in Mexico is largely due to conflicts between rival gangs fighting for power, or a higher status. These gangs put in many efforts to assert their dominance in communities, overpowering Mexican authorities.
In agreement with Mary Ann Glendon, we cannot sustain a strong community without feeling responsibility for others. If we are so caught up in the idea of our own improvement, we simultaneously push others below us. The gangs in Mexico want to show their power, and they demonstrate it through acts of violence that harm others. If they had not had these intentions, the Mexican government could be less corrupt.

Muslim activists in India have been experiencing a form of religious discrimination. India’s Bharatiya Janata Party has continuously promoted anti-muslim media through many online social media spaces. This sort of “religious radicalization” has been present in the country for decades, and activists have experienced all types of dangers while trying to spread their message.
The political parties in India, or in any country, should not have a clearly dominant religion. By doing so, the citizens would be able to freely exert their religious beliefs without being punished for criticizing the BJP’s policies. One of India’s freedoms, as stated in the Constitution of India, is freedom of belief and expression. The constitution also prohibits discrimination based on religion, so is the BJP violating their own country’s constitution by discriminating against Muslims?

Many individuals living in third world countries consider risking their lives for better lives in another country. The movie “Io Capitano” depicts the devastating journey that migrants undertake on their routes from Africa to Europe. In the actor’s words, “the cinematic ordeal felt too real.” Although the purpose of the film is not to offer an opportunity for more people to feel empathetic for those who choose to take that path, I feel as though the movie effectively conveys as so. This raises awareness of the needs that others might have, and why we should, in our human nature, understand their suffering and recognize those people as the same as we are.

The country of Burkina Faso has been experiencing ongoing violence from extremist groups for years. The nation’s military is said to have “waged a brutal war of its own” – suspectingly targeting civilians who may be working with jihadists, sometimes as a form of revenge. In some circumstances, rebels that associated with Al Qaeda had to live under an “interpretation of Islamic Law . . . in exchange for supposed protection.” The government must take accountability for the crisis and humanitarian challenges that are taking place in their country. The government is a national association that should be acting on the principles of its society, needing to protect its citizens.

A teenager was fatally shot by police due to terroristic suspicions. This was the most effective option in this situation because the individual had previously harmed another man, and had been under watch for extremist tendencies for years. The police could have saved 1, the boy, or saved 1000 in their community. The teenager had decided to harm another man with a given reason, so he was subject to his own punishment. The police had the right to enact on the boy because of their natural rights; Every man has a right to enforce the law of nature and punish offenders.

In Malawi, young girls are expected to attend camps, learning about motherhood and “how to sexually please a man” (Kondowe). It is common for the girls to not continue their education when they come back, and often marry young. Memory Banda, a child rights activist, has worked endlessly for years to bring awareness and help the girls out of this situation. Despite her efforts, many of the girls cannot escape the cycle due to poverty and lack of support. Banda believes that there needs to be opportunities that change the way families and communities view the problem.
Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Women argues for the equal rights of women, starting from young ages. By convincing men and their communities that education needs to change for women to better future generations of men, Wollstonecraft was able to plant the roots of a new revolution. In order to create change for women, the source of the problem seemingly needs to revolve around the enhancement of the lives of men.

Why POLS470?
I chose to take this class because I am interested in a career of helping those who do not have as much protection or freedom of their rights. Helping those who are not given the same opportunities or freedoms that I do are of great importance to me, and I hope to make a greater impact globally in the future.
