Gohar comeback denies Tayeb
[3] Nouran Gohar (Egy) 3-2 [4] Nour El Tayeb (Egy) 3-11, 8-11, 14-12, 11-8, 11-7 (67m)
Nouran Gohar staged a remarkable comeback to deny Nour El Tayeb a second US Open title and claim a first for herself.

Tayeb was on fire in the opening game, hitting winners from everywhere, and although Gohar settled, it was Tayeb who pulled clear from 8-all in the second to go two games up.

Gohar led most of the third, but Tayeb saved a game ball and at 11-10 had a match ball, but Gohar saved that and converted on her third attempt.
Tayeb led 5-1 in the fourth, but Gohar fought back to level the match, then pulled away in the latter part of the decider, jumping for joy on the winning point.

“I can’t believe it,” said Gohar, who after today’s victory, will go to World No.2 in next month’s World Rankings.
“It was so tough out there, I felt my legs burning and like I was doing court sprints with Nour out there in the first two games. I just tried to hang in there and I didn’t want the crowd to be upset about a bad final match. I was thinking ‘that’s the worst final ever’, but it turns out and I hope it was a good one.
“I was trying to impose my game, but Nour was playing better in the beginning. She studied my game plan really well and she caught me off guard in the China Open as well and she was keeping the same style. I was really nervous and I thought ‘just fight, you didn’t work that hard to just let it go’, so for each point I was just telling myself to fight. I tried to adapt, I knew that my plan wasn’t working and I thought when the opportunity came to just take a risk and see how it goes.
“The crowd was amazing and the best ever, I think even better than an Egyptian crowd! It’s really nice for us to have such a good crowd and it cheers you on when you are down.”

Farag claims number two
[1] Ali Farag (Egy) 3-0 [2] Mohamed ElShorbagy (Egy) 11-4, 11-7, 11-2 (40m)

Top seed Ali Farag claimed his second U.S Open title as he overcame three-time and defending champion Mohamed ElShorbagy in straight games.
Farag was on top from the start, and even though there were some brutal rallies in the opening game, it was Farag who was winning them, ElShorbagy making a number of errors.
Farag tkept the momentum in the second and the third was over quickly as ElShorbagy’s challenge faded.

“It feels amazing,” said 27-year-old Farag afterwards.
“To be winning not only a major, but the U.S. Open which is one of the most prestigious tournaments we have on the calendar, it feels amazing. It’s a good day for the family, I can’t be too disappointed but there is no-one I hate more in this building than Nouran Gohar right now! I’m kidding, both Nouran and Nour played an amazing match and how squash should be played.
“Obviously I’m very proud with how I played as well, Mohamed has had an unbelievable start to the season, to be unbeaten in 12 matches in a row – I was one of the victims – to get the win today feels amazing.
“Every court is different, it was quite bouncy, Mohamed played with a smart strategy today. I’ve said before that I’m at my most comfortable when Mike [Way] is around, we set a game plan and I’m glad I stuck with it.”

Semis: ElShorbagy into a fifth

[2] Mohamed ElShorbagy (Egy) 3-0 [3] Tarek Momen (Egy) 11-8, 11-9, 11-3 (44m)
Mohamed ElShorbagy kept his impressive record in Philadelphia - and this season - going as he beat compatriot Tarek Momen in straight games to reach a fifth US Open final.
The match was similar to yesterday’s semis as ElShorbagy got the better of two tough opening games before easing through the third.

“Me and Tarek have had lots of tough battles this year,” said 28-year-old ElShorbagy.
“We have already played twice in the same week and we are probably going to play so many times this season. We had a tough match in San Fran and today was a bit different with different conditions. Winning that second game made a huge difference for me to be 2-0 up.
“I’m really happy to be off in three and playing Ali tomorrow, he has had a really good run here and with how many matches he has had, I had to make sure that I won in three if I was going to get through today.

“You had to win the rally many times before you won the point. Patience was the key today and I think I was a little bit more patient than him.
“It would mean so much to have a shot at winning the U.S. Open title for the fourth time, but I’m up against the best player in the world right now. I’m after him and I want his ranking, but right now he had an unbelievable season last season and I think it’s fitting that the first Platinum tournament of the season we have the World No.1 and No.2 in the final and hopefully it’s a good match in front of everyone.”

Gohar on fire to reach first final

[3] Nouran Gohar (Egy) 3-0 [2] Camille Serme (Fra) 11-4, 11-6, 11-4 (24m)
In a performance reminiscent of the British Open final earlier this year, Egypt’s Nouran Gohar powered he way to a three-nil demolition of Camille Serme, the 2016 champion who had looked so impressive in reaching the semis.

But Gohar was just unplayable tonight, her power game proving too much for Serme as she stormed ahead in all three game to reach the US Open final for the first time.
“I looked at the semi-final lineup and saw all the others had been US Open Champions, I thought I was in the wrong place!
“Hopefully I can do it tomorrow! I’m just really happy to be on court, I had a solo practice this morning and there are some days when you are feeling good and you are very excited to be one court and today was one of those days. It really helped against someone who is very precise, accurate and tactical like Camille. She beat me last time at home, which was really painful and it was great today.

“You work really hard throughout the whole season for days like this when you are feeling great on court and I’m really happy about it. I’m just going to relax today and forget about it because tomorrow is a new day.
“Nour is the player to beat. She has been chopping everyone now and she’s playing really well. I’m excited about tomorrow’s match, I think it will be a great one with a lot of contrast. She likes to slow it down and plays really good shots, I like to hit hard so it’s going to be interesting and challenging, but I’m looking forward to it.”
