Thoughts on the match - 8/6/23 - USA v. Sweden

-Cruel that the US played their best match of the tournament and had to go out this way but it wasn’t good enough and we’ve known that since it started. Not shocked by the loss but still brutal.

-An inch saved us against Portugal and killed us against Sweden. Cruel.

-Vlatko should be unemployed tomorrow.

-Pinoe couldn’t have been worse. Alex struggled in this system but she’s still able to turn nothing into something in a way that Pinoe hasn’t done for a long time. To let her take a penalty after she whiffed 4 set piece opportunities is unbelievable. Truly terrible.

-Sonnett coming in and solving the midfield issues as a DM was not on my bingo card but it was incredible. She was the player of the match for me.

-Not sure if the Rodman change was due to her being sick or not but if it was tactical, it was a mistake.

-Alex doesn’t get enough credit for her defense off the ball. She wins back possession so often and you lose those chances when you take her out. Pinoe looks like she’s on skates trying to pressure the back line and all it does is make her chase, get tired and hope someone in the midfield gets it back.

-Mewis’ first touch of the game being a made PK was baller.

-Ertz alluding to this being her last game in the USA shirt broke my heart in a way I wasn’t prepared for. I will genuinely miss watching her on the field so much.

To sum it up, this World Cup hurt. We needed tactical changes that the coaches weren’t willing to make. The world has caught up and the talent just isn’t going to do it anymore. Heartbroken for the gals. Guess I should thank Vlatko that I don’t have to wake up at 4am anymore.

Thoughts on the match: USA v. POR - 8/1/23

-Not good enough. Hate to pile on with all the negativity they’re going to be experiencing but truly not one good performance by anyone on the field tonight.

-I can’t believe Vlatko is going to die on the hill of putting 3 numbers 9s in the forward line and expecting them to create their own chances. That’s an unrealistic system that is clearly not working yet he is hell bent on sticking to it.

-Never thought I’d see the day where I’d be begging to bring Jill Ellis back but here we are. The most impressive thing Vlatko had done as USWNT coach is make me miss my arch nemesis.

-I also can’t believe I’m agreeing with my second arch nemesis (Carli) that these players don’t seem to be serious about this tournament. To be smiling and laughing after a result like that is wild to me. I’m not saying they should be devastated but after a loss like that, I’d expect every player to be back in the locker room as quickly as possible. Prep for the next match starts at the final whistle of the current one. And they have a lot of work to do.

-Personnel-wise: Ertz has to move into the midfield. There’s no one in the midfield that can maintain possession or play strong. We have 3 number 9s up front that are useless without service and if we’re not going to have width up front the only way to get them the ball is through the midfield. Cook would be fine in a center back spot, especially with a defensive 6 in Ertz.

-Overall: that was as bad as it could’ve been and I don’t think it’s going to get better. But we go again. See you guys Sunday.

THOUGHTS ON THE MATCH THAT NO ONE ASKED FOR: 7/26/23 - NED vs. USA —— haven’t done this in a while

-How many throw-ins did we turn into turnovers tonight? Emily Fox had at least 4 that I recall. That is a simple, fundamental part of this game. You just can’t throw the ball to the other team.

-Horan scoring seconds after her most combative altercation on the field I’ve ever seen is the shit dreams are made of. What a legend to scream at a player, get scolded by the referee and then bang one into the net. Baller.

-Soph Smith and Rodman are incredible players but there’s one thing I wish they did better: not quitting on a contested ball. Trinity was a bit better about getting physical and winning the ball but for Sophia (in the first half only, she brought it in the second) it felt like if the ball didn’t land at her feet she wasn’t going to turn it into a chance. That’s the best thing about Alex as a forward is if the ball is in a 10 yd radius of her she’s breaking down the door to get to it. I hope they start battling a bit more up top.

-I don’t know what it is about Trinity but I like her attitude. She gave Van De Donk a good shove after the Horan blowup and it felt like she was sticking up for her teammate Amy Lepeilbit style. IYKYK.

-The midfield is lost without Rose and Sam Mewis. Demello was scrappy in the first half but committed too many fouls without coming up with the ball. Once Rose subbed on it was a different game.

-Girma has ice in her veins. She seems so unbothered when the opposing strikers are running her down.

OVERALL: not a great performance but I hope we learn and move on.

Boosting this for pride month! I love being a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Update: I’m still very happily in my first relationship at 25 years old and I’m so in love it makes my chest hurt sometimes. I’m late to work everyday because I can’t stop looking at her.
