This is random but I’ve been seeing people complain about the refs in the NWSL for a long time and are baffled as to why Chesky still has a job, and I actually have an explanation for this. First of all there’s a nation wide referee shortage, so the league will take any ref that’s available, even if it’s someone like chesky. Part of why there’s a shortage is due to how difficult it is to become a ref, which has to be done through the USSF. It requires a ton of testing, fees, and months of field training, and this is just for the first rank out of 7, aka grassroots. Plus the pay for refs is ass, it can be something like $200 per game depending on where they work.

And here’s why the league has refereeing problems in general: a ref moves up the ranks based on experience and of course quality. Once a person makes it to the 4th rank, they are eligible for refereeing NWSL matches. To referee an MLS match, a ref must be at rank 7. So basically the NWSL gets people that don’t have that much experience and are mediocre at best at refereeing in general. Chesky is probably at a rank 5 if I had to guess considering her experience, but since her quality is poor she hasn’t moved up to a 6
