It also feels really good to be a Treasure Chest fan. This episode more or less highlighted a low of the flaws he had: people pleasing(trying to help both Cup and Bottle), immense guilt(he felt bad for letting them both down and apologized profusely),poor communication skills(not telling Cup and Bottle why he was going back and forth) and unintentional insensitivity(thinking that borrowing Plasma Ball's sword would be a good idea). Treasure Chest doesn't work well under pressure and it really shows this episode.

His guilt in particular is so severe he genuinely thinks MALACHITE hates him. I'm surprised he didn't list Ukulele among one of the others he let down considering his bickering with Journal is what pushed her to leave.

With this being shown on full display, it does look like there is set up for Treasure Chest working through his shit to at least make things right with Journal by the end of the season. Maybe even clear things up with Ukulele and Malachite? I do like how Bottle has learned from her mistakes enough to help Treasure Chest out. Maybe Treasure Chest can get to a point where he can do the same for her? Who knows?

It also confirms that Treasure Chest really did value Journal a lot as a team member. Journal's contributions did help his team out in cases where they would have otherwise failed so it's not hard to see why. ....Okay... Maybe it is just the Journalchest shipper in me..

Melon gijinka!!

Onto the other rejects! I have already done Shuriken and Mirror at this point.

Unlike most of the other previous players, I actually had an idea for Melon’s season 1 from the start. Melon’s season 1 and 2 designs are based on the concept of rags-to-riches. He starts off as a humble, laid-back farmer. When he gets a hold of the money however, the fame gets to his head and he begins wearing “fancier” clothing to show off his newfound status. The outfits also lend themselves into some fun fruit imagery. Farmers harvest fruits, but they are also seen as a sign of prosperity and even royalty for some.

I just realized I didn’t bring this up in Malachite’s post, so I’ll explain it here: Melon has animal-esque features because I had this idea that objects based in nature would have limbs to adapt to their surroundings. For this guy in particular, he’s actually based on the watermelon beetle! It’s ironic, since they eat foliage and are considered pests.

Fridge Object Head gijinka

It's the runner up to season 1!

Since Fridge is a relatively laid-back and chill guy, I decided to opt for something simple and modest. Those two words aren’t what I would use to describe how the process went, however. I actually struggle a lot when it comes to designing more “relaxed” clothing. As said in my design process for Bottle, I don’t really like to use certain clothes as a catch-all for a certain idea(ex. Hoodies for a reclusive character). It was such a pain to figure out how to implement simple clothing with the more complicated snowflake motif. It wasn’t until I sketched out Melon’s drawing when it hit me: I should go for a winter themed take on a summer themed outfit. And that’s what I did.

His simplistic style is meant to be a contrast to Melon’s and show how they both handled their victories: Fridge stayed the chill, humble man he is, while Melon became more haughty. Fridge is themed around winter, while Melon is themed around summer. I like to think Fridge has vacation shirts with all sorts of patterns, and he alternates from episode to episode.

I also gave him a wheelchair as part of my headcanon that Mr. Hand crippled him in the season 1 finale.

Toothbrush Gijinka

Anyone who has seen my older gijinka designs has noticed that Bottle used to wear a sweater vest rather than the tank top she wears now. You can thank Toothbrush for that! I don’t remember if I brought this up in my design process for Bottle, but I changed the design because I came up with it on the spot and felt I could have done better. That and I watched season 1 later and found out that Toothbrush would pair nicely with a more academic fit. As I said before, I don’t really like repeating outfits for characters unless there is a purpose to it, so changes had to be made. Even then, I decided to give Toothbrush a regular vest in the end. I saw those images of intricate patterns on vests and it reminded me of toothpaste swirls… So here we are.

The idea was pretty straightforward: she enjoys reading, is very amiable, and occasionally reprimands insolent or odd behaviors. Definite bookworm material. And she isn’t even a book herself! Ahahaha…. Anyone who has been reading these notes has also noticed that the designs I struggle with the most tend to be the extreme ends of the formal-casual spectrum. Toothpaste was one of those cases.

One of the biggest struggles was trying to implement the motif in a way that was recognizable while also avoiding clutter. I contemplated giving her leg warmers to try to further evoke the “toothpaste tube” look, but then I remembered I gave Shuriken leg warmers for his main outfit. Oops. Another was balancing the colors to not make them look too tacky. I’m real proud of how it turned out.
