Sooo are we going to talk about the fact that , somehow despite being centered around a book critiquing classism , the outsiders fandom has a HUGE classism problem?

Are we going to talk about how people like Ponyboy , Dallas , Darrel , Soda, Steve , Johnny, and Keith (yes, I used their real names) exist in real life and you literally pass them on the street everyday and would judge them without a second thought?

Are we going talk about the fact that most of you would be terrified to drive in their neighborhood?

I've lived in houses that look just like the Curtis house, and hell, even my parents would've told me to stay away from kids like that.

Are we going to talk about the fact that a lot of people do not understand or choose to ignore that even if the Curtis parents had lived , they would still be in poverty?

Darrel was never going to college; he got an athletic scholarship and it still wasn't enough. The only reason he thinks Pony could go is that good academic scholarships are usually a full ride or pretty close to it.

Are we going to talk about the fact that a lot of people view Darrel as the "good one" because both Pony and Keith align him with Socs , forgetting that he still does illegal things like drinking and going to rumbles with everyone else.

Are we going to talk about the fact that a lot of you can only empathize with the characters through your attraction to the actors (musical fans included)?

Are we going to address the fact that a lot of people think of soc kids as upper middle class and not the wealthy nepo babies they truly are? Again, Darrel couldn't go to school with the athletic scholarship, and he's shown to be a better athlete than Paul...but Paul's in college, and he isn't.

The Socs and the greasers are not on equal economic playing fields. They are not even in the same stadium. It's not as simple as differing aesthetics. Sherry Valance is a 16-year-old with her own Corvette, and the Curtis house is sometimes the only way the boys get food.

I'm not saying the pressures of capitalism don't harm the Soc kids too, but most of it is psychological. The gang is literally fighting and working to LIVE. The socs are attacking the greasers based on prejudice and entitlement.

This fandom, funnily enough, in the same way Ponyboy does in the beginning of the book, aligns being a soc with "being good".

It's why, regardless of the gender of the reader, so many fics have a soc self insert reader. It's not the whole "rebel x rule follower" thing y'all try to make it. The soc kids are also doing illegal shit and being just as violent and reckless, it's just dismissed because they're rich.

(Also, side note: greaser is a slur, even when Sherry says it Pony kind of cringes, it's not something that could be said/ interpreted with fondness coming from a soc partner)

Even with creating original characters, more often than not, there's a weird emphasis on their class, and it's rare that it's the same as the gang.

Even if the reader is supposed to be related to one of them!

And if the reader is explicitly feminine?

I think I've read 3 fics out of HUNDREDS where she isn't a soc or described with this dainty, wealth-adjacent, very overtly white kind of femininity, that is viewed as more "innocent" or "good" or "in need of protecting," and it's fucking weird.

And obviously, this isn't a problem with everyone in the fandom. And I'm not perfect either, like I said, I was also taught to try and avoid people who were viewed as a lower class than me or "bad" people. But I've also tried to unpack a lot of that. (But like I said, I'm not perfect, no amount of unpacking can change the indisputable fact that if I ever met a Keith Two-Bit Mathews, he would get on my very last nerve).

TLDR: I love this fandom and it can be really fun, but in people's habit of wanting to just turn their brain off and have fun and simp over characters (which isn't inherently bad), they have a tendency to perpetuate the very thing S.E. Hinton was criticizing.

Speaking as a survivor of child sex abuse: the world would be a lot better if yall spent less time talking about the ways in which pedophiles should be punished and more time supporting survivors and preventing abuse

I get it, punishment can feel cathartic. I’ve certainly spent time imagining all the ways in which my own abuser might be punished. But ultimately, him dying, or being jailed, or publicly shamed, isn’t actually going to help me nor will it stop more kids from getting hurt in the future.

I don’t want more prisoners. I want free therapy with trauma informed counselors. I want better sex education for young children that teaches them about consent and body autonomy. And I want a society in which I can openly discuss my trauma, or at least as openly as yall discuss the evils of pedophiles

What if Ponyboy never stayed gold? He just sorta suppressed everything for later. He stopped arguing with Darry because he just said sorry and then went to bed angry. He put his anger, sadness, and grief aside and kept doing his homework because "It'll go away eventually". Ponyboy acted like everything was okay until it wasn't. Maybe it was a bad grade and then Darry asking Pony if he was okay because Soda told Darry how Pony seemed off. Maybe there was an argument. Maybe Soda stepped in but went against Ponyboy which made him madder. After that, he started to do bad stuff just because he could. Staying out later, smoking even more, hanging with the bad kids, and letting himself slip because Johnny can't tell him to keep who he was gold. It got worse when he thought of Dallas. He'd think of Dally while getting ready for school. Dally never really did school, so why should he? Pony starts cutting classes even more. Darry and Soda catch onto it and really try to get Pony back to himself. They really tried to get Pony to open up and speak up but he doesnt. He isnt the same after the fire, and losing the people he loved.
