He doesn’t😔. He doesn’t know how to make friends or what exactly constitutes as “being friends” so he just ends up in a place or gets put into a group and exists there until he either moves on naturally or gets adopted by some merciful friendly person or preexisting friend group.

And then once this happens he’ll do nothing but refer to said merciful people as acquaintances and/or coworkers if anyone asks because he’s weird and is stressed out by the idea of being close to or getting attached to people.

Does not put his charisma score to any sort of use whatsoever and is the most awkward person alive when it comes to interpersonal relationships.

How does your OC make friends?

A pristine, untouched pool has been discovered 700 feet (213 meters) below ground in Lechuguilla Cave, New Mexico, one of the world’s largest and most famous caves. This “virgin” pool, entirely untouched by humans, lies deep within a cave system renowned for its immense depth and towering chambers.

Scientists have described the pool as “completely pristine,” highlighting the unique bacteria in its waters that are believed to have evolved without any human interference. Surrounded by white frosted rock, the pool has an almost otherworldly appearance. Although its water seems to have a creamy, murky tint, this is merely an optical illusion.

i love when a character has something terrible happen to them and as a result they see themself as, essentially if not literally, a ghost. and so that means they only can (and have to) do what ghosts do, ie get revenge and then cease to exist. easy as that. but then halfway through this ghost vengeance they realize hey actually i might still be a human person. with human needs. that’s incredibly inconvenient, considering how much i’ve invested in this whole ghost thing

If things get violent, where is your character?

Vaal is a dragonborn, which are classified as a “rare” race in Faerûn, so in most cases he does come off as looking strange/unusual. He’s pretty often the only dragonborn around in a lot of the places we visit as a party, and that’s been the case for most of his life since he didn’t grow up in a big city (any along the sword coast for example) where populations are very diverse.

Travel/work/living wise this hasn’t really impacted him too badly, as most people in Faerûn are used to seeing all sorts of people of different species/races. Racism does exist but he really hasn’t experienced much of it (the only person to person incident to occur so far was more directed at his drow party member Vienna, and the only systematic incident was experienced by the entire party (non-humans not being allowed into the city of Hillsfar)), though this could simply be due to the fact that he’s both very large and very intimidating, so maybe people who might take issue with him choose to keep it to themselves.

The most major effect is just the fact that he grew up disconnected from his culture and never really had anyone around, other than his own siblings, who looked like him or spoke his native language. People in his life often have trouble reading his facial expressions and body language if he doesn’t compensate by emoting differently or more dramatically (he does use this to his advantage often when it comes to deception and intimidation, but it’s still a pain to deal with otherwise). And he rarely has opportunities to talk to people in draconic despite it being his favored language as well as the one he’s most proficient and literate in, which he does struggle with as he’s not particularly literate or well spoken in common.

These things, combined with other factors, have lead to him feeling frustrated and isolated pretty often when it comes to socializing.

If your OC looks strange or unusual for their setting, what is it that sets them apart? How does this different appearance impact them?

Vaal deals with chronic migraines from an old, nearly fatal head injury. Of course magical healing exists in the forgotten realms but the injury in question sat unattended to for a while before he was healed, and the healing was done by a self taught novice magic user who was casting the spell in a panic. It worked and he lived but the healing was imperfect, leaving him with some issues with his memory and migraines.

Mainly, they are triggered by further head injuries (of course) despite all of his further injuries being healed correctly, and stress. Both of these are problematic for him since his line of work has him being stressed and injured often, and very little can be done about it. On top of that, he's acquired superior darkvision via a special warlock pact with the god Vhaeraun, which has made him somewhat light sensitive, and more prone to the migraines on very bright days.

He's gotten very used to dealing with discomfort and pain (often to his own detriment), and usually just does his best to ignore/push through it. Fortunately for him, his lay on hands ability does bring a good deal of relief when needed.
