rather than rehashing the entire plot of the book, this headcanon list is just of some fun character points and interactions that i personally would have put into this story if i ever found the motivation to write it

The wedding that nico and will both go to at the beginning of the book is jason’s and he’s getting married to reyna (bear with me)

nico’s best friend is percy, who is technically his cousin but is not recognized by the crown bc he’s illegitimate 

percy uses his “allowance” from his dad to do charity stuff which gives him and nico reasons to travel all over the world for promotional stuff

nico came out to bianca when he was younger, and then later came out to persephone, who was like “oh sweety thank you for telling me but let’s keep this between us bc your father would Not be happy to hear this” so that gets nico Worried

will spends half of his time trying to decide what to Do with his life, bc he wants to help people but he doesn’t know how, and bc he was raised by a politician he kind of thinks that his only options are politician or lawyer

obv he realizes by the end that being a doctor is actually what he wants to do and starts applying to medical schools

will also assumes he’s straight up until this point in his life and then after kissing nico one (1) time he panics and goes to magnus and has a deep feelings conversation where he realizes he’s bi

when annabeth finds out later that will and nico are together she’s like “you told MAGNUS but not ME?” and will’s like “bc magnus is bi!!” and annabeth’s like “SO AM I”

newsflash asshole nico’s been in love with will the entire time

There’s that scene in the book where nico and will would go to talk to hades about making their relationship official and public but right before then jason starts screaming at nico for being an idiot

but we don’t believe in homophobic jason in this house so the conversation actually goes something like: 

jason: you could’ve just hid the fact that youre gay

nico: thats what ive been doing and it sucks

jason: well try harder next time why do you think i got married to reyna??? bc her and thalia are in love but weren’t allowed to go public with it

and nicos like thats cool and all but that still sounds Miserable

when they DO talk to hades, nico finds out that his father knew Nothing about him being gay and he’s actually very accepting, which means that persephone had lied to him about all of it, so there goes all that trust straight out the window

will gets accepted to medical school in new york and nico decides that he wants to follow in percy’s footsteps with all the charity stuff so he uses his royal allowance to start an lgbt youth shelter or something in new york, and if he wants to keep an eye on the place then i guess he’ll have to live in new york at least part time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Will was seventeen when his mom became the president of the United States, and there were some things that he hated.

He hated moving out of his childhood home in Texas, even if it was incredibly cool that he got to live in the White House. He hated having to transfer schools for his last semester of high school (and had begged Naomi for the months leading up to her inauguration to let him finish school online). (She didn’t go for it.) He hated that they’d all been too busy with campaigning and then packing and then moving, and that when Will finally got his driver’s license, it said DC instead of Austin.

But everything else, well. That was all really cool. 

When they moved into the White House, back when Will felt like he had more reasons to feel bummed out than anything, he made himself a list. He liked making lists. They helped him relax, and they helped remind him of what was important - homework that was due the next day, or cities that they were visiting along the campaign trail. During the first year of his mother’s presidency, he made a new list. A list of every good and awesome and okay thing there was about being the First Son of the United States. 

First and foremost, Naomi had made history. In 2016, a female Democrat from the great state of Texas reached over 300 votes by the electoral college, and she had done it all without a husband by her side. And Will wasn’t going to let himself be upset about moving schools while his mother made history.

And point one, subsection A, there were now a good handful of states separating them from Will’s father.

His two best friends - Annabeth and Magnus Chase, daughter and nephew-turned-adopted-son of Vice President Frederick Chase. Annabeth had been helping her father’s campaign since she was old enough to speak, and had been crucial to Naomi’s ascent to the White House. Magnus had always been there to share his weed whenever Will got anxious. (The media had dubbed the three of them The White House Trio because they’d been so active in their parents’ campaign.) (Sometimes The Golden Trio, but that was usually more mocking.)

The three of them had all become something of minor celebrities. Sure, they were no Kardashians, but they got invited to events. The only event that Will could remember attending that wasn’t entirely political was his junior prom. 

They traveled - all over the world! Will was pretty sure he had no reason to tag along to some of the places that his mom went, but he’d barely left Texas before the campaign started. 

He got to meet so many amazing people. There were doctors who cured cancer and lawyers who fought for justice and so many people out in the world that wanted to help. Will had gotten teary eyed on more than one flight back to DC after some visits to different youth shelters across the country. 

Oh, and did he mention the plane? The private jet that he got to fly in? He’d never flown before, and he knew that Air Force One had definitely gotten him spoiled for air travel ever again.

He was going to meet royalty. 

His newest addition to the list was scribbled out in a rush after his mother announced that they would be attending the Olympics in Rio - and Will got to choose which events they got to see! (Well, some of them.) (Okay, he got to pick one, because they were only going to be there for a day or two.)

His choice was clear to him in an instant. He knew from some light social media stalking - he was a teenager who was suddenly famous, he didn’t know how things worked yet - that there was supposed to be a special guest at the soccer fields. And he knew exactly who that special guest would be. 

The Prince of England.

He had always known for as long as he could remember - for as long as he’d known what royalty was - that there was a prince about his age. There had been a girl in Will’s third grade class who had once told him that she was going to marry the prince and become a princess, and then someday, a queen. Well, Will didn’t want to rule a country. He was just on the hunt for a new friend.

And how cool would it be to have the Prince of England as a friend?

Suck it, Molly, Will couldn’t help but think as he, Annabeth, and Magnus wandered around the VIP area at the soccer fields. They were so high up above the stands that he didn’t understand how anybody could see anything that was happening in the game, but he figured it didn’t matter, since he wasn’t there to watch, anyway. He was there to search. 

“You know, chances of finding him here are ridiculously low,” Annabeth pointed out, not for the first time, as they started another lap around the stadium. “A prince is going to have a huge security detail, even bigger than ours, and everyone in this section is so surrounded by buff guys in suits that--” 

“And girls,” Magnus cut in.

“What?” 

“Guys and girls,” Magnus told her. “Or, sorry, women. Half of our security team is female, you can’t generalize like that.” 

Annabeth elbowed him and rolled her eyes. “Oh, whatever. You knew what I meant. And the point I was trying to make is that--” She cut herself off when she walked straight into Will’s unmoving form. “Will?” 

“That’s him,” Will whispered, eyes glued on a boy his age, standing beside a single bodyguard. 

Prince Nico was shorter than Will by a few inches, and was wearing a well-tailored black suit, as always. He tended to look like he was either on his way to a funeral, or on coming back from one. He stood with perfect posture, his pale hands clasped behind his back, though the way he held himself made Will think he wanted to lean over the rail to get a closer look at the game. Will knew he’d be here somewhere. Nico loved soccer. 

“I’m gonna go say hi,” Will mumbled, ignoring Magnus’s, “Maybe you shouldn’t--” because he was already walking. 

His first word to Nico was, “Um,” and then, “Hi, um, Your Highness.” 

Nico looked unimpressed. There was a pout to his lips and a coolness to his eyes that he never showed to the camera. (No, not coolness. Coldness.) 

“I’m Will,” he continued, unable to stop the words now that they’d already started, and he held out a hand. Nico didn’t take it. “Um. Will Solace, I’m the--” 

“I know who you are,” Nico told him. His voice was quiet, yet held commanding authority. Will wondered if that was something he’d learned alongside table manners and perfect posture. That authority in his voice was giving off a vibe of quit bothering me.

While Nico had clearly trained his tongue well, Will had never learned how to shut up. “You do?” he asked with a bright, genuine smile - he still hadn’t perfected a fake smile for the cameras - and looking at it seemed to cause Nico pain. “That’s… That’s crazy! I mean, I’m, like, a total nobody compared to you. Anyway, it’s nice to meet you! Can I hang around and watch the game with you?” 

Nico’s head turned back toward the field below, and Will took that as a yes, until he heard a whisper from beside him, voice accented in that way that nobody’s but Nico’s was: “Can you get rid of him?” 

Will’s heart plummeted. 

Thankfully, he didn’t get the opportunity to react (though he wouldn’t have minded a chance to apologize) before Annabeth was tugging on his arm. Above the thoughts suddenly swirling in his head, he thought he heard Annabeth saying, “Sorry, Your Highness, he didn’t mean to intrude,” before he was dragged away. 

They started back around the stadium, returning to their starting point - something of a suite that had been reserved for the US president and her guests. 

As he flopped down onto an empty couch, Will added one more item to the list of things he hated: Nico di Angelo.

cue nico wandering around in a grocery store with an infant, grumbling to her about her stupid father who forgot to buy diapers. will, another customer in the store, has been watching nico complain about how difficult it was to find the diapers as he walked right past them again and again. eventually will tries to be helpful by pointing them out and says something like “new dad? your baby is pretty cute” to which nico replies “no, she’s not mine” and does not elaborate. this is not as reassuring as he thinks it is. will lets him know. 

nico starts complaining to will because this is the first person he’s seen aside from his “roommates” in a couple of weeks and he seems a little too friendly for his own good so nico vents past the point of annoyance (to most people. will thinks he’s cute) 

there’s some flirting in here somewhere, and numbers that get exchanged which leads to some dates, but it’s. very weird to bring a guy home when it’s. not really Your Home. this doesnt stop nico but he realizes his mistake when he’s trying to sneak will out early the next morning, which is, coincidentally, the same time that the baby starts crying, and percy comes out into the hallway just in time to see nico shove a strange man into the bathroom. nico tries to gaslight percy. “i dont know what you’re talking about” and “you’re tired. you’re just seeing things with your tired eyes. you should go back to bed and forget this ever happened”

when nico eventually announces that he’s moving out, percy and annabeth are heartbroken. not because they think they’ll never see nico again. they’re going to miss their live-in babysitter

nico is an intern and will is the trauma attending and nico is basically like the cristina to wills burke but also slightly meredith/derek in the sense that theyre Made For Each Other

nico craves power and thrives to be the best trauma surgeon ever and kinda sleeps with will to get ahead but soon realizes that hes In Love with will and so instead of sneaking around sleeping with him they get,,, a relationship?? which is wild for nico but will is all for it bc now he gets to make nico flustered in public

and now for all that useless backstory i always get so maria and hades were both great surgeons until maria died and hades just kinda,, stopped but nico still spent most of his childhood in a hospital and bianca became a surgeon around the time that nico graduated high school (so big age difference) and then died in some accident before nico graduated med school so at least now everyone remembers the name di angelo bc bia was p great too so they have high expectations for nico bc of his family and also hazel shows up eventually (like lexie) and shes also a surgeon ((wills backstory is that hes a southern boy raised by his mom and abandoned by his dad who was also a surgeon and probably couldve gotten will into a better school and a better hospital at the start but will wanted to pave his own way and changed his name to solace so that there was no connection to his dad))

nico and leo and other interns are eating lunch and theyre talking about what they saw that day and what attendings they were with and somehow it gets to like “”claiming”” which attending is theirs like theyre claiming specialties and somebody mentions percy and nicos like peds is a challenge and man is he hot but i think chase already beat us to him and someone else says zhang and nicos like “ortho?? u can have him” and so leos like “fine who do you want then” and nico says “solace” with no elaboration until they push him and he says that solace is soft and easily manipulated and screwing him would be the easy way to get extra lessons or w.e plus hes hot and definitely not 100% straight,, and theyre all like “yeah whatever nobodys actually gonna sleep with anybody we’re just picking specialties whats wrong with you” so nicos like fine u wanna bet? ill ask him out by the end of the week

nicos sitting at the bar across the street and will comes up to him and asks if he can buy nico a drink (shot of tequila) and nicos like “but youre my attending” and wills like “its one drink” and this is where nico gets manipulative and will mentions that hes noticed nico watching him all week and will’s requested that nico be on his service soon so that he can watch a lot closer and all the flirting leads to them sleeping together and driving to work together the next morning despite the fact that nico has to be there so much earlier than will for rounds and when nicos changing into his scrubs somebody points out the hickey on his chest and nicos like “oh yeah i slept with solace last night,, he even requested i be on his service so wheels are in motion and i’ll leave you all in my dust in no time” and then he leaves for rounds

will brings nico coffees and kisses his cheek all the time and they eat lunch together sometimes when nico isnt eating with the other interns and its all seeming much less manipulatey and a whole lot more datey so they call nico out on it but he waves them off bc no way he doesnt actually like will hes just trying to get ahead and did he mention that he got to close on will’s surgery today? until will drags nico into an on call room one day and hugs him and kisses him and talks about losing a patient and nico realizes that wills not defenselessly soft but actually still pretty tough and wills like “ok theres no use crying over this more lets go to the skills lab and ill show u what i did bc im still ur teacher too right” 

wills sitting around in the attendings lounge with frank and percy and reyna and theyre picking on will for dating an intern bc nicos obviously just using him for extra lessons or w.e and wills like “no hes not” and theyre all like uhhh yeah he is?? And wills like “well what about annabeth?? dont yall think shes using percy for stuff??” and frank and reyna laugh but percy doesnt get it and reynas like “i was talking to him yesterday and when i asked him about you he talked strictly about the medicine and nothing about you” and percy says “yeah annabeth heard him talking to the other interns about how much he was getting out of your relationship” and will gets pouty and hes like “no way yall just misheard him or something that can’t be right” and frank is like “stop offering him extra lessons and see if he sticks around” and wills like “i dont like this conversation anymore”  but he doesnt bring it up to nico

will ends up ignoring nico for a few days and feels terrible about it and one day he sees nico sitting with his head in his hands so will calls out to him and nico stands up and immediately passes out and will flips out (nicos appendix burst) and nico gets rushed into surgery and will’s at his bedside when he wakes up

nicos pretty out of it and pumped full of pain medicine and nico tells will that he has to tell him something and says that he was manipulating will bc hes soft but he doesnt want to manipulate will anymore bc he likes will like, a lot bc hes pretty and funny and nice and soft but not soft in a bad way,, and will just tells him to sleep and he’ll be there when nico wakes up and then when nico wakes up for real will kisses him says “so i hear you’ve been manipulating me for extra lessons” and nicos like “uhh idk what youre talking about” and wills like “i caught on but dont worry im not mad bc i know you how u really feel” and will lets nico suffer for a second before he smiles and tells nico what he said to will before and nicos like “youre a jerk” and wills like “a jerk you like” 

flash to the future and nicos in his kitchen in his pajama pants and hes standing at the island with a suture kit practicing on bananas or something and will comes up behind him and wraps his arms around nico and asks whats going on and nico says hes practicing for his solo surgery but he cant get this one stitch right and will should help him and wills like “or i could help you relax a little bit” and starts kissing nicos neck and shoulder and nicos like “cmon i have to practice” and wills like “call this practice working with distractions” and nicos like “i dont think these are the kinds of distractions i’ll be facing”
