and the days go by and “do we really have the budget to fly someone in right now?” becomes “we need the best forger and the thief around, so eames is my only recommendation”.

days go by and “I’m sure we can do without the baby-faced-tag-along-to-cobb” disappears in to “either you agree to arthurs price or I walk out”.

long before the first kiss, first sex or even before the first civiliazed conversation between them.

and it sticks. so they understand when the other insists on not coming to bed to pour over some more documents or missing out on dinners for some more practise runs. they get it why and how the reputation comes. so it sticks.

it almost fades away when one refuses to come back to an empty bed the other has left for a reason that has nothing to do with a job. it almost rusts when one hears how the other frequents a somnacin den which really isn’t needed for any test runs. almost.

but as the music kicks, two layers apart, one knows the other has taken care of all of them and fought off an entire army and the other knows that their mark has been incepted without a single hitch in the plan, and they press on. as the world goes up in flames they close their eyes and open them knowing that may be, may be the days long gone by could come by again.

Eames doesn’t look like he’s sorry. He puts his cigarette out in a long-dead potted plant on the windowsill, blind, almost knocking it over. “Tell me the truth, Arthur – how bloody long?” “Nine years,” Arthur says flatly. Because why the hell not, at this point. Eames stares, and stares. Arthur looks away. He knows what he must look like – face puffy from sleep, hair a fucking mess, bangs curling over his forehead in clothes that are too big, wildly unprofessional. For six years Eames has been angling for a casual fuck and Arthur’s been nursing the open wound of loving him like a fucking teenager with a crush – it’s pathetic. The indignity is astonishing. “Nine years,” Eames echoes, after a long time. “And I was – with you.”
