Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was born Princess Elizabeth of York on 21 April 1926 in London. As a young royal, countless images of the Queen were captured – from her first years to the earliest moments of her royal duties.
At the time of this portrait (c.1933), Elizabeth’s grandfather, George V, was king. Her own father, the future King George VI, would have been unaware of the dramatic changes to come – in 1936 Edward VIII abdicated, setting in motion a new line of succession.
Here we see a happy Princess of York, captured away from ceremonial life. Many of our works present the Queen in a formal manner, however this snapshot offers a fascinating insight into a more intimate moment – capturing the young princess’s ‘merry smile’.
