Been a while.
Not as great of a summer compared to 2020. Phone stolen plus a hefty phone bill from the theif was a damper. Going over a month without a SIM card in this day and age was wild.
But have been getting back into hiking and baseball - which is good. Cannot wait for this pandemic to be over but society as a whole really is getting dumber so not getting out of this anytime soon.
But I’d love to wrong!

If we are honest - not a whole lot has been happening in Europe in 2021 in terms of blog-worthy posts.
You eat, sleep, work - with some workouts, reading, and Netflix in between. Not much more than that!
I‘ve been trying to hike the past couple weeks and we started baseball practice (name a more socially distant sport...) but some shoulder inflammation is thwarting that other than going through the motions for the time being.
She got me a sodastream for Valentine’s Day which is rather handy - I would’ve never thought to buy something like this - and it was unexpected but I love it! And the local supermarket has an exchange program for the canisters.
Well... off to an early sleep and hike tomorrow.

Ah it's Independence Day (Brexit).
Power went out for several hours - no idea why. But luckily nothing spoiled and my heat was set at 5/5 - so still toasty! However, the intercom no longer works - a problem for wine and package delivery...
A portion of her gift arrived and it seems like a hit though the main items were back ordered into oblivion so her main ones I was going to order will be birthday ones now.
Looking forward to a boring New Year's Eve. It'll be quieter in the city and an early night! Reading a good book with wine and passing out sounds amazing to me.

So many holidays left, no time (and place) to use them.
Because of the restrictions within Europe, I'm faced with the possibility of an actual stay-cation for the last two weeks of the year. Which would be boring even if I rent a car (chances are - rain).
Places that require quarantine are out of the question. Many others (Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Parts of Portugal) require negative tests prior to boarding. The problem is that labs are saturated between prescroptions, large scal testing, and existing travel requests. So getting your free travel test is basically impossible at the moment to travel. I spend the day refreshing my Mac for an open slot.
I was originally going to go to Sicily but their Christmas and New Year restrictions preclude you from traveling outside of your city (avoid families gathering) - so no hiking or anything. Not worth it for such a beautiful region.
It'a going to be the least planning ever for a holiday if I can get a test to travel. Which is needed! It's been too long (for me). And the need to replace social interaction with outdoor activity is needed. We certainly won't be allowed to gather here over the holidays or have bars open to meet with friends (or even coworkers).
And break from work is much needed...

So bored and in need to burn many holidays. But it's a bit difficult at the moment to use them.
Parents (and her) are asking about birthday presents and I have no idea! I hadn't given it any thought prior to this...
I'm still a bit surprised she didn't return to Europe for graduate school. I had expected that was her plan.
With the elections over, Trump is still trying to be the facist of his dreams. But he will fail.

Rain - Leave!
The below normal weather and wetness is certainly contributing to the resurgence of this virus. No sun and rain crams people indoors.
Yesterday was beautiful, however. Sunny and 17. It's time to get back into a workout routine with travel likely paused for a few weeks.
Apartment search still sucks.

Guess I couldn't stay away long from Greece.
Wrapping up a short holiday to enjoy the sun and warmth and (relative) safety of the country has been great. Visiting a new island is fantastic and greatly exceed expectations. And despite not being a major population center - island life is pretty good.
But must continue to enjoy the sun rather than stay on the phone!

Heading back after a summer in Greece. It's a weird feeling but need to get some items done even though remote work is still for the foreseeable future. Plus, some baseball!
Though I must take advantage and head out again after a couple weeks home. More to come...

Been a while. Escaped to Greece and rented a flat for a while just to be in a new location.
You really cannot beat renting a place in Athens for 400 Euros a month. And that gets you quite a decent place. Sure, some people may find it lonely to have only some bartenders who know your name but I don't mind it. Having the freedom again to wander without a high virus infection rate is great. Having hot weather, the sea, and outdoor sports is great. It's relaxing me time.
That said, I'm not sure why her and I didn't consider Greece when we moved to (and around) Europe. It would've been a good fit for an extended stay. Was it that it's not connected to the rest of the EU by reasonable bus distances? I don't recall our reasoning.
It's something to consider for the future...

Despite increasing new cases, things are still normal. It may be under control but the problem arises when a low population means your per capita caseload exceeds entrance limits for countries you want to visit (Soca Valley, Slovenia). I will have to keep it to major countries it seems this summer - hopefully that doesn't close off.
With no baseball matches in sight, might as well work remotely in Greece so I'm planning that now. But I need to get a new flat which will require me to monitor new construction down the road from where I live.
Her mother is visiting her but unfortunately forgot her birthday gift. It's the most delayed gift in world history. 😅

It's crazy how empty Santorini is! I'm literally the only non-Greek speaking person here...

A cold spell has temporarily come in but it'll be back near thirty this weekend. If I can catch a cheap flight on the 15th when internal EU borders open, I'll do it for two weeks just to work part time in a new place.
She sent me a recipe from the cookbook I got her as a present that I'll try. But this has reminded me - her birthday gift is still unopened at her mothers...

I see that autocorrect has really gone downhill recently. Nevertheless, still exhausted. The rapidness with which I fall asleep recently is not something I'm used to. It's time for a holiday soon.

Restrictions are being lifted and the city is coming to life. Nevertheless, people are still very hesitant to meet. So while things are accessible, boredom still reigns supreme.
Baseball practice however has been great and my arm is in good shape (despite fatigue this week). That is still just once a week only though for the time being due to regulations.
I'll have to maintain reading and such. And with the long weekend perhaps hiking. Monday will be 30 degrees so perhaps that will be the day.
But finally getting a proper haircut rather than your self-cut ones over lockdown feels so good.
Could use the pollen to go away, however. And a trip to the Mediterranean

I am so bored.
My only in-person human interaction in the last 8 weeks has been cashiers at the supermarket and my kebab shop for takeaway down the street.
What is in-person conversation like again?
Besides reading and working out, trying new wines, cleaning, it’s rather limited options at the moment. Need some adventure ASAP. Hopefully deconfinement goes as scheduled so hiking in the country can occur in 1-2 weeks. You can hike now but you have to get there. With no bike, car, and reduced bus network? It’s hard. I’ll urban hike next weekend if need be through the River gorges on the eastern side of the city. At least it’s something!

Well. An insanely busy week at work. Being ready for bed at 11 is not something I’m used to... in a long time.
we got several weeks to go until we get personal freedom that’s not just going to stores. Living alone can get boring at times. It’s been a heavy dose of books and documentaries/podcasts with some daily workouts mixed in. But it’s also been sunny and over 75 routinely for the last couple weeks. Need adventure!
