You have to admit, there is something about her. Like what? She’s young and she’s thin. No, it’s more than that. She has that… Th͟i͟n͟g͟.

I grew up in a quiet suburban town, just north of New York. On special occasions, my dad would take me into the city, and we would get dessert at the Waldorf or the Plaza. I loved watching the people around us. They seemed to have interesting lives. I wanted to be one of them. I wanted to write novels, and speak five languages, and travel. I didn’t want to be ordinary. I wanted to be extraordinary. Margaret Qualley as Joanna Rakoff in My Salinger Year (2020) dir. Philippe Falardeau

growing up, johnny was a victim of sibling abuse. he just never realized it—at least, not until season 5. he spent his whole life brushing it off, chalking it up to brother stuff, convincing himself that whatever benjamin (his brother) did to him was just how things were. but it wasn’t just roughhousing. it wasn’t just a few fights. it was violence. it was torment. & johnny spent years thinking he was the weak one for letting it happen.
he never saw it as abuse because, in his mind, that would mean admitting that someone beat him, that someone broke him. & johnny wasn’t weak. he couldn’t be.
johnny was around 10 years old when the abuse started. benjamin, being his younger brother, was 7 years old at the time. it wouldn’t have been brutal right away—more like little things that escalated over time.
at first, it might’ve seemed like typical sibling roughhousing, but benjamin had no off switch. he didn’t just wrestle or shove—he went for pain. maybe it started with cheap shots, kicks under the table, or punches thrown when no one was looking. by the time johnny was in his early teens, benjamin had figured out exactly how to break him down—physically, verbally, & psychologically.
benjamin was favored or enabled by their parents, which would’ve made it worse. sid (especially sid) didn’t intervene, he laughed it off & blamed johnny for not fighting back harder. johnny internalized it as just another way he wasn’t good enough.
that age gap makes the abuse even more psychologically damaging because, at 10, johnny should have been physically stronger—but benjamin wasn’t just relying on strength. he was calculating, relentless, & cruel in a way that went beyond normal sibling rivalry.
a 7-year-old tormenting a 10-year-old also means that benjamin figured out early how to manipulate situations to his advantage. he was the kind of kid who knew how to weaponize adults against johnny or play innocent while making sure johnny took the blame. sid ignored it—& worse, reinforced it by treating johnny like the family disappointment—then johnny would’ve had nowhere to turn, reinforcing his need to be tough, independent, & emotionally closed off.
so by the time johnny was 12 years old, benjamin had already been tormenting him for years, & johnny had already decided that the only way to survive was to become the strongest, meanest, toughest version of himself. that’s how he, at 12, ended up in cobra kai. he went after strength because he spent his whole childhood being made to feel weak.
but then he, as an adult, watches how benjamin treats seth, & for the first time, he sees the cycle from the outside. he sees the way benjamin tears into seth, the way he hits him just because he can, & suddenly, it’s like looking in a mirror. the realization gnaws at him for a very long time. he almost says something to miguel, or robby, or even carmen, but the words die in his throat before he can get them out.
when he sees benjamin raises a hand to seth again in season 5, that’s when johnny snaps—because now, it’s not just about him anymore. it’s about making sure no one else has to grow up thinking they were weak just because someone stronger made them feel that way.

"no, dad, you can't kiss papa—you have to fight him! uncle seth told us that weird, smelly plant," harper points to the mistletoe hanging above the doorway, "is for f-fightin' everyone." she says matter-of-factly, continuing to color in the christmas tree on her page in the fancy coloring book grandpa bonsai got her for christmas. her grandpa is so cool! he taught their parents karate, & now henry & harper are learning from them!
henry looks up from his lego set & stares right into his dad's eyes, frowning slightly. "uncle hawk said it's like a rule or somethin'. you gotta fight somebody if you're under that plant." he points the lego piece at @taughtpain. "if you fight papa, dada, mommy, or mama, i'm not waxing the cars at our dojo for a whole week," he says firmly.
harper wrinkles her nose & places her glittery gel pen down on the coffee table, glaring at the mistletoe like it personally offended her. "ugh, it smells like... rotting plants, but worse!" she complains, waving her hand in front of her face & scowling. "why would any mortal wanna stand under that? much less fight under it."
henry nods vigorously in agreement with his sister's words. it causes his blond hair to fall in front of his face, which he blows out of his way. he needs a hair-tie, & stat. the boy crosses his arms, his face serious. "it's not just the smell—it feels... off," he mutters, giving the mistletoe a wary glance. "like it's daring us to fight under it. guess uncle seth was right. but please don't fight our parents. pinky promise us." he sticks out his pinkie towards his dad expectantly. "grandpa cobra'll get mad. he might ground you."

I don’t think you’re afraid of anybody. I think you’re cocky and disrespectful. But you combine that with your skills and strength, I think you can be one of the most terrifying fighters in the Sekai Taikai.
