The themes of motherhood have been one of the most underrated things about Deltarune's narrative, and the place where I feel these themes shine the most is in how Toriel and Carol have chosen to deal with the absence of their eldest children.
When I observe how Toriel treats and interacts with Susie, I see it as something more than just an expression of basic hospitality, but her maternal instincts getting the better of her, as if she's been given an opportunity to express the same motherly love she has for Asriel (I mean, she does dress her up in his clothes). Bonding with Susie when she was a little girl gave Toriel an emotional connection/attachment to her that she wouldn't otherwise have if she got to know her, say, right after Chapter 2, and because of that, she treats Susie less like an acquaintance and more like an actual member of the family. But even so, she's expressing this love in a way that's healthy, benign, and in no way harmful to Susie, Kris, or herself.
The same cannot be said for Carol. Yes, Carol's situation with Dess is different from Toriel's situation with Asriel. But the fact is that the only thing getting in the way of Carol from healthily processing her daughter's disappearance WAS HERSELF. You can see how she's treated Dess's room as she kept it perfectly preserved (or should I say FROZEN IN TIME) as it was when she was still around, indicating that she will not accept that her daughter is gone. And we see this toxicity demonstrated further in her relationship with Kris. Just like Toriel with Susie, she also treats Kris like a member of the family (which is understandable given their history together). But with Carol, her toxic and reactionary mindset was a carcinogen that mutated her relationship with Kris into something sinister, toxic, and above all, detrimental to herself AND TO KRIS.
Not only that, if you contrast her "kindness" towards Kris and her cruelty towards Noelle, it would seem as if Kris has become the golden child in her twisted family dynamic, while Noelle has become the scapegoat as she bears the brunt of her cruelty. And her "kindness" towards Kris isn't just a twisted expression of love. IT'S A WEAPON! A weapon that's wielded with the express purpose of keeping Kris in her grasp so they can fulfill whatever plans she has to fulfill her delusions.
