(regarding Lillandlas)
"He doesn't actually want to be a thalmor because he always befriends the people! He secretly cares about them and just wants to leave."
when in actuality....
he has zero remorse for all the innocents he has caused the death of, it doesn't matter if he acts nice to their face, it's all a ploy to get them to confess to theirs or other people's mistakes so he can get them killed and he can look good to the thalmor. he is fully indoctrinated and the only reason he'd like to leave is so he can have a calm, peaceful life with his partner.
he is slightly morally grey, but overall he is evil.
If your oc was a canon character what bad takes/gross mischaracterizations would the fandom come up with for them

oc asks that reveal more than you think
Do they sleep with a stuffed animal? If they have multiple, who’s the favorite?
Can they take care of a plant? What about a pet? What about a child?
Ask them to describe their love interest.
Do they look good in red?
Speech! Speech! Speech! Speech! Will they give one, and what about?
Who will they take advice from, no matter what it is? Who won’t they take advice from, no matter what it is?
Describe them in three words. Now let them describe themself in three words.
Do complex puzzles intrigue or frustrate them?
Do they empathize with non-sentient things (dolls, plants, books…)?
What age do they most want to be right now?
They’ve won the lottery. Spend, or save?
Do they like romance in the books they read (or in the book they’re in)?
Name one thing their parents taught them.
Would they agree with the term ‘guilty pleasure’? Do they have any?
What would they consider a waste of time– other than school or work?
If money wasn’t a limit, what would they wear?
Do they like children?
Kissing: tongue or no tongue?
Do they study before tests? Practice before job interviews?
What do they like that nobody else does?
What would it take for them to break up with someone? What would be the last straw?
Do they like being called pet names? Do they call other people pet names? What’s their go-to?
Stability or novelty?
Honesty or charity?
Safety or possibility?
Talent or effort?
Forgiveness or vengeance (or…)?
Would they date a fixer-upper?
What recurring dreams do they have?
What would they do if they knew it would be forgiven?

🛀🏿, 💁🏾‍♀️, 🥝 for Suiri and 💅🏽 for both Suiri and Valyom
wow, first question about Suiri! effervescent...
🛀🏿 Is bathing a luxury or a chore for them? Are they a long, sybaritic soak sort of bather, or a just-getting-clean sort?
it's more of a chore than anything if he's doing it by himself since he gets dirty pretty often with his main pastime, but if there are some nice men helping him out then it's very enjoyable and he's happy for it to last as long as possible.
💁🏾‍♀️ What is their hare care regimen like? Do they color, straighten, curl, or otherwise change their hair regularly?
Suiri takes great care to brush it twice a day and wash it very little to maintain its natural oils. he also uses egg masks on his hair from time to time to help with keeping it healthy. he can't see himself, but he sure as heck will ensure that anyone who can see him will see the prettiest twink possible.
🥝 How much body hair do they have? Do they prefer to remove it, groom it, or go au naturel?
Suiri grows a pretty regular amount of body hair, if not less than average. his chest and back are naturally free of hair while the rest of his body still grows it. he doesn't shave it, it's not common for folk in skyrim to shave regardless, need that fur to fight against the cold!
💅🏽 How do they keep their nails, long or short? Do they paint or decorate them? Do they bite their nails or pick at their cuticles?
Valyom allows his nails to grow wild until it starts genuinely affecting his ability to do things, at which point he cuts them. He doesn't decorate them, he believes nails' only purpose is to dig earwax out of someone's ear.
Suiri takes great care of his nails, they are always of moderate length, not so short you'd think he's bit them, not so long you'd think he doesn't tend to them at all. they are always clean, as he doesn't do any dirty jobs. they are never decorated or painted.

Personal Care Apprentice/OC Asks
Questions about your character’s personal care routines and preferences, brought to you by: last night’s insomnia and being startled by a bug in my bathroom
🛀🏿 Is bathing a luxury or a chore for them? Are they a long, sybaritic soak sort of bather, or a just-getting-clean sort?
💁🏾‍♀️ What is their hare care regimen like? Do they color, straighten, curl, or otherwise change their hair regularly?
💄 Do they wear cosmetics? If so, what is the one cosmetic they can’t do without?
🐲 If they have facial hair, do they style it, remove it, or just let nature take its course?
🌸 What do they smell like? Do they wear a signature scent?
🥝 How much body hair do they have? Do they prefer to remove it, groom it, or go au naturel?
💅🏽 How do they keep their nails, long or short? Do they paint or decorate them? Do they bite their nails or pick at their cuticles?
💧 Are they the person who is always moisturized and glowing, or are they ashy af indifferent to such things?
✨ Do they have freckles, moles, acne scars, rosacea, birthmarks, vitiligo, or any other skin pigmentation/texture differences? How do they feel about it?
👚 What kind of clothing do they typically choose to wear? Why? Do they have any sensory issues that affect their choices?
👠 Do they coordinate their outfit and accessories carefully, or just wear any old rag that passes the sniff test and their most comfortable shoes? Somewhere in between?

I commissioned someone for a plush of Valyom a while ago but never posted it, but here he is, he is lovely and really small (about 13cm)
I think the ref I gave was a little too stylised because he ended up with boobs but honestly I think it adds to it, I like my breasted hairy elf guy.
I specifically asked for his hair to be kept curly as it's an important detail of his and they DELIVERED, I love the way they did his hair!
His gold details are painted rather than embroidered, it looks perfectly fine in my opinion and I don't mind it.
the seller was DaNangCraft on etsy if anyone is interested, they were very lovely and made sure everything was exactly how I wanted it before shipping him! With shipping and taxes it came up to about €70, but they have different sizes with different prices, if you message them directly they also change the price (based on complexity I assume) which is how I got mine cheaper than the listed price.
they also make other plushies, not just oc ones, I can't vouch for their quality but I'd assume, based on my experience, that they'd be just as good! maybe even better, depending on what you get, I'm not familiar with their specialisations. personally I plan on finding out by buying a pet plush someday to immortalise my dear dog as she's getting old (she's 10 and getting little white eyebrows).
this is meant as a review as I'm extremely happy with the little guy and believe we should give exposure (on top of money, not as money) to sellers we like! support businesses and all, exposure does help pay the bills too and when i start my own plushmaking business I do hope someone will do the same for me! put out the energy you'd like to see in the world.
5 stars, would absolutely recommend, go get y'all plushies of your ocs.
bonus pics the seller sent that better display the quality as my picture taking skills are none vvv

this is what I was talking about btw, and no I didn't use references, that adds to the charm
I want to get featured on tumblr but specifically with something really odd like a practice drawing of taliesin's nostrils or a close up of oldolermar's bald head with a slice of cheese on it
if more people were exposed to it it'd be funny i think

For the ''weirdly specific but helpful character building questions'' thingy:
7, 25, 46 and 56 for Valyom!
Thanks for asking, man!
7. What would you (mun) yell in the middle of a crowd to find them? What would their best friend and/or romantic partner yell?
There is nothing anyone could yell to get his attention, if he was in a crown he'd be disassociating as hard as he can to get away from there. He is extremely uncomfortable with crowds no matter who they're made up of. The only way to get his attention would be to get physically in his space and talk to him up close.
25. What subject / topic do they know a lot about that’s completely useless to the direct plot?
He is obsessed with enchantments! It's properly addressed one (1) time in his story and then never again, it serves no purpose whatsoever, it's simply his hyperfixation and he loves it to death, even though the people around him find it a little odd since it's, well, dealing with souls.
46. Are they a listener or a talker? If they’re a listener, what makes them talk? If they’re a talker, what makes them listen?
He's much more of a listener, the only people that can get him to talk are his former tutor, his father's maid and his cousin. The reason he's more of a listener is because the people around him tend to not care about what he has to say, making him learn to not speak, but his special people are the exception.
56. If they’re scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear?
If he's scared he doesn't tend to ask anyone for help, he's very used to suppressing his emotions to the point he doesn't even realise he's doing it. He's extremely detached from his emotions and awful at handling them when they come up, to the point that even happiness will cause him to break down.

It frightens and discourages me how pervasive "tribal" stereotypes and imagery are in the fantasy and adventure genres.
It's all over the place in classic literature. Crack open a Jules Verne novel and you're likely to find caricatures of brown people and cultures, even when the characters are sympathetic to the plight of the colonized peoples - incidentally, this is the biggest reason I can't recommend 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to everyone, despite Captain Nemo being one of my favorite fictional characters of all time.
You can't escape it in modern cinema, either. You'll see white heroes venturing bravely into jungles and tombs to steal from natives who don't know how to use their resources "properly." You'll see them strung up in traps, riddled with sleeping darts, forced to flee and fight their way out. Hell, Pirates of the Caribbean, a remarkably inclusive franchise in many other ways, had an extended sequence of the white heroes escaping from a cannibal civilization in the second film.
And when fantasy RPGs want a humanoid enemy, the "bloodthirsty natives" are the first stock trope they jump to. World of Warcraft is one of the most egregious examples, with the trolls - blatant racist caricatures with faux-voodoo beliefs, cannibalistic diets, Jamaican accents, and a history of being killed in droves by (white) elves and humans - being raided and slaughtered in nearly every expansion.
It doesn't matter how vibrant and distinctive the real-world indigenous, Polynesian, Caribbean, and African cultures are. It doesn't matter how much potential these real civilizations offer for complex and sympathetic characterization. Anything that doesn't make sense to the white western mind is shoved under the same "savage" umbrella. They're different. They're strange. They're scary. They have to be escaped, subjugated, eliminated, ogled at from the safety of a museum.
Modern writers, directors, and developers don't even seem to realize how horrifying it is to present the indigenous inhabitants of a place as "obstacles" for non-native protagonists to overcome. "It's not racist," they say, "because these people aren't really people, you see." And if you dare to point out anything that hurts or offends you as a descendant of the bastardized culture, you're accused of being the real racist: "These aren't humans! They're monsters! Are you saying that these real societies are just like those disgusting monsters?"
No, they're not monsters. But you chose to design them as monsters, just as invaders have done for hundreds of years. Why would you do that? Why can you recognize any other caricature as evil and cruel, but not this?
This is how deep colonialism runs.
