Harold Edgerton pioneered flash technology in the 1930s to photograph objects moving faster than the eye can perceive. His work as both an engineer and photographer extended the legacy of nineteenth-century figures such as Eadweard Muybridge and Thomas Eakins. Edgerton’s photographs reveal the motion of the everyday world with unprecedented clarity. A revelatory selection of his multiple-exposure images of household products, sporting event and staged scenarios are on view as part of our newly opened exhibition, Flash: Photographs by Harold Edgerton from the Whitney’s Collection.
