In Carlisle's extremely long life, he has never met a human he has worked so well with. Yes, he typically gets along very well with humans, greatly respects and values them, but this is entirely different. Dr. Hannibal Lecter is smarter than anyone he has ever met-- or at the very least, in the top three. Which is still an enormous feat, considering Carlisle has been roaming this earth for more than three hundred years. Of course, this stays to himself. The only ones who know of his age and what he truly is are his children. None of them live with him now, but he still stays in constant contact with all of them, especially Edward. Edward has already heard a good amount about Hannibal, has joked with his father on whether or not Carlisle is going to turn him.
"You've misunderstood me, Dr. Lecter. Although I suppose that is my fault-- and I do apologize for it." Honey-golden eyes glance up at the other briefly, meeting his gaze with fondness. Underneath the mask, there is a light, warm smile. He returns his attention back to their finishing task, glancing at the clock first. A little shy of two hours, which is impressive considering the severity of their patient. But thankfully, the woman will pull through, which might not have been possible if she hadn't had the two best surgeons in the state tending to her. "Of course I'm not avoiding you. I just don't want you to bother yourself tending to just me. You are already such a busy man, the last thing I want is to add more to your plate." He steps away from the patient, allowing the nurses to step in to prepare to take her to PACU.
Tumblr media
The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor provided a soothing backdrop in the operating room, calming the tense atmosphere after a whirlwind surgery. The calm was even more pronounced with two of the hospital's most renowned surgeons, Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Dr. Carlisle Cullen, working side by side. Their surgical masks concealed expressions, but their eyes were focused and intent as they meticulously stitched up the latest casualty of a highway collision. Their hands moved with precision, bypassing the nurses as they seamlessly passed instruments to each other, forming an alliance that left little room for interference. They were a powerhouse on the floor and nary a nurse intervened with their silent structure of getting the patient under control.
"Are you ignoring my invitation again, Dr. Cullen?" Hannibal quipped, his gaze fixed on the neat line he had just sutured. He set the surgical tools aside, ready for sterilization, and continued, "I fully understand schedules and how busy we are. However… I'm starting to suspect you are avoiding my outreach." His tone was light, his words accompanied by a subtle curve of his lips, devoid of any malice. The nurses cleaning up the area have one thing on their mind: who on earth would avoid Dr. Lecter? The same thought applies to Dr. Cullen.

anyway i love love love vampirism having different strains, so vampires from different parts of the world/different times being different but still having a lot of similarities (weakness to sun, having to feed on blood being the huge ones). i don't subscribe to the canon of twilight vampires sparkling in the sun (the sun hurts them but it's not an instant impact like the Sinners vampires, it takes time for them to be burnt by it), but also... twilight vampires do not need permission to walk into someone's home. they're coming in whether you want them to or not.

❝ ahh, so you are taking pity on me, then? ❞ - gadiel
Tumblr media
"I don't think pity is the right word, friend." Sympathy, more like. Carlisle knows what it's like-- to be shoved into the life of a vampire so unexpectedly, with no one to help you transition from being human into being something not-human. It's not something taught in school or church, and for Carlisle, he was only taught how to identify vampires, and how to kill them. The knowledge didn't help him-- he was still bit, still stands here now, with skin too pale, eyes too bright. He keeps a safe distance, arms harmlessly placed behind his back. He means no harm and it's clear in his body language, in his warm expression. "I am simply offering a helping hand; companionship. You are, of course, welcome to deny."

i do think carlisle faced his father before his father's death. yes their relationship was strained and his father teetered on abusiveness towards carlisle, but that was still his dad and he still loved him. i think perhaps his father got sick and was on his death bed, not knowing what happened to his son that suddenly disappeared one day. carlisle found him by his smell, and immediately, his father knew what carlisle had become on account of him looking the same as he did twenty years ago, and also of course a vampire hunter will know what a vampire looks like. his father damned carlisle & proclaimed his son had died twenty years ago. of course it broke carlisle's heart. it left him with a bitter taste in his mouth regarding fatherhood... but it's something he was able to heal within himself, and i do think when carlisle felt so lonely and miserable, he was more so desiring and seeking children, not a romantic mate (but that too, he just wanted to be a dad more than he wanted to be a lover </3)

"I find the immortal life can be boring. Don't you agree?" Unprompted
Tumblr media
"No, not necessarily." Carlisle is incredibly curious about this woman. He knows she's a vampire because vampires can always recognize vampires, but she's not like him. A different strain, perhaps created in a different part of the world, in a different time. She looks different than him-- her eyes, the color in her skin. But they are both undeniably creatures of the night. "Once you find purpose, it stops being so monotonous. You still look quite young-- have you already become bored?"

"How have you been feeling?" Carlisle's approach is perhaps a little too sudden, unexpected. He promised to give Esme time, time to adjust to her new life, her new body. He knows how difficult it is, but that's why he can't help but hover, especially considering how rough her circumstances were, what led her to being here: no longer human, brought back from the brink of death against her will. Carlisle realizes how grim it is, thinks about the cruelty of his actions, no matter what his intentions were. He obviously meant well saving Esme, but really, who is he to play God in anyone's life like that? But he has done it before, and he knows he will do it again. "If you are hungry, I can bring you something." He doubts she is ready to go hunting just yet. @wastheheart

"Should you ever need guidance, Bella, you can always confide in me. What you say stays between us, I assure you." Carlisle smiles, sensing Bella's anxiety from a mile away. The poor girl tries to hide it, but it's impossible to hide much from a vampire, as she knows by now. It's just the two of them and Esme in the massive Cullen house, all the others having gone out for a hunt. Of course Edward had no problem leaving Bella alone with his parents, and the both of them are more than thrilled to have her here. After all, she is safest here, and Carlisle will protect her like she is his own-- because really, she has become like his own. A part of the family now, human or otherwise. He glances past her head towards the kitchen, catching sight of his wife. "She seems to be having fun cooking for you-- hopefully you like it." // @lovedlamb

The loneliness Carlisle has felt since turning into a vampire has been debilitating. Even following the vegetarian lifestyle has been easier than dealing with being completely and utterly alone. He is a social man, has always sought out company-- but it's not like he can be around humans and their groups, not when he is no longer human, not when the sun makes him look so different. He has no one to watch his back either if needed, which just makes him feel paranoid. The paranoia isn't enough to cloud his senses though, which is what has led him to the sharp stench of blood, so strong he smelled it from miles away, even with all the many potent smells in Paris.
Now he's outside of this theater, Théâtre des Vampires, wondering why it smells so intensely. If a human were to smell so much blood coming from a theater, they'd likely assume the actors are using pig's blood for dramatics. But Carlisle knows the difference. It is easy for him to slip through the dark alley and to the back entrance of the theater, his curiosity getting the best of him. He plans to peek inside, never hesitating to help any human in need. For a heart that no longer beats, it still feels immensely, much to his own dismay sometimes. @devourcr

Carlisle trusts Jasper has no negative or dangerous intentions, but he also knows he does not have full control over himself just yet. Acquiring control as a vampire takes effort and time, and he knows Jasper is putting in effort. Now they just have to work together, to not rush. Of course Carlisle would never brag about Jasper being lucky, nothing like that. But Carlisle himself is grateful he was able to find Jasper so early on in his vampirism. It's true he has not known the boy for long, but he already cares for him deeply. Already considers him family, his son. It is strange how paternal he has become since becoming a vampire-- it's something he never really felt during his human years, especially not with how cruel and harsh his own father was. Maybe it just taught him what not to do with his own family.
"You have exceptional skills with animals, Jasper. Usually they don't like us. They know what we are, unlike humans." His golden eyes glance around, briefly meeting the gaze of a working woman, with her massive dress and her fan. She is relentless with fanning herself, and the smell of her strong perfume and the touch of many men and her pulse swarms his nose, but it doesn't make any sort of impact on him. She smiles, looks between him and Jasper, and eagerly attempts to wave them over. Politely, Carlisle shakes his head, continuing his way out of the town with Jasper.
"Yes, there are plenty of longhorns. I also saw several posters about a reward being offered on a cougar. Do you want to try that? Maybe we can find something that won't give you the same reaction you've been having to the other animals." He knows consuming animal blood hasn't been easy for Jasper. Carlisle doesn't plan to give up on him. Surely, they'll find something that'll be easier on the younger vampire.
Sweat dirt dust leather blood- Hay alcohol oak blood- Straw wood blood red heartbeats pulsing Blood-
Velvet soft on his skin, sweet breath in his face. Jasper blinks. The cherry bay comes into focus, much closer than before. Her nose is suddenly right in front of him. Whiskers tickle his chin and she lips at him gently. Grooming him back, his hunger addled mind supplies slowly. For a moment everything fades away. Nothing exists but him and this sweetheart of a horse who smells like home before home pulled out a rifle. They shouldn't be here anyway. Small towns are so nosy, wary, eyes everywhere that loathe outsiders.
He leans forward and exhales at mare's muzzle, lip quirking up when she puffs back. A goodbye now instead of greeting. Jasper doesn't want to go. He could spend hours scratching the patch of fur on new friend's forehead where it swirls out in a sort of cowlick. "Okay," he whispers instead, not dragging his feet like a child, letting Carlisle guide him away. His throat burns and he dreads the nausea of whatever prey they'll hunt later. The idea of forcing down something several hundred pounds is sickening. "There's-" a drunk thirty feet from them who he knows no one would miss "-longhorns...always stragglers during this time of year on the cattle drives."

'' You haven't visited us for a while, old friend. '' / from Aro!
Tumblr media
For a being as cold as Carlisle, it is surprising how he can radiate such warmth. His heart no longer beats, but it always extends kindness. Even with their different ways of life and their views on what is right or wrong, Carlisle holds no ill will towards Aro. Ultimately, Carlisle knows Aro holds some sort of fondness towards him. Were that not the case, leaving the Volturi would not have been as easy as it had been back then-- or rather, he wouldn't have even been able to leave. But there is a mutual respect and trust there, no matter how much time has passed between them. Truthfully, he is glad to see his old friend again, especially because he assumes nothing wrong has been done by his family. Their life in Forks has been quiet and stealthy for these past few years. He doubts anything will disturb that peace anytime soon.
"It has been a long time, hasn't it? You must forgive me, Aro. We partake in vacations quite often, but we've been staying in the country lately. You'd be surprised at how much plane rides are disliked by my family." He smiles now, full and genuine, his posture relaxed and open. He eyes his old friend, as if expecting some sort of change, but beings like them do not age, do not change one bit. Well, his hair is styled a bit differently, but Carlisle knows his is, too. "I hope you're here on good terms. I wish you had let me know you were visiting Forks-- I could have prepared a dinner for you." Of the vegetarian kind, of course. That hasn't changed from Carlisle-- it never will.
