gaze flickers down to the bike helmet that must’ve caught her eye, half hidden in the corner of his staff locker where he’d tossed it that morning. the comment elicits the ghost of an eye roll, as well intentioned as it might be ❝ it’s always possible, yeah. ❞ perhaps a bit bleak but there’s no point in lying, right? he’s long since made peace with the idea that he could very easily become one of the countless people they see in a day. he's seen too many motorcycle collision cases come through their doors to not be displled of any illusions but if experiencing firsthand the aftermath still hasn't detered him from riding, it's unlikely anything else will.

despite the reputation they tend to have amongst healthcare professionals, jesse does have a motorcycle and has actively ridden, on and off, since he was eighteen years old. as an er nurse, he definitely understands the dangers associated with riding and has seen the carnage motorcycle wrecks leave behind firsthand— but he’s also seen what can happen just from slipping off a ladder or falling down the stairs. some of the worst cases he’s seen were from regular old household accidents. he’s seen triple As blow on new moms and he’s seen young kids ruin or end their lives just from swimming in the wrong lake or eating the wrong food. the point? life is short. and as far as jesse’s concerned, if he’s gonna go, he’s gonna go doing something that makes his life enjoyable in the meantime.

of course, he’s not an idiot. he accepts the risks of the road but proper gear and a healthy sense of situational awareness make riding a hell of a lot safer than most imagine. when he's driving around the city, he always wears a full face helmet and a riding jacket, at the very least; when he heads out of the city to hit actual dirt trails and lean a little heavier on the throttle, he'll go the whole nine yards with proper boots, elbow and knee pads, gloves, mouth guard, etc.

now on to his actual bikes!

his older bike is a 2018 ducati scrambler desert sled and he’s had it since it was factory new. it's been well loved and well ridden but with the model now discontinued, has become a little too expensive to maintain. it has since been “retired” for something newer and shinier but for bike going on seven years old ( with several times as many miles on it ), it’s still in pretty decent shape. these days, he keeps it around as more of a collectors item and conversation starter, though he will still take it out every now and again just to keep the engine warm.

his newer bike is an electric 2023 dual sport zero fx zf7.2. it's not quite as flashy as the ducati and the range it can travel before needing a charge is definitely limited but it's also quieter, offers a much smoother ride ( important since he's not that young anymore! ), and requires a lot less general maintenance— plus, it's leaner frame allows him to tightly zip though pittsburgh traffic with ease. this is the bike he uses for day to day tasks around the city and the one he can be found riding into work on.

this is what i got for jesse’s background so far

he’s the oldest of four boys. it feels as though his parents were on the verge of divorce throughout his entire childhood but they didn’t actually bite the bullet until their youngest had left for college. by then, jesse had already been out of the house for a number of years so it was more of a “fucking finally” situation than a “my life is forever changed” kind of feeling. still — he feels as if a lot of bullshit childhood angst could have been avoided if they’d just got their shit together sooner.

he was a teen in the 90s so him and his brothers were very much latchkey kids. went through his own era of teenage rebellion but his strong instincts ( and slight parentification ) to look after his brothers usually kept him from veering too far into “asshole delinquent” territory. started veering towards music as an escape, especially since he grew up with the early days of nirvana and pearl jam which really laid the groundwork for his music tastes going forward.

as a teen going into young adulthood, he really thought he was going to be a famous musician. his formed a garage band with his friends in high school but it wasn’t until their college years that they really began to find their footing ( as grunge rock became more popular thanks to the aforementioned bands ). going by the name plague dogs, over the next few years, they’d go from playing pop up gigs at bars to touring with other upcoming bands and opening for bigger names at ( local community organized ) festivals. for sound reference: heart attack man / hot mulligan.

he pivoted from a music career to medical school after losing two of his friends / bandmates to two separate overdoses in their mid 20s. and even before that, it wasn’t uncommon to hear about the passing of someone you once toured with, whether it be from something caught while sharing needles or bad luck from laced pills. it got tiring, the constant feeling of helplessness. jesse graduated from nursing school in his early 30s and has been working as a trauma nurse for well over a decade now.

he decided to stick with emergency medicine because, like most others who gravitate to the trauma team, he’s always been a bit of an adrenaline junkie and doing anything else would be boring.
